What people love about Red Centre Tours
- Larapinta End to End
What an incredible experience! Our guides Jordie and Ange were just brilliant; the food these guys came up with in the middle of nowhere was truly stunning. Before the trip, I always thought central Australia would be a fairly flat and boring area. How wrong was I! The views from the top of the dramatic razorbacks are as breathtaking as the chasms are deep. Best of all, it's all so remote you know that only the people who make the effort to do the WHOLE Larapinta trail end-to-end get to experience the very best of it. It's a truly special part of the world, and I really believe it's on a par with great treks like Everest Base Camp. Just do it - you won't regret it I promise!
- 3 Day Uluru Adventure
Loved every minute..the well organised itinerary, magnificent Australia! Fun sharing in working together and meeting some really lovely people..thanks Nat...tour guide extraordinaire
- Classic Larapinta Trek in Comfort
We had an amazing time! Our tour guides, Luke, Claire and Drew were kind, attentive, knowledgeable and genuinely nice people. The walks were wonderful, with some tough days followed by more leisurely days, with afternoon swims in billabongs. Sleeping under the stars was a highlight. I would recommend this trip to anyone who loves hiking and camping.
Travel Red Centre your way
The Larapinta End to End trek takes 14 days to really dig into this ancient landscape, and our travelers can't say enough good things about guides like Ange and Peter who make it special. They share local knowledge while cooking up great meals under starlit skies. If you want something shorter but still comfortable, the 6-day Classic Larapinta comes with permanent camps - you'll still get to challenge yourself on trails like Mount Sonder summit but sleep better at night. The landscape variety is what makes these routes remarkable: you're walking razorback ridges one moment, cooling off in waterholes the next and catching those soft desert sunrises over the MacDonnell Ranges. A 3-day camping option hits the main spots like Valley of the Winds and Kings Canyon rim trail, with guides who make learning fun along the way. Every route starts early to dodge the heat, and funny enough, our customers often say those pre-dawn walks turned out to be their favorite part.
See all Hiking & Trekking toursThe Red Centre's wilderness really opens up on multi-day explorer tours running 3-14 days; the longer ones give you proper time to trek remote areas and sleep under incredibly clear desert skies. You can walk through Simpsons Gap and Standley Chasm with expert guides, then tackle the challenging Mt Sonder climb - the views across MacDonnell Ranges are worth every step. Our travelers keep mentioning guides Luke and Claire who not only know their local plants inside out but also whip up amazing meals at remote campsites. If you want to see it all, the end-to-end Larapinta Trail tours cover every bit of those dramatic ridgelines, secret waterholes and also remote sections.

Top operators in Red Centre
Looking at these two operators, Autopia Tours comes out ahead based on what our travelers tell us. They consistently deliver solid experiences, especially on their popular 3-day Uluru camping tour. The guides like Damian really know their stuff, and travelers often mention how much they enjoy the meals and well-thought-out daily plans. Intrepid is a bit more mixed - while many people love guides like Robbie and Scott, and the tours are generally well organized, we've heard from some customers about communication hiccups and pricing that isn't always clear. The amenities can also vary more than you'd expect between different tours and departures. I'd particularly point you toward Autopia's Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and Kings Canyon camping trip - it's a crowd favorite and hits all the major sites in a nicely paced 3-day format. Our travelers consistently report back that it's well worth the money and time.

"Our guide, Ryan, was excellent. He was well organised and knowledgeable about the places he took us to see and very amiable too. We felt the tented accommodation needed some investment as our second tent had a leaking roof which meant our bedding got damp during the storm we had that night. It would also be helpful if they ran some power for proper lighting in the tents as many of the lanterns provided had no charge so we relied on our own torches or smart phone lights to see. The food provided was plentiful and of good quality and it is a shame that these easily fixable issues took the shine of what was otherwise a fantastic experience.

"AATKings was a great tour company to use to tour the Uluru area because they took care of every detail from start to finish. They are very well organized and have thought of every detail from the time you leave the airport after collecting your luggage to returning you back to the airport for your flight home. Tour guides were friendly, professional, encouraging and knowledgeable. The Red Centre Short Break Tour hit some of the biggest highlights and was a comprehensive tour of the area. My only advice to people booking in the future is give yourself an extra day or two here if time isn’t an issue. We never got a relaxing day at the resort pool or an evening to have a nice leisurely dinner because every day was packed with activities. If you’re planning a trip to Uluru, use AAT Kings to take all the planning off your hands - you’ll be glad you did.

Demographics
If you're traveling solo, you'll find our small group tours hit just the right note - they're social but still give you space to explore. The 4-day trips from Alice Springs are particularly popular; you'll join other independent travelers for sunrise walks around Uluru and winding hikes through Kata Tjuta's valleys. First Nations guides lead experiences at Simpsons Gap, showing you rock wallabies while sharing their cultural knowledge. The group dinners and stargazing sessions naturally bring everyone together, which our solo travelers say makes the whole experience even better.
Couples seeking romance in the outback have excellent options ranging from luxury train journeys to intimate camping experiences. Multi-day tours combine private moments - like watching color changes across Uluru at sunset with sparkling wine - and social activities with other couples. The longer 8-day journeys include special touches like dining under desert stars at exclusive venues and private cultural experiences with Aboriginal guides. Our traveling couples especially enjoy the mix of active adventures, like the Kings Canyon rim walk, balanced with relaxing evenings at premium desert accommodations.
Young adults flock to active tours mixing hiking challenges with cultural immersion. These typically run 3-4 days and include camping under impossibly starry skies or staying at outback resorts. The more adventurous options feature full-day hikes around Kings Canyon's rim, walks through Kata Tjuta's Walpa Gorge and also sunrise treks at Uluru. Our younger travelers particularly love the guides' storytelling around evening campfires and the chance to learn about Aboriginal culture through hands-on experiences like dot painting workshops.
Senior travelers appreciate our more comfortable paced tours that don't sacrifice any key experiences. These journeys typically include proper hotel stays while still offering all the essential walks and cultural visits. The itineraries build in time to truly absorb each location, from watching Uluru's sunrise colors develop to exploring the Cultural Centre at a relaxed pace. Our senior guests consistently praise tours that include air-conditioned transport between sites and also offer easier walking options at places like Kings Canyon, where both rim and creek bed walks are available.
Families exploring the Red Centre find great options built around their needs. The top-rated tours blend cultural learning with outdoor activities - think guided walks at Kings Canyon followed by campfire dinners under desert stars. Our travelers with kids particularly love the morning walks along Kings Creek, where guides make spotting wildlife fun while sharing Aboriginal stories about the land. Several 4-day circuits include permanent tent camping with proper stretcher beds, which parents tell us works perfectly for families. The guides earn constant praise for adjusting activities to different age levels and energy levels, especially during those early morning Uluru sunrise walks and cultural center visits.

Best time to visit Red Centre
- Spring 2025
Spring tours catch the desert wildflowers at their best, with temperatures that suit those longer walks perfectly. The three-day camping trips are a hit with our travelers, who particularly mention guides like Damian and Fred who tell Aboriginal creation stories while cooking real outback meals. You'll walk through Kings Canyon's Garden of Eden, visit Uluru's sacred spots and also explore Kata Tjuta's Valley of the Winds. The desert camping gets great feedback - though most suggest picking permanent tents over swags for better sleep. Mornings are fresh for walking, and the drives between sites often include wild camel and brumby sightings.
