What people love about Java Tours
- Jakarta to Ubud (including Mount Bromo)
the 2 last days of traveling before Tanah Lot should have been replaced by a faster way as the roads and traffic are very intense and only one day in Ubud is not enough. The hotel in Joshi is great but the food did not meet standards and I got sick. Generaly speaking it was a great experience. Andy was very helpful experienced and took good care of the crew; it was a pleasure.
- Indonesia: Hammocks & Hikes
The itinerary is excellent chosen for getting know the region and people of java and bali in this short period of time. It takes you to the well known tourist places, but also to some awesome unknown places especially in Java. The CEO Hesti is perfect for this tour, always happy and those feelings are carried over to all tour members. She is a local javanese who provides you with further information and helps you with additional personal requests.

The tour was very well organized. Our guide gave us a lot of knowledge and the driver did a great job. He chauffeured us safely across the country. Thank you very much for eventful days
Travel Java your way
Our explorer routes through Java really let you get under the skin of the place. The Jakarta to Ubud journey mixes things up nicely - you'll be up at dawn climbing Mount Bromo's crater, then wandering through local markets in Yogyakarta and later unwinding by the coast in Pemuteran. One spot our guides love showing people is the Green River Canyon; it's tricky to find without someone who knows the way. The train rides between towns show you parts of Java that most people miss completely. Yes, some journeys are long but our travelers tell us it's worth it for the genuine connections they make with locals along the way. You'll find the hotels are simple but do the job, and in Yogyakarta and Ubud you get proper modern comforts and reliable showers - exactly what you need after an early start up a volcano.

Top operators in Java
Looking at these three big tour companies, G Adventures comes out ahead with consistently good feedback about their Chief Experience Officers (CEOs) and how they run their tours. Their local connections really show - they work with neighborhood businesses and support Planeterra community projects along the way. Just keep in mind you'll be moving at a decent clip with some longer travel days built in. Intrepid Travel has solid tours that mix activities nicely, and they're good at organizing the logistics. The catch is that some of their guides could use more experience, and depending on which tour you pick, you might find the accommodations pretty basic. Our travelers have mentioned it's worth checking the specific itinerary details before booking. TourRadar is hitting some bumps with customer service lately. Their customers have run into issues where the tour demographics weren't what they expected - like ending up in groups with big age gaps or dealing with meal plans that didn't work for everyone. The lack of upfront information about who else is on the tour has been a real sticking point for many people. Between these options, G Adventures seems to deliver the most reliable experience, even with the quicker pace. They've figured out how to balance local authenticity and good organization, which isn't easy to pull off in group travel.

Another popular option includes special access to coffee estates near Kalibaru and private spots to watch the sunrise at Mount Bromo.
Top Java travel itineraries to fit your plans
Week-long Java tours really open up the island's variety. The most popular route starts in Yogyakarta, taking in the UNESCO sites before heading east to discover Solo's royal heritage at Istana Mangkunegara Palace. What makes these tours special is the pre-dawn trek to Mount Bromo's caldera - our travelers consistently rate this as their trip highlight. You'll also explore small temples like Kidal, with its intricate stone Garuda carvings and take rickshaw rides through local neighborhoods. The final days usually include stays in highland villages around Mount Bromo, where you can witness traditional life at 2000 meters above sea level.
TourRadar recommends visiting:
Yogyakarta, Borobudur, Wonosobo, Magelang
Our 10-day Java explorations start in Jakarta and work their way through the heart of the island. You'll begin at the Bogor Botanical Gardens before heading into tea plantation country around Puncak Pass. The itinerary includes time at both active volcanoes - Tangkuban Perahu and its dramatic crater views and the hot springs at Ciater where you can soak tired muscles. What our customers really value is the chance to stay in traditional villages like Naga, where ancient customs still rule daily life. These longer tours also give you time to properly explore the Dieng Plateau's Hindu temples and colored lakes before connecting to the cultural sites around Yogyakarta.
TourRadar recommends visiting:
Jakarta, Bandung, Wonosobo, Yogyakarta, Borobudur, Mount Bromo, Bogor, Denpasar
Two weeks in Java gives you time to really understand this fascinating island. Whether you start from Jakarta or Yogyakarta, you'll travel through a landscape of tea fields, ancient temples and volcanic areas. The schedule works well - active days hiking around Mt Bromo's crater or cycling through Yogyakarta's rice fields are balanced with quiet time at places like Pemuteran's beaches. Our travelers often mention how special it is to stay with local communities, especially near Mt Bromo where families welcome you into their homes and share traditional meals. These longer trips let you discover hidden spots like Seloliman Nature Reserve, where local experts show you traditional herbal medicine and organic farming methods. While there's quite a bit of driving between places, the journey usually ends in Ubud and our customers say it's worth it for the combination of cultural experiences and natural sites. It's particularly good if you want to see how Java changes from busy city markets to peaceful mountain villages and everything in between.

Demographics
Solo travelers tell us they quickly find their tribe on our Jakarta to Ubud routes. The long train rides through Java's countryside naturally bring people together, while cultural stops in places like Yogyakarta offer the right mix of group time and independent exploration. The homestays near Mount Bromo are a highlight - you'll share home-cooked meals with local families and learn about Tenggerese traditions firsthand. Walking tours through villages and organic farms create plenty of natural moments to chat with locals and connect with your fellow travelers.
For couples exploring Java, our longer tours blend cultural deep-dives with quiet moments together. The sunrise watch over Mount Bromo's caldera is particularly special, and the evenings spent stargazing in nature reserves create perfect moments for two. Many couples pick tours that end in Bali, adding extra days in Ubud or Pemuteran. You'll cook together in traditional classes, explore ancient water palaces and cycle through rice fields. There's a good balance of activities and downtime, with optional excursions that let you shape the experience to your style.
Young adults looking for real adventure go for our active Java tours that pack in plenty of challenges. You'll hike volcanoes, cycle through villages and find hidden waterfalls off the usual path. Our "Hammocks & Hikes" tours are a big hit - think pre-dawn treks up Mount Bromo followed by surf lessons at Red Island. The physical challenges mix well with cultural immersion; you'll stay in local villages and learn traditional crafts from masters. There's also time built in for optional activities like exploring Menjangan Island's coral reefs or joining yoga sessions in Ubud.
Senior travelers value our thoughtfully paced tours that don't rush between experiences. The Yogyakarta-based routes work particularly well, with guides who know how to adjust walking speeds and share deep historical context at the Sultan's Palace and Prambanan temples. Our travelers appreciate having both structured activities and free time to explore, especially enjoying pedicab rides through old town districts and visits to traditional silver workshops. We choose centrally located hotels and skip the more demanding activities while keeping the cultural experiences rich and engaging.
Java's family tours really shine when it comes to keeping different ages happy and engaged. Our multi-day routes through Java and Bali get great feedback from parents who appreciate how we mix temple visits with hands-on village activities. Kids love getting into the kitchen to make traditional cassava chips and trying their hand at gamelan music instruments. Starting in Yogyakarta works well for families - you can take your time exploring ancient temples like Borobudur, then hop on a horse cart to see village life. Our guides are skilled at reading the room and adjusting the pace, especially during those early temple visits and countryside bike rides when energy levels vary.

Best time to visit Java
- Spring 2025
Spring brings perfect conditions for exploring Java's highlights, with clear skies ideal for sunrise views over Mount Bromo's crater. Our most popular springtime tours begin in Jakarta, taking you through Bandung's tea plantations and art deco streets before reaching Yogyakarta's cultural treasures. Travelers particularly enjoy the morning cycling tours through rice fields around Yogya, watching local craftspeople make traditional goods like tempeh and batik textiles. The spring weather makes it comfortable for both temple visits and outdoor activities - you can explore Borobudur's detailed Buddhist carvings in the cool morning hours and still have energy for afternoon walks through traditional villages.

- Summer 2025
Let me tell you about our summer routes - they're really well balanced. You'll start your days early with Mount Bromo sunrise hikes and later visit coffee plantations where local families show you their traditional processing methods. The coastal part includes some excellent snorkeling at Menjangan Island and quiet beach time in Pemuteran. What's nice is how the days flow - active mornings blend into cultural afternoons, so you might climb a volcano then spend your evening learning gamelan music in a village. Our travelers love staying with families in places like Ngadas village; it's these genuine connections that make the trip special.

- Fall / Autumn 2025
Fall's mild weather is just right for exploring Java's volcanoes and temples. We've designed these autumn tours to mix famous sites with local secrets - sure, you'll see Borobudur and Prambanan, but you'll also discover places like Seloliman Nature Reserve where village healers share their knowledge of traditional medicine. You'll stay in family homes, join cooking sessions and learn to make real Indonesian dishes from scratch. Our customers love how the autumn light plays on temple stones during dawn visits and creates amazing photo opportunities around Mount Bromo's caldera.

- Winter 2025 / 2026
Java's winter tours work around the rainy season by focusing on rich cultural experiences. Our most popular routes take you through Yogyakarta's heritage sites and into Candirejo village, where locals teach you to make cassava chips and play traditional gamelan instruments. Up in the Dieng Plateau, you'll explore ancient Hindu temples and colored lakes, with visits to the Sultan's Palace and Taman Sari Water Castle rounding out the journey. The Mount Bromo circuits need good rain gear but reward you with spectacular pre-dawn jeep rides to catch the sunrise. Many travelers choose to head east, where you can see Ijen Crater's blue flames and the mighty Tumpak Sewu waterfall, even during winter weather.
