What people love about touring Northern Spain solo
- Green Spain From Barcelona
It was a good tour. There were many Spanish speaking tourists there but they accommodated well for the only 2 English speaking tourists, us. Alonso, our guide, was very easy to understand and very helpful. You do spend a lot of time traveling the 1st day, but the last 3 days gives you more time in the cities. This is more of a tour to go into a town for max 2.5 hours or less and take pictures/eat/etc. This is how most tours are though, and we are ok with that. It allows us to see more of the country. The dinners are a great addition to the tours. They give you full meals and allows you to get to know some of the other tourists. Overall, good experience for what we paid!
- North of Spain & Portugal from Barcelona
Great trip! I enjoyed it. It would have been great if we had stayed a few hours more in Vigo and Salamanca. Other than that, it met my expectations.
- Northern Spain (Classic, End Barcelona, 11 Days)
Northern Spain was a great experience. Beautiful countryside. Diverse people. Interesting and wonderful food experience. We totally appreciated how different the North Spain is from the south.
What our customers ask about Northern Spain Tours for Solo Travelers
What is the best time of year for solo travel in Northern Spain?
The peak season runs from May through September, drawing the largest crowds. The blazing summer heat can reach 40°C/104°F, making spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) more pleasant for walking tours and outdoor activities. These shoulder seasons offer milder temperatures and fewer tourists at popular sites.
What type of accommodation can solo travelers expect?
Hotels range from 3-4 stars and sit in prime city locations. The Barceló Costa Vasca in San Sebastian and Meliá Madrid Princesa in Madrid serve as typical examples. European hotels commonly offer single rooms with one twin bed - a setup that differs from American-style doubles.
What cultural experiences are unique to Northern Spain for solo travelers?
The region's rich heritage comes alive through local experiences. Travelers can join wine tastings in La Rioja's centuries-old cellars, walk between traditional pintxos bars in San Sebastian, and learn about anchovy preservation in Getaria's family-run canneries. The medieval streets of Santillana del Mar and modern halls of Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum show Spain's blend of old and new.
What are the must-visit destinations for solo travelers in Northern Spain?
The northern route strings together cultural powerhouses: Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum stands as a modern icon, while San Sebastian draws food lovers to its pintxos bars and La Concha Beach. Santiago de Compostela's cathedral marks the end of ancient pilgrimage routes, and Oviedo preserves its UNESCO sites with pride. Hotels like the Palacio de Aiete in San Sebastian put guests steps from these attractions.
How social are Northern Spain tours for solo travelers?
The tours naturally build connections between travelers. Shared meals at local restaurants, especially along the Camino de Santiago, bring people together. Past travelers often mention the friendships formed over tapas plates and walking tours that last well beyond the trip.
How easy is it to get around Northern Spain as a solo traveler?
Modern trains and coaches connect the major cities. The high-speed AVE train links Barcelona to Zaragoza in comfort, while tour buses handle shorter routes. Local guides help navigate the smaller towns and busy city centers, making transitions between stops smooth.
