13 Must-Eat Foods to Try in America

We all enjoy indulging every once in a while and there’s few places that offer a more delicious (and gut-busting) selection of foods than the States. Next time you find yourself in the Land of the Free, save a few notches on your belt for these gluttonous snacks.

What could be better than a burger? The answer is a bunch of mini burgers…obviously. What better way to enjoy a smorgasbord of miniature burgers then in Kentucky at gastropub Holy Grale.

2. Cronut

Once upon a time a croissant and a doughnut loved each other very much… but seriously, this is possibly the most magnificent creation. In New York, a concrete jungle where dreams are made of, there’s nothing you can’t do at Dominique Ansel Bakery, the top cronut spot in the world.

3. S’mores

So realistically, this camping classic is a hit anywhere, anytime. But where better to enjoy this humble graham cracker, marshmallow and chocolate creation than under a starry sky while camping at Yosemite National Park. For those who love to cook, it’s the perfect snack for the great outdoors. For those who can’t cook, at least there’s not a huge margin for error!

4. Hotdog

There is something about the the thought of meat packed between a fluffy piece of bread that is incredibly delicious. A hotdog with all the trimmings from hotdog top dog, Pink’s in Los Angeles, is a rite of passage for every traveller.

5. Root Beer Float

For something so simple, this refreshing summer staple seems so much more than just vanilla ice cream and root beer. Crack open a bottle of root beer beachside in California, add a dollop of ice cream and let the good times roll.

Bear claws are dangerous. Dangerously delicious. This rugged danish-like pastry has been a sweet American classic since the 20’s. Often stuffed with a fruit or cream cheese filling,  it’s a perfect mid-morning snack while exploring the streets of Boston.

7. Macaroni and Cheese

Don’t be fooled by its Italian-esque name, mac and cheese has been and always will be a quintessential American comfort food. While this is usually a deep-south dish, let your mouth water at the thought of the 10 different mac and cheese types on offer at Homeroom in San Francisco.

8. Cheery Pie

With a multitude of hits comparing a love that is equal to an American’s love of cherry pie, it’s fair to say that this comfort creation is practically a national icon. Sweet, sour and buttery, we challenge you to try and find NOLA Pie Guy while in Louisiana and see why cherry pie is worth singing about.

9. Shortstack

One shortstack, coming right up! It wouldn’t quite be a quintessential U.S trip without a breakfast stop at one of the countless roadside diners you’ll find just off the side of the road. Nothing seems more perfect than pile of pancakes in Las Vegas after a big night out.

10. Hot Fudge Sundae

An enormous ice cream sundae complete with all the trimmings; Fudge, chocolate and candy, piled into an ornate, frosted glass. The only way to make this more American is to enjoy one of these at Molly Moon’s in Seattle.

11. Chili Cheese Fries

And we thought regular fries couldn’t be any more delicious…until they became covered in chili and cheese. Just imagine tucking into this delectable dish, smothered in chunks of mouth-watering beef and lightly garnished with a sprinkle of cheese, against the backdrop of the Detroit city-scape while nestled into Lafayette Coney Island.

12. Deep Dish Pizza

“When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore.” There’s a reason why those are the only lyrics that anyone remembers, most likely because everyone then becomes too hungry at the mention of “pizza pies,” especially ones from Pequod’s Pizza in Chicago.

13. Mac N’ Cheetos

They’re the fast-food item that has taken social media by storm. While the verdict is still out on this insane culinary creation that blends these two American favourites, our curiosity of this heavenly combination of Cheetos and mac n’ cheese is positively overwhelming. Stop in at any Burger King while on your American road trip and give them a go.
