The most amazing, life changing experience ever! It was an eye opener. Beauty and grace and in tour face. It is worth while and I would never travel without Trafalgar! Feom the hidden treasures all the way to the typical tourist, every base was covered! Not to mention the brilliantly amazing travel director who just made the trip more special.
Travel Western Europe your way
A Western Europe river cruise beckons with timeless charm, meandering past ancient castles, rolling hills, and historic cities. Walk along Amsterdam's canals, visit Cologne's famous Gothic cathedral, or tour Strasbourg's half-timbered houses.
See all River Cruise toursThe Swiss Alps stand out as a top hiking destination among our European tour guests. Getting up to Glacier 3000 opens up some really good mountain paths between peaks - you've got those suspended bridge walks and trails that work for different fitness levels. Around Interlaken, the day hikes give you clear views of the Bernese Alps. Our groups really like walking through the Burgundy vineyards and taking those uphill paths in Florence that lead to the Piazzale Michelangelo lookouts.
See all Hiking & Trekking toursThe active parts of our tours mix things up nicely - you'll paddle through Venice's quiet canals in gondolas and climb to city viewpoints most tourists don't reach. Our travelers tell us they love how varied it all is, from walking ancient Roman sites to tackling those Swiss mountain passes. The coastal walks at Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland and along the Cliffs of Moher add some good physical challenge while you're learning about local culture. There's a nice balance between city walking tours and getting out into nature, especially in places like the Scottish Highlands and Alpine areas.
See all Active toursPedal through Western Europe's scenic routes. Wind past vineyards in France's Loire Valley, cycle up the challenging Swiss Alps and travel along Germany's Rhine River. Visit charming villages, explore medieval castles and sample local cuisine.

Looking at these top European tour companies, Trafalgar stands out for making travel logistics really smooth. Their tour directors know exactly how to navigate busy attractions, so you skip the queues and get more actual sightseeing done each day. Just keep in mind you might need to budget extra for some optional excursions that aren't included in the base price. Expat Explore delivers solid value with well-planned routes, and specific guides like Niall get mentioned again and again in customer feedback for going above and beyond. The only real variable seems to be the hotels - they can range from quite nice to pretty basic depending on the location. G Adventures' Rome to Lisbon route is getting great reviews, particularly for guides Lalo and Freddy who've found that sweet spot between structured touring and independent exploration. They're good at reading the group and adjusting the pace, which makes a big difference on longer trips through multiple countries. What I like about these companies is how they each handle the practical details differently - Trafalgar focuses on efficiency, Expat Explore prioritizes affordability and G Adventures emphasizes that balance of guidance and independence. Based on what our travelers tell us, these differences really shape the overall experience you get on the ground.

"The trip itself was relaxing. I liked that we had stayed in the same hotel at least two nights. Not much time in the bus or train moving from one city to the other. Marco was a great tour guide! He was very pleasant and patient with everybody. He had a lot of information to give us. Overall, I really enjoyed the tour!

"The New Year in Holland and the Romantic Rhine (port to port) was a lovely cruise. My husband and I were very happy with the staff, the cruise itself and the places we visited. It was relaxing and informative. The food was wonderful and varied and well presented. We did not have to do anything, the staff greeted us on arrival and took our bags to the cabin, and took our bags to the taxi on departure. We had a great time.

Our Rome to Lisbon coastal route works beautifully for solo travelers, mixing guided activities with plenty of free time to explore. People quickly make friends over tapas in Barcelona and group dinners in local Roman trattorias. The Paris through French wine country to Switzerland route is another favorite - with small groups, you'll bond naturally while tasting wines in Beaune's historic cellars or exploring Amsterdam's waterways. Our travelers often tell us how quickly they feel part of the group, whether they're wandering Paris's Latin Quarter at night or discovering Venice's quiet corners.
Couples tend to pick our deeper cultural experiences that mix romance with local authenticity. On the Complete Scandinavia route, you can watch the sun set over Stockholm's island views and share traditional fika coffee breaks in small Swedish towns. The British Isles tour lets couples walk together along the Cliffs of Moher and spend nights in cozy Highland hotels. Our travelers love having both structured activities and quiet time together, whether they're finding hidden spots in Rome's Trastevere or taking evening walks along Amsterdam's lit-up canals.
The Barcelona to Berlin route really clicks with young adults by mixing history, active experiences and good nightlife. You'll cycle through Amsterdam, kayak around Vrango Island and hang out in Europe's best beer halls. There's wine tasting in Beaune's old cellars before heading to Paris for Eiffel Tower climbs and Louvre visits. Our guides know their stuff - from Barcelona's best tapas spots to Brussels' craft beer scene and Berlin's underground music spots. People who've done these tours tell us they made real friends while still keeping their independence.
Our senior travelers prefer well-paced tours that balance comfort with cultural depth. Many choose Swiss routes using the excellent rail system, with plenty of time to explore places like Gruyères and Lucerne without rushing. The London through French wine regions to Italy route is another hit - we include dinners at local restaurants and museum visits with everything arranged. Travelers appreciate having centrally located hotels and shorter walking distances to main sites, while still getting rich experiences like Vienna's classical concerts or watching Venice's master glassmakers at work.
For families, our Madrid route hits all the right notes with hands-on activities kids actually enjoy. They get to make their own tapas in Barcelona and explore the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium - which our soccer fans can't get enough of. Swiss tours are another solid pick where families take cable cars up to Glacier 3000 and visit the Maison Cailler Chocolate Factory for some sweet sampling. Kids particularly love watching glass-blowers at work in Venice before hopping on gondolas through the canals. Our guides know exactly how to keep everyone interested, using stories and interactive moments to make Rome's ancient sites come alive for both parents and children.

Best time to visit Western Europe
- Spring 2025
Spring transforms Europe with wildflowers painting Provence and tulips carpeting Amsterdam's fields. Our routes make the most of this natural show - some begin in Barcelona where you'll explore Gaudi's Park Güell in mild weather, then head north as French vineyards wake up. Others start in London when gardens burst with color, moving through Loire Valley châteaux and crossing the Alps as winter snow retreats. We've got a particularly nice route combining the Netherlands during tulip season with Belgium's medieval cities and also Paris in spring bloom. Our travelers often mention how spring hits that sweet spot of nice weather and smaller crowds at major sites.

Summer opens up our widest range of Western European experiences. Several routes take advantage of endless Nordic days - starting in Copenhagen with evening food tours, then exploring Swedish lakeside towns and Norwegian fjords where darkness barely falls. Along the Mediterranean, routes link Barcelona, Provence and Italian coastal towns with plenty of time for sea swims and dining under the stars. Multi-country tours work really well in summer; you can mix morning hikes in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland with afternoon gondola rides in Venice and evening walks through Rome's piazzas. Our summer travelers particularly enjoy splitting their days between morning cultural visits, afternoon outdoor activities and also evening festivals.
