When it comes to active adventures, Mongolia offers incredible diversity. Several tours combine multiple activities - you might ride horses across the steppes one day, then take camels across the singing sand dunes of Khongor the next. Our most sought-after trips include stays with nomadic families where you'll help with daily tasks like milking mares and making traditional dairy products. Travelers consistently tell us these homestays are highlights, especially when combined with activities like archery or helping herd livestock. For wildlife enthusiasts, we recommend tours that visit Hustai National Park at dusk to spot wild Takhi horses. The more challenging adventures head into the remote Altai region, where you'll stay in basic conditions but experience Mongolia at its most raw and authentic. What makes these active tours special is how they combine physical activities with genuine cultural immersion - you're not just passing through, but living alongside local families.
See all Active toursMongolia's wide spaces really open up on our explorer tours, with routes that take you deep into the country's most interesting corners. The Gobi route runs 8 days and hits all the highlights - you'll walk among red cliffs at Bayanzag where dinosaur bones still emerge from the earth and climb the singing sand dunes at Khongor that hum when winds sweep across them. If you're interested in wildlife and culture, our central Mongolia circuit lets you spot wild horses in Khustai and explore hidden monastery valleys. What our travelers love most is how these journeys mix the big sites with real local life. You'll share salty milk tea in nomad homes, watch golden eagles drift on thermals and drift off to sleep in your ger while free-roaming horses thunder past in the night.

Top operators in Mongolia
Looking at the feedback from our TourRadar travelers, there's a clear pattern in what works well and what needs attention when booking Mongolia tours. G Adventures has built up quite a following - their guides really know their stuff and the whole experience feels well put together. A particular standout is Eternal Landscapes, where Amaraa and the team consistently deliver smooth, well-executed tours. Our customers often mention how the staff goes above and beyond what's expected, handling everything from logistics and local insights to cultural connections. There's a bit of a mixed bag with Tour Mongolia though. While some travelers have had great experiences, others point out that guide quality can vary quite a bit from tour to tour. The group sizes aren't always consistent either, which can affect how personal the experience feels. These insights from our travelers help paint a clear picture: the tour operator you choose really does make a difference in Mongolia. It's worth taking time to read through specific tour reviews, look at group sizes and check recent feedback before making your choice.

Best places to start your Mongolia tour
Most Mongolia trips start from Ulaanbaatar (or UB as locals say), which makes sense since it's where the transport links come together. While a few people begin from Beijing or the old capital Kharkhorin, about 90% of our guests start their journey in UB. You'll want to plan ahead - our data shows most travelers book around 52 days before departure, especially for summer trips when ger camps fill up quickly. Pack warm clothes no matter when you visit, as even July nights get pretty cold out on the steppes. The best weather comes between June and September, with the Naadam Festival in July showing off traditional sports like wrestling, archery and horse racing. Spring brings baby animals to the steppes, while winter - though definitely challenging - rewards you with pristine snowy landscapes, the Eagle Festival and also chances to spot rare Przewalski's horses roaming free in Khustai National Park.
Discover Mongolia tours for every budget
Mongolia's budget tours offer real value for money with 8-10 day trips covering the classic Gobi route. You'll find yourself sleeping in traditional ger camps, getting hands-on with nomad life - from milking yaks to making dairy products the old way. The tours take you through some incredible places like ice-filled gorges and red sandstone formations. Our customers really connect with the cultural side, staying with local families and riding camels across the dunes. You'll visit important spots like Gandan Monastery, Bogd Khan Palace and also the Flaming Cliffs where dinosaur bones still surface. The local guides do a fantastic job bringing Mongolia's history to life, which our budget-focused travelers consistently mention in their feedback.
The luxury side of Mongolia takes things to another level with premium ger camps that include private bathrooms, jacuzzis and top-tier service. These 7-10 day journeys feature exclusive experiences like private access to reindeer tribes, traditional shamanic ceremonies and specially designed routes through the Taiga forest. Our travelers love those special touches - like relaxing in Tsenkher's thermal pools with grassland views stretching forever, or watching private chefs prepare khorkhog in remote locations. The gers themselves are impressive at 120 square meters, with panoramic windows and custom decorations. The guides really set these tours apart - they're often academics who can talk about everything from ancient rock art to contemporary Mongolian politics.

Seven-day Mongolia tours really show you what makes this country special. Popular routes combine the Orkhon Valley's UNESCO sites and time in the Gobi Desert. Nights are spent in ger camps near local families, where our travelers often end up helping milk yaks and learning traditional dairy making. You'll visit Kharkhorum, the ancient capital, with its Erdene Zuu Monastery circled by 108 white stupas. The route through Khogno Khan includes hikes to hidden temples and camel rides across the Elsen Tasarkhai dunes. Mongolia's wild landscape tours really hit the mark for solo travelers, running 13-15 days which gives you time to properly sink into the experience. When you're out spotting wild horses in Hustai National Park or climbing the Gobi's sand dunes, you'll find yourself sharing these moments with other independent travelers - our solo guests often tell us about the lasting friendships they make along the way. The homestay routes through central Mongolia are particularly good for meeting people, both locals and fellow travelers, while you try your hand at traditional archery and learn about dairy making. Our local guides handle all the complex logistics but keep things loose enough to follow interesting opportunities that pop up, something our solo customers really appreciate.
Our 8-10 day mixed activity tours really work for young adults who want to pack in lots of experiences. You might start out hiking through the Gobi's ice gorges, spend your afternoon learning traditional archery and end up helping nomad families with their evening milking - it's proper hands-on stuff. The tours including Khongor Sand Dunes are especially popular; you'll get a proper workout climbing those dunes and come away with amazing photos too. Our younger travelers tell us they love how the tours mix up physical activities with real cultural experiences, especially during homestays where they get to properly engage with local families.
The 7-8 day tours really suit our senior travelers, offering quality experiences without pushing too hard. These routes use good ger camps with proper facilities while getting you right into the heart of Mongolia. The central routes work especially well, taking you through Karakorum's ancient monasteries and the Orkhon Valley without too many long drives in between. Many of our older guests particularly enjoy stopping at Tsenkher's hot springs, which offers nice breaks between cultural visits. Our senior travelers often mention how much they value having guides who know when to adjust the pace and drivers who can handle Mongolia's bumpy terrain with care.

- Spring 2025
Spring brings new life to Mongolia's steppes, and our April tours showcase baby animals everywhere you look. The foals in Hustai National Park are a highlight, running alongside their mothers, while the Gobi warms up enough for proper hiking through Yol Valley where ice still holds onto the canyon walls. Our 5-7 day routes mix countryside time with culture - you'll start at Gandan Monastery in Ulaanbaatar before heading to ger camps where families are busy with spring work like mare milking and making traditional dairy products. The weather keeps you guessing, but our guests say that's what makes it interesting - you might need your winter coat one day and be picking wildflowers the next.

Summer's long days open up Mongolia for deeper exploration on our 8-14 day tours. You'll get hands-on with nomad life - maybe helping milk yaks at sunrise, walking to tucked-away temples by afternoon and watching the light change on Bayanzag's red cliffs come evening. Our travelers really get into the outdoor living - riding horses across the steppes, hiking to Orkhon Valley waterfalls and learning traditional archery at the ger camps. These summer routes balance active days with cultural immersion - you'll sleep near wild horse herds, cook using local methods and spend nights under some of the clearest starry skies you'll ever see.

- Fall / Autumn 2025
Autumn makes Mongolia's landscapes turn golden, and our 5-7 day September and October tours make the most of it. Our travelers especially like watching Terelj National Park's birch forests change to bright yellow. The clear, cool weather is perfect for hiking through Gobi canyons and exploring old monastery ruins. Nights get chilly, but our guests say that makes the ger camps even more welcoming - you'll share meals with nomad families and might catch the final festivals before winter arrives. Tourist numbers drop off but the local welcome stays warm, which makes autumn really good for anyone wanting closer connections with Mongolian culture.

- Winter 2025 / 2026
Mongolia in winter offers an entirely different side of the country through 5-12 day tours. Our travelers tell us there's something really special about watching Przewalski's horses move through the white landscapes of Khustai, their breath visible in the cold air. The Gobi takes on a new character - you'll walk through snow-covered dunes and spot gazelles searching for food in the valleys. We focus on genuine experiences like learning to build ger fires the traditional way, sharing fermented mare's milk with local families and watching eagle hunters work with their birds. Yes, it gets seriously cold below zero, but you'll practically have places like Erdene Zuu Monastery to yourself.
