What began as a saying describing the first month of marriage (the “sweetest moon” of a married couple’s lives) has become a chance for adventure, exploration, and fun that brings a couple already in love even closer together. While some couples are opting for short city breaks which allow for a brief respite before they head back to the daily grind, the full-length honeymoon of a week or longer is still very much alive and well. Some couples dream of spending their honeymoon taking romantic long walks down beautiful beaches, while others would prefer to chase adventure and discover new things. However, there’s no rule that says you have to choose one or the other!

About Central America
This region on the southern tip of North America is bordered by Mexico, Columbia, the Pacific Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea. While Spanish is the main language spoken in Central America, there are also several Mayan languages spoken, and some English may be spoken as well. Central America is home to seven countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala Panama, Honduras, and Nicaragua. 7% of the world’s biodiversity can be found in this region, which makes it incredible for wildlife lovers, shutterbugs, and adventurers alike!
The best honeymoon destinations in Central America
Belize
A relaxing beachside vacation, a trek to ancient wonders, or some quality time exploring some otherworldly beauty under the sea? In Belize, you don’t have to choose. Visit the Belize Barrier Reef, a massive natural wonder home to hundreds of species of fish – 90% of which, some scientists believe, have yet to be discovered – for a completely unforgettable experience, or visit Lamani, a preserved Mayan ruin. No matter what you choose to do while you’re in Belize, you’re sure to find great food, friendly locals, and some of the best beaches in the world.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is the quintessential Central American destination. From hot springs to lush rainforests to sprawling national parks you could spend a lifetime in, this popular honeymoon destination never disappoints. Hike up Arenal Volcano, an active volcano which offers travellers breaks in the form of various natural hot springs along the way, visit a sloth sanctuary, or take in San Jose’s bustling nightlife and colourful architecture. Panama
More than the world-famous canal, Panama is home to prime sailing gorgeous jungles, and fascinating historical sites. Panama City offers honeymooners world-class shopping, encounters with some of the many incredible species of wildlife native to the region, and some of the best beaches and water activities Central America has to offer. Throughout the rest of the country, you’ll find open-air museums, lush national parks, and vibrant botanical gardens. It’s the perfect place for your first adventure as a married couple.
Guatemala
Honeymooners who want to get the most out of their first trip as a married couple should put Guatemala very high on their list! Between wandering the streets of local markets, discovering ancient Mayan cities like Tikal, or just relaxing in the shadow of awe-inspiring natural beauty like Lago de Atitlan, travellers will find a new treasured memory around every corner. Nicaragua
For a secluded tropical honeymoon that makes you feel as if you and your partner are the only people left on earth, look no further than Nicaragua.
