What our customers ask about Kathmandu Tours & Trips
What is the best time of year to visit Kathmandu?
Kathmandu welcomes visitors best during two distinct seasons: March to May and September to November. These periods bring dry conditions and clear skies perfect for mountain views from spots like Nagarkot at 2,175 meters. The spring sees flowers dotting the lower valleys while autumn offers crisp mountain air. Winter months (December-February) can be cold and summer brings heavy monsoon rains that can disrupt travel plans. As one TourRadar traveler noted "The spring season offered perfect weather for sightseeing with flowers in bloom in the lower elevations."
What are the must-visit cultural sites in Kathmandu?
The city's UNESCO World Heritage sites form the backbone of any cultural visit. Start at Pashupatinath Temple then head to Boudhanath Stupa where locals circle the giant mandala. Kathmandu Durbar Square presents centuries of history through its wooden architecture while Swayambhunath Stupa offers city views worth the climb. Save time for Patan Durbar Square's Newari craftsmanship. As one TourRadar traveler noted "The vibrant culture and tradition of Kathmandu and the intricate arts and crafts are highly praised."
What type of accommodation options are available in Kathmandu?
The city caters to all budgets with options spanning local guesthouses to international chains. Many cultural tours book guests into 3-star properties like Samsara Resort or Hotel Thamel Park in the tourist district of Thamel. For luxury seekers the Hyatt Regency near Boudhanath Stupa provides 5-star comfort. According to a TourRadar traveler review: "The accommodations were very comfortable and clean with all necessary amenities and thoughtfully decorated rooms providing a much-needed rest after long days of sightseeing."
What day trips are possible from Kathmandu?
The Kathmandu Valley offers rich opportunities for day trips. Head to Nagarkot 32 kilometers away for mountain panoramas visit the medieval town of Bhaktapur just 13 kilometers from the city or trek in Shivapuri National Park. Patan's artisan workshops provide insight into Nepal's craft traditions. A TourRadar traveler mentioned: "The day trip to Nagarkot offered incredible sunrise views of the Himalayas and the stop at Bhaktapur Durbar Square was a cultural highlight."
What local dishes should I try in Kathmandu?
Nepali cuisine shines through dishes like momos (meat or vegetable dumplings) dal bhat (lentils with rice) and thukpa (Tibetan noodle soup). The historic Thamel district serves authentic Newari specialties. Cultural tours often include meals at local institutions like Thakali Kitchen or restaurants near the Garden of Dreams. As one TourRadar traveler mentioned: "The food served was absolutely delicious prepared with fresh ingredients and cooked to perfection by skilled chefs offering a perfect balance of flavors and spices."
How many days should I spend in Kathmandu?
Plan for 3-4 days to see Kathmandu's essential sites at a comfortable pace. This timeline allows visits to major temples like Swayambhunath Pashupatinath and Boudhanath plus time to explore Thamel's markets. Most tours base visitors at central locations like Hotel Thamel Park for easy access to attractions. According to a TourRadar traveler review: "Four days gave us enough time to see the main attractions while also having time to wander the streets and soak in the atmosphere."
