Our explorer tours take you deep into authentic Amazon territory with naturalist guides who really know their stuff. The longer programs run 4-5 days and push well past the usual tourist spots into primary forest. You'll pick up proper jungle skills - from spearfishing techniques to finding edible plants and spotting wildlife. The guides show you how to track caiman after dark, catch piranha from traditional dugout canoes and find plants that indigenous people use as medicine. TourRadar customers tell us the overnight camping is a highlight - drifting off in hammocks while the nighttime forest comes alive around them. You'll also spend time with local caboclo families, try making manioc flour and see what daily life is really like along the river.

Small Group
10 tours in AmazonasOur Amazon programs from Manaus range from 3 to 5 days, letting travelers shape their own experience. Guide Eduardo has become a favorite with TourRadar customers for his skill at personalizing each day's activities. The 5-day option gives you private boat access to quiet waterways, where you'll learn traditional fishing techniques and jungle navigation one-on-one. Our 3-day tours combine night excursions and wildlife watching with genuine visits to caboclo settlements, while the 4-day explorer takes you deeper into primary forest to master authentic jungle skills - from spearfishing to plant medicine identification and animal tracking. We mix camping with comfortable lodge stays so you can spend extra time at spots that catch your interest, whether that's bird photography or connecting with indigenous families. The intimate group size lets everyone move quietly through the forest during night safaris and caiman spotting, which TourRadar customers note leads to more frequent wildlife sightings.
Private / Personalized
11 tours in AmazonasOur private 5-day Manaus programs let you really dig into what interests you most. TourRadar customers consistently mention guide Eduardo for his ability to shape each day around individual interests. You'll have your own boat to explore quiet channels, learn traditional fishing one-on-one and get personalized jungle survival training. The mix of lodge stays and camping works well - you can linger longer at spots that catch your interest, whether that's getting the perfect wildlife photo, watching specific bird species or spending extra time with indigenous families. Night safaris work especially well in this format since you can move quietly and wait for just the right moment to spot animals.

Best time to visit Amazonas
- Spring 2025
Spring opens up fantastic pathways into the deeper Amazon rainforest near Manaus, with our tour options letting you pick between authentic expeditions and cultural immersion. Our travelers praise guides like Eduardo, who lead groups through hidden jungle paths and waterways while teaching local survival techniques and spearfishing in remote areas. The focused 4-5 day journeys mix each day thoughtfully - mornings are spent tracking wildlife and fishing for piranha, while afternoons involve learning about medicinal plants from native guides and visiting caboclo families, who showcase traditional manioc flour production. The overnight camping becomes particularly special in spring, as TourRadar customers often mention how sleeping in hammocks under the canopy connects them to the jungle's nocturnal rhythms. What distinguishes these spring tours is their perfect blend of wilderness skills and also cultural connections - you'll paddle dugout canoes through flooded forests, practice traditional spearfishing and gain genuine insights from indigenous communities about their daily Amazon life.

The 4-5 day programs mix things up nicely - you'll start your mornings piranha fishing and spotting dolphins, then head into the jungle where guides share their knowledge about medicinal plants and survival skills. TourRadar customers often tell us the overnight camping is a highlight; you'll learn spearfishing techniques and track wildlife in the dark. - Fall / Autumn 2025
Fall gives us perfect conditions for expedition-style tours that blend lodge comfort with real jungle experiences. The 5-day programs start with dawn bird watching before heading out on ecological walks where you'll find various monkey species, sloths and other wildlife. Our travelers appreciate how we balance the activities - morning canoe rides through flooded forests, afternoon visits with indigenous communities and also nighttime caiman spotting. The hands-on spearfishing lessons and survival training make these autumn trips special, while the lodge stays give you a comfortable base between outings. Based on the reviews, Intrepid comes out looking pretty solid - their guides Patricia, Smithie and Edwind got specific mentions for going the extra mile and travelers really liked how well-organized their tours were. TourRadar's feedback is a bit mixed. One family had a great time on their Puerto Maldonado trip - everything matched the description perfectly, from the places they stayed to the activities they did. But there's also a story of someone getting frustrated with slow responses and ending up booking directly with Amazon Amazing Tours instead. That said, it worked out well since they loved the alternative tour, especially praising Leo who owns it and their guide Anailson. Amazon Tours got good marks for their actual tours, though it's worth noting their accommodations are pretty basic and you won't find air conditioning there. If you're expecting luxury, that might not be your best pick. Looking at these companies side by side, Intrepid seems to be the most consistent with positive feedback, TourRadar is hit-or-miss with their communication but delivers good experiences, and Amazon Tours offers good value if you're okay with simpler lodging.

- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter in the Amazon brings excellent wildlife viewing around Puerto Maldonado and Madre de Dios. You'll spend 3-4 days exploring Tambopata National Reserve where giant river otters swim freely, blue and yellow macaws soar overhead and red howler monkeys swing through the canopy. Our customers really love the elevated walkways - seven hanging bridges take you 91 feet up where you'll get close to white-throated toucans, woodpeckers and also three-toed sloths. The night walks are particularly good this season; expert guides help you spot nocturnal animals while explaining their behaviors and habits.

What's the best way to experience the Amazon in Brazil?
You've got three fantastic ways to explore the Amazon depending on what kind of adventure you're after. If you're looking for comfort there are luxury river cruises like the Iberostar Heritage Grand Amazon where you'll get expert naturalists and air-conditioned cabins to retreat to. For a more immersive experience jungle lodges like Tapiri Floating Lodge let you get up close with wildlife and local communities. If you're really adventurous you can go for expedition-style camping. The river cruises typically follow the Rio Negro and you'll get to see this amazing natural phenomenon where the dark Negro and muddy Solimões rivers flow side by side for about 6km before mixing - it's pretty incredible. Near the Anavilhanas Archipelago (world's largest riverine archipelago by the way) the jungle lodges offer some really cool activities like spotting caimans at night fishing for piranhas in traditional dugout canoes and walking through the canopy 30m up. For the real adventurers guided survival expeditions teach you traditional hunting and how to identify medicinal plants while camping in protected reserves.
Can I only start Amazon tours from Manaus?
While Manaus is the main gateway with direct flights from Miami and Panama City you've actually got some great alternatives. Santarém is perfect if you want to check out the Tapajós National Forest and Belém gives you amazing access to the river delta. Puerto Maldonado's another option especially if you want to see the macaw clay licks and elevated walkways in Tambopata National Reserve. What's really interesting is how each starting point gives you different ecosystems - from Manaus you'll explore black-water environments while Santarém lets you experience both black and clear-water systems.
What kind of authentic cultural experiences can I have during my Amazon tour?
You'll get to really connect with ribeirinhos (river people) and indigenous communities especially along the Rio Negro and Mamori Lake areas. It's pretty fascinating - you can learn how they make manioc flour which sounds simple but actually involves this whole complex process take part in welcome ceremonies with local shamans and try out traditional fishing methods. At Tapiri Lodge you can join local families and learn about their rubber tapping heritage which is super interesting. Around the Anavilhanas Archipelago communities show you traditional crafts using materials like piaçava palm fiber and share these amazing navigation techniques that have been passed down for centuries.
How different are the wet and dry seasons and when should I visit?
The seasons really change your whole Amazon experience. During wet season (December to May) water levels rise up to 15 meters creating these amazing flooded forests called igapós - perfect for canoe adventures and spotting wildlife since animals gather in smaller areas. You'll see more pink river dolphins during this time too. Dry season (June to November) brings out these beautiful white-sand beaches along the Rio Negro great for camping and hiking. The water drops significantly so you can actually walk through várzea forests and spot ground animals like armadillos and tapirs. Fishing's best during dry season especially for peacock bass and piranhas. Both seasons give you unique photo ops and different birds to spot so it really depends what you're after.
What unique wildlife might I see beyond the usual Amazon species?
Beyond the animals everyone knows about you'll likely encounter giant river otters in oxbow lakes harpy eagles if you're in pristine forest areas and these massive Arapaima fish that can grow up to 3 meters - they're incredible. The Várzea forests have some really special species like wire-tailed manakins and these prehistoric-looking hoatzin birds. Night tours reveal all sorts of creatures you wouldn't normally see like kinkajous and giant fishing spiders. Many lodges including Tapiri run reforestation projects where you can watch various monkey species being rehabilitated. You've also got these unique black-water beaches along the Rio Negro and amazing plants like the Giant Water Lily that's strong enough to hold up to 40kg - pretty impressive stuff.
