What people love about Azores Archipelago Tours
- Best of Porto & Azores in 9 days
Second time in Portugal and we decided to go on this trip as we´ve been in Algarve and Lisbon before. While Porto and Ponta Delgada were busy we felt lucky to repeat Portugal as we would be missing out tremendously. Hotels again really well located, clean and comfortable. We loved Douro, the guide was so knowledgeable and concerned on how we were feeling. Getting into and out of the flights was fast so not much time lost on airport time. Sao Miguel island was a highlight of our last decade travel for sure and I recommend everyone to take the trip.
- São Miguel Active Experience
This was an amazing tour! So well organized from start to finish. We were extremely happy with our accommodation and every single one of our daily tours and each tour guide. Nice small groups of max 6-8 people for each tour. I cannot recommend this tour enough.
- Walking in the Azores
Overall good itinerary and opportunity to see quite a lot from Azores. I would however prefer if more hikes were included in base package. Otherwise it was a bit of a mess and not so clear alternatives (and information materials on them seem to be a bit outdated). In any case, e.g. in Horta there is not much to see on our own, so would be nice to include a couple of hikes and highlights already in base package. Other than that very thoughtful logistics with 5 islands in 2 weeks. The first hotel in Ponta Delgada is a bit basic - no pool, basic breakfast, but the others were good. I think reservations for group dinners are good every now and then, but it should be as an option and better to be asked first whether people actually want them instead of presenting it a a big favour and literally making feel ashame if you don't go or cancel too late. You don't want to be pressured in time and sometimes it is more interesting to explore smaller places on your own rather attending a group dinner with preset menu lasting for 2-3 hours. Maybe it was miscommunication from the guide though. Overall Tania was very caring and tried to do her best, her organizational skills are very good. However, communication should be more clear, it was not transparent where exactly we go, what are the alternatives and how much do they cost (a table with all the options, required time and approximate cost can be even prepared in advance and included in information materials - we had 3 sets of materials, sometimes contradicting to each other). Also we would like more clear and timely information on what to expect of the hikes (hard or medium are very subjective words, one would like to know what is the soil, what are the views etc). Tania was eager to listen and adjust, but it was still hard to follow, especially when asking a question, she was not really answering it but telling something else.
Travel Azores Archipelago your way
Our most popular explorer routes take you through five different Azorean islands - São Miguel, Pico, São Jorge, Terceira and also Faial. You'll walk around Sete Cidades to see its twin lakes up close, trek through São Jorge's dramatic cliffs and valleys, and spend time discovering what makes Angra do Heroismo so special. What our travelers really love is how these tours mix coastal walks to old whaling villages with relaxing stops at thermal springs and bubbling mud pools. The balance of guided walks and free time works really well; it gives you space to get familiar with each island's unique character. For those wanting more activity, we've got options that include whale watching, challenging ridge hikes and also fascinating trips into lava caves underground.

"Great communication throughout the booking process. Just before going they send a really useful link to a detailed step by step itinerary. Hotel was good and all transport and tours were great. Going home with amazing pictures of San Miguel so all in all a great trip.

"Could have been (should have) a day or two longer. I think there is enough to see in Ponta Delgada to justify a day there. Also, I would like to see the tour end where it starts. In Ponta Delgada.

"The individual activities were quite good however considering I signed up for an active trip there was very little activity, mostly sight seeing and the activities were very placid which was disappointing. They never begin on time either you just wait around for 40 mins until they decide to start. Secondly, this is not a tour - they just book you into day trips and book your accommodation..no guide or group. Thirdly, the communication from this company is awful. You will need to do a lot of independent research to even know what gear you need each day or what you are doing. My transfer from the airport did not arrive despite the company having my flight details and have got radio silence regarding a refund for this. I also apparently had a lunch included but didn't get told this or where or what time but they had the audacity to ring and say where are you. Guests need to be mind readers to get their meals apparnetly. All in all this island is magnificent but you can book all of this independently without paying their fees.

Our week-long island hopping routes in the Azores are really well balanced, with Sao Miguel, Horta and Pico being the travelers' favorite combination. Starting in Ponta Delgada, you'll walk through fragrant pineapple plantations and visit Europe's oldest working tea factory. The food is a highlight in Furnas where they cook the traditional Cozido using natural volcanic heat - our customers always talk about how unique this experience is. We've designed these trips with a good mix of guided activities and personal time, so you can choose between soaking in thermal pools, walking to waterfalls at Ribeira dos Caldeiroes or joining optional whale watching excursions. For active travelers, there's kayaking and cycling around the crater lakes of Sete Cidades, while others prefer the cultural side with wine tasting in Pico's UNESCO vineyards and exploring Horta's marina where transatlantic yachts gather.

See all toursOur two-week tours really let you get to know the Azores properly, especially the walking routes across five distinctly different islands. The trails take you along Sao Jorge's impressive cliffs down to the fajas (coastal plains), through Pico's UNESCO vineyard landscape and also past Faial's paths lined with blue hydrangeas. What makes these longer stays special is how much local life you experience - there's traditional Fado in Lisbon before flying out, volcanic-cooked meals in Furnas and visits to family wineries. We've built in free days so you can pick your own activities; maybe whale watching from Lajes, climbing Pico mountain or wandering through Angra do Heroismo's historic quarter. Our travelers often mention how much they appreciate getting both guided walks and cultural experiences, saying it gives them a real sense of Azorean life.

You'll join others for daily walks then have evenings to yourself in Ponta Delgada and Horta. The Azores Escape tends to work really well for first visits too - you'll head out whale watching with the group, soak in Terra Nostra's geothermal pools and also visit family wineries for tastings. For those wanting more independence, the Short Break in Terceira combines the freedom of having your own car with structured activities like guided walks through Angra do Heroísmo and scheduled whale watching trips with others.
Our mature travelers consistently tell us they love the measured pace of our walking tours. The 14-day Walking in the Azores hits the sweet spot with daily walks of 4-5km and plenty of cultural stops along the way. Many of our guests particularly enjoy the coastal route from Ribeira Funda to Maia for its gentle terrain and sea views. The São Miguel Active Experience proves popular since guides can adjust activities to match different fitness levels - you'll explore pineapple farms, walk around crater lakes and also try meals cooked using volcanic heat. For travelers over 70, the Best of Porto & Azores combination works especially well, starting with relaxed city walks before moving to the islands, where our guides are great at setting just the right pace.

Based on what our travelers tell us, G Adventures comes out as the top choice for exploring the Azores. Their Chief Experience Officers (CEOs) really know their stuff, and the food gets lots of praise from everyone who travels with them. What's nice is how they adjust the pace to fit the group - you won't feel rushed or held back. Wingbuddy gets good marks too, especially for their whale watching trips which many travelers say is a highlight. They've picked quality places to stay and put together smart itineraries that make sense. The whole experience feels relaxed but well-organized. Explore has some solid itineraries that cover a lot of ground in the Azores, but we're hearing mixed things about their guides. Several of our customers mentioned communication issues and some organizational hiccups that took away from the experience. As for Destination Services, they've had some problems keeping to their advertised plans. Our travelers report significant changes to their itineraries, and the company hasn't been great about communicating these changes effectively. For most people looking to visit the Azores, I'd point them toward G Adventures first - they consistently deliver what they promise, and their groups tend to come back happy and eager for more. Wingbuddy would be my second choice, especially if you're keen on whale watching and prefer a more laid-back approach.
