What people love about Austria Tours
- Austrian Lakes Walk
The hiking tour was very good with all hotel reservations and baggage transfers handled smoothly. There were a few times the detailed hiking instructions did not match that actual situation, ie, bus stops not where they were indicated on the detail and in one case, the detailed instructions were not for the correct hike. We were able to figure things out, though, and had a wonderful vacation. A big drawback, in my opinion, is with the insurance provider. My initial trip was for 3 people and one got injured in June and had to drop out. I issued a claim right away and, 2 months later, have still not heard one word from them! I realize you don't deal with the insurance end, but if this is who you are going to have as your sister company, I would probably not buy another trip from you.
- Cycle Prague to Vienna
Great cycling and epic leaders!
- Cycle Prague to Vienna
To quote Dickens's "Tale of Two Cities," this tour " was the best of times; it was the worst of times." Our leaders, Tomi and Andro were phenomenol -10/10. The cycling routes, the accommodations, the overall experience were all amazing. On the other hand, the experience with admin leading up to the tour was abysmal. Responses to my questions took days and weeks to arrive; info from both Tour Radar and Intrepid Travel -- when I got answers-- was often wrong or conflicting; several of us were sent to the wrong meet-up hotel, for instance. I was given different pricing for an add on, for another example. It took 3 messages to get one answer. Before the trip started I was frustrated and angry given the poor or absent prep help. Fortunately the tour itself was excellent. Tomi and Andro took every opportunity to ensure our safety and, happiness. I was very impressed with their level of service and attention to detail. They coordinated riding and van support very well, stayed positive and encouraging throughout, remembered each person's requests and accommodated individual needs perfectly. Truly, they were top notch in every way. I ended up loving the tour even more than I anticipated due to Tomi and Andro. I would love to do other trips with Tomi, but I would not deal with the companies again until they clean up their poor service

The Alps truly mix up different experiences, from relaxing train rides through Switzerland's mountain passes to active outdoor sports in Slovenia's valleys. Our customers love combining the GoldenPass and Glacier Express routes, where guides share local stories and point out interesting features as the landscapes roll by. The Soca Valley has turned into quite a hotspot for those wanting some real action - you can go rafting through rapids and canyoning down gorges, with nice comfortable hotels waiting at day's end. If you head to the Mediterranean side, you can blend coastal walks in the Italian Riviera with time exploring Nice, Monaco and also Barcelona. We've noticed many travelers wish they had more time around Lake Como and Venice when doing Swiss-Italian tours, but they do appreciate how the trips balance mountain views with cultural stops. Summer visitors generally find June through August best for hiking, while September's quieter trails and soft light make photographers happy. For winter sports, December through March sees the slopes at their best, and our travelers often mention how mountain villages feel extra special under a blanket of snow.
See all Alps toursDiscover the ideal tour package for you through Western Austria. On TourRadar you'll find trips starting from 3 days in length, and the longest tour is 12 days. The most popular month to go is July, which has the most tour departures.
See all Western Austria toursThe trek from Garmisch to Innsbruck stands out as Tyrol's premier self-guided hiking experience, and our travelers keep telling us why they love it. You get really solid trail notes and excellent organization that make independent hiking feel natural and doable. The route takes you through some seriously dramatic Austrian mountains, with clear markers and detailed briefing materials that help you stay on track without second-guessing your navigation. Recent customers mention how well the path balances challenging sections with truly earned mountain views - exactly what you want on a proper alpine trek. The sweet spot for hiking this route falls between June and September when the mountain huts are running full service and trails are snow-free. If you're looking to dodge the crowds though, September brings lighter traffic on the trails and also beautiful autumn landscapes.
See all Tyrol toursRiver cruising along the Danube opens up some of Europe's finest cultural moments, from walking through Habsburg palaces in Vienna to soaking in Budapest's thermal baths and exploring the winding medieval streets of Bratislava. Our customers routinely tell us how much they love life onboard - the river-view cabins are nicely sized and the regional dishes served in the dining rooms really capture local flavors. Something that makes a big difference is the quality of the guided tours, especially when local experts share stories that make each city's past come alive. We keep hearing from guests about how well they're looked after by the crew, particularly during special moments like attending classical concerts in Vienna's historic halls or visiting the beautiful churches along the river. The whole experience feels extra special in spring and fall when the weather's just right and you're not dealing with peak season crowds at the UNESCO sites and those lovely Wachau Valley wine regions.

The Danube Valley sections work beautifully by boat, and we've found the sweet spot is combining land tours with strategic river segments. The stretch between Spitz and Dürnstein is particularly good - you get views of hillside vineyards and medieval castles you'd completely miss from the road. Our travelers really like booking summer sailings when they can spend time up on the top deck watching the Austrian countryside roll by. It creates a nice rhythm when you mix walking tours through historic towns with these river segments.
See all River Cruise toursAustria's Alpine trails open up a world of varied hiking for all skill levels. The Dachstein High Altitude Circular Path takes you through distinct climate zones - you'll walk past angular reddish limestone and into cool glacier areas. Our customers love starting early here, watching the morning mist lift off the peaks as the sun comes up. If you prefer moderate walking with comfortable stays, the Salzburg's Peaks & Kitzbühel Alps route delivers nicely. The path winds through the raw beauty of Steinerne Meer and follows old pilgrimage routes, with plenty of genuine mountain huts serving local treats like Buchteln pastries. For those seeking real Alpine challenges, the Gschnitztal valley offers technical sections and cable-assisted climbing paths that put your skills to the test.
See all Hiking & Trekking toursIf you like cycling, Austria's river valleys and lakes offer some excellent routes. The Drau River path from Lienz is particularly good - you'll pedal through sunny valleys past old Roman trade routes and medieval castles. Another route our cyclists enjoy circles the Dachstein region, linking cultural spots like Bad Ischl with the natural areas around Lake Hallstatt. Daily distances run 13 to 19 kilometers on these tours, mostly on dedicated cycle paths and quiet country roads. Your luggage gets moved between hotels and you'll get detailed maps for the routes. There's usually time to stop at local wine taverns called 'Buschenschenken' where you can try proper farm food and also local wines.
See all Bicycle toursAustria's best tours start with 48 hours in Vienna where you can use included city passes to explore Schönbrunn Palace, Hofburg Imperial Palace and other city highlights. From there, the routes take you through Salzburg's old town and onto the village of Hallstatt - a place our customers keep telling us is the real highlight of their trip. Many tours include time at Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens where you'll find the "Crystal Cloud" with its 800,000 hand-mounted crystals. What works really well about these routes is how they mix guided parts with free time, so you get the background when you need it but plenty of time to explore Austrian towns on your own terms.

TourRadar travelers really like what Wise Yatra is doing with their Austria tours - they've got their "Austria in a Week" program running smoothly and their team stays on top of questions and changes. The guides seem to know exactly how to handle everything and they're quick to respond when needed. Eurohike has some great routes through Austria's mountain paths and valleys, and their hotel choices are quite good, but there's a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to communication. Some hikers mentioned they had trouble following trail markers and getting clear directions, particularly when traveling outside peak season. Worth noting that during quieter months, you might need to double-check your route details and maybe bring extra navigation tools just to be safe. The contrast between these two companies is interesting - Wise Yatra excels in keeping everything organized and making sure travelers feel supported, while Eurohike offers excellent outdoor access and comfortable stays but could improve their communication approach and trail guidance. If you're looking at these options, the timing of your trip might help make the choice - Wise Yatra maintains consistent service year-round, whereas Eurohike might require more self-reliance during off-peak times.

"Our tour was July 11 to 19, 2023, Prague to Vienna. I was incredibly disappointed with the two major components of our self guided tour, our accommodations, and my bike. I realized that my bike was in poor condition on the first day after our driver unloaded it and drove off--no bike fitting as stated, the rear reflector was a piece of red tape, and I was given a thin yellow strap to use. The helmet was well used and the back light didn't work. I could only navigate with 3 gears, my chain keep coming off, and the brakes were loud and I felt unsafe. Roadside assistance was slow and when I did hear back from our Ave contact hours later, hopeful he would be of assistance, he was still trying to find a bike mechanic for the following day, ugh, the following day! It was 32 degrees and we needed to be on the road early. I ended up tracking down a bike mechanic on my own, paid him in cash, and still had to chance gears and brake slowly and carefully. Our rooms were purported to be three star, however, they were substandard and one inn had us in the attic with no windows that could be opened and it was a heatwave. Our return transfer driver was organizing other work and was texting and driving for the 50 minute freeway trip, unsafe and unprofessional. Marianne

"Eric and Marco were good tour guides. Had some issues on the first day with the bus coming late for us to go into the city cutting our time short. The overall experience was very good, good hotels and made some excellent friends on the tour.

"Highly recommend this trip. The days can be long but the views are worth it. Most of the route is paved so you can probably get away with hiking shoes or trail running shoes. There is luggage transfer available but I didn't need it. The route from Unken to Waidring could be updated but I was able to find an alternate route with the map. Before you start you're given the full itinerary with a navigation system on the app as well as paper copies of everything.

Best places to start your Austria tour
Salzburg leads the way as our most popular jumping-off point, with 13 tour groups starting their Austrian journey in this musical city. Prague isn't far behind with 10 tour starts, while Vienna welcomes 7 groups to begin their exploration. Both Maishofen and Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut see 5 tour starts each, giving travelers a more intimate start in the Alpine region. Our data shows booking around 19 days ahead works well for most trips, though you'll want extra time during summer peaks and musical festivals. The public transport between cities works like clockwork according to our travelers, but those heading to smaller places often find having a car lets them discover hidden village gems and quiet Alpine spots. Photography fans in our groups particularly love the Salzkammergut lakes, often heading out early morning or late afternoon when the light makes everything look just right.

Austria's lake district works perfectly for solo travelers, with self-guided hiking tours that let you walk at whatever pace suits you while your bags move ahead to your next hotel. The Ten Lakes route really delivers - you'll pass old castle ruins and follow paths where Empress Sissi once walked, all with those Alps rising up around you. Our travelers tell us they love having both paper guides and the navigation app, especially when trails split off in different directions. Daily walks cover 14-22km with moderate climbs that most people handle well. Many guests mention how nice it is to adjust their route or take an extra day off when they feel like it.
