The world’s largest beer festival, Oktoberfest, has just begun. The beer keg has been tapped and millions of enthusiasts in Munich are enjoying a cold stein filled with German brewed perfection.
If you aren’t one of the lucky six million to attend the event this does not mean that you should miss out in any way. There’s plenty of other celebrations around the world too!
Grab some friends and head down to the closest fest near you; if not then a German restaurant will suffice. Here is a guide to the items you should be treating yourself to this Oktoberfest. Prost!
1. Ein Mass Bitte
Oktoberfest is not complete without a stein of Munich beer. Don’t bother with a half stein- go the whole way and order a 1 litre stein. Make sure you order one of the 5 Munich beers to keep tradition. Lowenbrau, Hofbrau, Augustiner, Paulaner and Hacker-Pshorr are the beers you need to be sipping.
2. Pork Knuckle
Order a whole roasted pork knuckle and accept the challenge this dish presents. Served with bread dumplings and sauerkraut, this dish is heavenly. The crackling sound will take you to a happy place and the succulent pork is a feast fit for a king or queen.
3. Pretzel
Bite into a pretzel the size of your face that’s been baked fresh and covered in rock salt. There’s really no better food to enjoy alongside a cold beer. Enjoy you this fried piece of doughy goodness served with butter or a cheese dip. Yum.
4. Half Chicken and Chips
Get yourself ready for a feast. This meal is the perfect amount (yes the perfect amount) for lunch or dinner. Roasted and served hot out the oven, the savoury and crispy flavours this will get your belly ready for some refreshing Munich beer.
5. Spaetzle
Cheesy and rich, this local egg noodle dish is smothered in a cheese sauce, baked in the oven and topped with crispy fried onions for a little bit of crunch. It is absolutely delicious and tops any kind of mac and cheese.
6. Schnitzel
Take a thin piece of juicy pork or chicken, cover it in breadcrumbs, fry it and serve it with chips. This is a wonderful specialty and rightly so; it is simply legendary and one of the best ways to enjoy pork or chicken.
7. Wurst Plate
Why stop at trying one of the delicious German sausages? Try all of them on a plate and enjoy a variety of the best types of German sausages. Often accompanied with mash and sauerkraut; how could you possibly go wrong?
8. Goulash Soup
Warm your soul with a hot bowl of goulash soup. Made from a beef and tomato broth with extra pieces of tender beef. Dip in a piece of fresh bread and feel the comfort.
9. Apple Strudel
No Oktoberfest diet would be complete without a dessert. An apple strudel is the perfect way to top off a day well spent at the fest. Hot stewed apple is encased within a crispy baked filo pastry. Serve with fresh cream, ice cream or drowned in a cold custard sauce- the choice is yours but it certainly is the best way to top off your festival experience…that and another beer of course.
If all of these Oktoberfest meals are making you think that you need to take a trip to Munich then do not fear because TourRadar has just the trip for you to see Oktoberfest in 2017. So you keep practicing at the fest near you and we will see you there next year. Prost!
