What people love about Peruvian Amazon Cruises

Our guides were well educated, informative, passionate about their pursuits, anxious to show us as much as possible. Our boat was not 5 star, however very comfortable especially with a extremely friendly &helpful crew.

- 6-Day Iquitos Jungle Tour at Maniti Eco-Lodge
In December 2020, I was lucky enough to be able to travel to Peru. It had always been on my wish list and they just opened to Americans with no quarantine; only a negative test. I had no idea what to expect with COVID, but I knew I would be either outside or in open air screened buildings so I jumped at the chance. I was the first tourist, they had had since March 2020. I arrived in Iquitos the afternoon before my tour, taking the exhilarating open tuktuk ride to my hotel. I tucked my money pouch inside my sun dress and felt very safe walking down to the water, where I had a pleasant evening people watching and drinking pisco sour. I took a tuktuk back, as it is never good for anyone, especially a woman , to walk alone at night in most places. I was picked up on time in the morning by my guide, Segundo. To get to the boat we walked through the busy market of vendors selling all kinds of fresh catches and other essentials. I felt like I was an explorer going on a real adventure. I was the only guest, as I was in most of what I did in Peru. It was so exciting to arrive at the lodge. The cabins are very basic, but it’s really all you need. A comfortable bed and running cold water and toilet. If you want to see the rainforest on a budget and can manage without hot water or AC, this is the trip for you. Think camping but with walls around you and a toilet of your own. The cool showers don't really matter when it is so hot. Carry a small towel to wipe your perspiration and have the most powerful bug spray you can and you will be fine. I would advise spraying your whole body before you put on clothes as the only bites I got were inside my shorts. The food was amazing. Everything was so fresh and tasty. I have never had fish so tender, simply seasoned and free of bones. I never realized how good pineapple could be when it is that fresh. Our boat driver and Jordi, the guide in training ,were very capable and Segundo, the guide, was so knowledgeable. He could call any bird and spot anything and explain the natural history of the plants and animals so well. Through his interactions with the locals I got a feel for life there and despite not having the advantages we have at home, they do not have all the negatives of urban life. My favorite times were in the boats on the Amazon, and especially on the smaller rivers leading into it. So much can be seen up close canoeing in the narrow waters. I loved the monkeys climbing on me on Monkey Island and the night paddle into the lagoon. I was not very good at Piranha fishing being outshined by an adorable young boy. Like, many tours in this price range, you will find yourself with afternoon down time and not much to do, which can be difficult if you are a person that wants to be on the go all the time. Bring a book to read, maybe some guide books to the plants and animals of the area. I mostly sat on my cabin porch and listened to the natural sounds in the quiet. And, it was so peaceful and quiet. Peru is a magical country with so much diversity. The Andes, the coast and the Amazon; short flights can enable you to see it all. Don’t miss the amazon rainforest.
Travel Peruvian Amazon your way
The Amazon opens up with some really engaging explorer tours that take you right into the heart of the rainforest. Our most requested 4-day journeys start with traditional river boat rides to reach secluded eco-lodges, where you'll join Yaguas people in their tribal dances and see the unique phenomenon of rivers that meet without mixing their waters. Local guides, who often grew up in these areas, take you to spots like the Chullachaqui Eco-Museum to learn about medicinal plants, introduce you to rescued monkeys on sanctuary islands and help you paddle through glassy waterways. Our travelers often tell us how these local guides make all the difference - they know hidden spots that most visitors never find.

The 7-day Amazon journeys give you time to really sink into jungle life. Along with everything from the shorter trips, you'll explore multiple locations including the Javari Valley. What makes these trips special is spending time with three distinct indigenous groups - the Marubo, Mitis and also Kohanã tribes - each sharing their way of life and survival techniques. Days start early with wildlife spotting and include several jungle hikes where you'll learn traditional hunting methods. Our guests love the mix of accommodation - splitting time between eco-lodges and traditional hammock camps gives you two different perspectives on Amazon living. The itinerary includes some nice extras too, like visiting the Santa Rita community across the Peruvian border and taking night trips to spot caimans in quiet backwaters.

June through August is perfect for mixing hiking with river exploration. Many of our travelers go for combined Inca Trail and Amazon tours that blend jungle experiences with mountain trails. In the Amazon part, you'll head out with guides to find rainbow macaws, capybaras and also giant otters. The night walks are particularly interesting - that's when you can spot caimans and anacondas. For those who prefer staying on the water, the Amatista expedition boat is a good choice. You'll explore Pacaya Samiria National Reserve with naturalists who really know the local wildlife, medicinal plants and also indigenous customs.

During the high-water season from December through February, we've got some excellent 3-4 day Amazon trips that our guests really enjoy. The Javari Valley expeditions are particularly good - you'll meet Marubo, Matis and Kohanã tribes and go out at night to spot caimans. If you're keen on wildlife, head to the Yanayacu River where you can see the tiny Pygmy Marmoset (world's smallest monkey) and swim near grey and pink river dolphins. The water levels this time of year also mean our riverboat trips can reach deeper into the Pacaya Samiria Reserve, where naturalists help spot sloths, monkeys and macaws from comfortable viewing areas.
