G Adventures vs. Tucan Travel: Which Operator is Right For You?

Considering booking your dream tour but having trouble deciding between  G Adventures and Tucan Travel? We’ve got you covered! Read on to contrast and compare both operators, and get a better idea of which one is best suited to you.

Group size, age requirements and travel styles

Both G Adventures and Tucan Travel offer small group travel, and don’t have a hard age limit. Both operators are able to accommodate children and families on their tours (depending on the individual tour and destination). G Adventures also has age-specific tours for 18 to 39-year-olds, as well as family-specific tours. We have outlined this in more detail below.

G Adventures has divided their trips into different travel styles; Classic Tours, National Geographic (for more in-depth experiences), Active tours, Family (specifically for families travelling with kids), Rail (primary transport by train), Marine (primary transport by boat), Local Living (local cultural focus), and more.

G Adventures has small group tours, so you can expect a maximum group size of 15, but often the average is just 10. While they accommodate specifically for adventure travellers with their Active tours, and children with their Family tours, there is no upper age limit, although travellers with pre-existing medical conditions are required to complete a medical questionnaire.

Tucan Travel doesn’t distinguish separate travel styles beyond Worldwide Group Tours. Tucan Travel offers experiences that are designed for travellers who love to travel with a small group, and want to experience different forms of transport and get involved with the local culture. The group sizes are up to 19 people, and there is not a hard limit on ages for most tours, although most travellers fall between the 25 and 45 age range. If you are wanting to travel with children, Tucan Travel offers a tailormade department for family holidays.

Physical requirements

The physical requirements for both Tucan Travel and G Adventures require a reasonable amount of fitness; that is, you will be required to carry your own luggage, you will sometimes be taking public transport, and may need to carry your luggage to and from transport hubs or upstairs at your accommodation.

Both G Adventures and Tucan may have particular trips, itineraries or excursions which require a higher level of fitness and more physical requirements (such as trekking, swimming, etc). These will be clearly marked on the individual tour itineraries, so it is best to read the itinerary in detail.

Accommodation

With Tucan Travel, tours will generally stay in small, locally-owned hotels rather than large international chains. Sometimes accommodations can be far from towns and cities, staying in unique places such as jungle lodges, Chinese junk boats or remote home-stays. You can expect all accommodations to be clean and comfortable tourist-class hotels.

With G Adventures, the accommodation depends on the trip style you’ve chosen and can range from camping to hotels, to trains or even boats. You can share a room as a solo traveller at no extra cost or pay more to have your own room. You will be sharing a room with another traveller with G Adventures but some tours offer the opportunity to pay extra for your own room.

Transportation and guides

G Adventures tours will in most cases use public transportation, and use local guides. This is done so that travellers can experience the local transportation system and cultures.

Some G Adventures tours, including Superior, Comfort Class, and most adventures in Africa, will use private transportation. It is best to check the details of the tour to see which transportation style will be used, as it can vary from tour to tour, and different destinations. The guides used are usually locals from the area or region that you are travelling.

Tucan Travel has expert tour leaders from around the world to guide your journey sometimes accompanied by a local guide as well. Tucan Travel tours in Africa and Patagonia are operated in custom-built Tucan overlanding trucks. All other regions use a mixture of public and private transport.
