What people love about Dominican Republic Tours
- Dominican Republic – Heart & Soul of the Caribbean
Accommodations are quite rustic and a bit loud as you are staying right next to a neighborhood where people own dogs and chickens. The food prepared at the lodge was very authentic and great. The cooks were wonderful, very friendly and accommodating. Our tour guide was also great.
What our customers ask about Dominican Republic Tours & Trips
What kind of adventures can you have in the DR and where should you go?
The Dominican Republic's got some amazing adventures waiting for you. Up in Punta Cana you can zip through the forest canopy on some seriously impressive lines that'll take you 50 meters up into the trees. If you're into something more rugged head to Jarabacoa they call it the Dominican Alps and you can tear through the trails on ATVs its totally different from what you'd expect in the Caribbean. Love water sports? The Yaque del Norte's got some great class II-III rapids its actually the longest river in the Caribbean and you get about 12km of exciting runs. For something really special grab a kayak and weave through Los Haitises National Park's mangroves you'll get closer to wildlife than any motorboat could ever take you.
What local experiences can visitors join in on?
There's so many ways to dive into Dominican culture when you're here. The Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo comes alive on weekends with merengue classes where locals will teach you both old school and modern moves. Want to learn about food? Join a local family and they'll show you how to make sancocho its this amazing stew with seven different kinds of meat and local root vegetables. Over in Santiago you can watch master cigar rollers at work in La Aurora factory its been going since 1903 and really knows its stuff. Coffee lovers should head to Monte Alto in Jarabacoa where they're still using traditional methods passed down through generations.
Which natural areas can you visit and how do you get to them?
The DR's natural areas are just incredible once you get away from the cities. Los Haitises National Park is a must-see you'll need to catch a boat from Samaná but it's worth it with over 700 plant species limestone caves with ancient Taino art and even manatees. Down in the southwest Jaragua National Park's got the Caribbean's biggest flamingo colony plus these amazing rhinoceros iguanas you'll want a certified guide for this one. Want a real challenge? Pico Duarte stands at 3098 meters the highest in the Caribbean you can trek it over several days from Jarabacoa with local guides and mules. The Salto de Jimenoa waterfalls are easier to reach with marked trails leading to three different falls you can pick based on how adventurous you're feeling.
What's the best way to get around?
Getting around the DR is pretty straightforward. Guaguas these local minibuses run between major cities every hour from 6 in the morning till 6 at night though things get a bit looser in the countryside. Taxis run 24/7 in tourist areas with fixed prices depending on the zone. If you want to explore on your own all the major rental companies have offices at airports and resort areas and there's new highways connecting Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata and Punta Cana. Caribe Tours runs really comfortable express buses between the main spots with AC and proper facilities.
