- Pokhara and Poon Hill Trek 9 Days
I loved the tour and would have loved to stay even longer if I could. Everything was perfectly organized from A to Z and the tour guide always has an open ear for all questions. The hike itself is physically challenging, but my guide was always understanding when I wanted to take a break. It was a wonderful experience and worth it. I can only warmly recommend this agency and wish you a great time in beautiful Nepal.
- Nar Phu Valley Trek
What an amazing crazy adventure this was! Although my travel companion and I are very experienced bushwalkers, this was our first time in the Himalayas at such high altitude and we were unsure of what to expect. Being that Mount Adventure Holidays is a brand new tour company, there were a few rough patches (quite literally). However, we were pleasantly surprised that the Owner / Operator of the company sat down with us both before and after our trip to get constructive feedback and suggestions on what could have been done differently. We were more than happy to provide such info and I have no doubt Mount Adventures will continue to improve their itineraries for future trips. The main issue was that we had too short of a time frame. We didn’t realise how variable conditions in Nepal can be, and because this trek was at the end of a longer holiday, we hadn’t left any extra days between finishing and our flight home. As it was, it would have been extremely difficult to complete the trek in the 9 days allotted due to the remote region having suffered unusually heavy rains in the weeks prior to our visit. This meant the high mountain ‘road’ (I say that loosely because it was more like a narrow, bumpy and winding dirt track on a cliff’s edge) was completely destroyed in a number of places making it impassable by 4WD vehicle. So what should have been just 9 hrs of transport in Day 1 of our planned itinerary turned into two very long days of combined walking and haggling for reasonable passage in local jeeps with up to 16 people crammed inside, on the back and on the roof in order to get to the walk’s starting point. The result was that we lost our single rest / acclimatisation day straight off the bat. On Day 3, we were finally able to start the trek. The first two actual days on the track are quite long and arduous with a large altitude gain that would definitely be problematic for walkers who are not already fit and acclimatised. Luckily this was not an issue for us because we had done some shorter hikes at altitude in Bhutan immediately prior, and were taking Diamox as a preventive. But we did come across another couple who had to come down due to symptoms of altitude sickness, so I would suggest breaking the first two days up into three, possibly four shorter days to allow an easier adjustment. There are plenty of beautiful little places to stay along the way, and having extra time would better do justice to the stunning region. By Day 5, things took a turn for the worse when my travel partner came down with a terrible flu / respiratory infection and a temperature of 39 degrees (we know it wasn’t altitude sickness because I had just gotten over the same sickness). He was in bad shape, and because we had no time to take any rest days, we disappointingly had to turn back after Phu instead of continuing to Nar and over the 5300m high pass. We now tell people we did the Nar-less Phu Valley Trek. Besides extending the trip itinerary to a minimum of 13-14 days, some other suggestions we had were as follows: – Add a disclaimer about weather / roads / and possibly needing extra cushioning days between the end of the walk and international flights. – It was a bit unclear how to go about getting the the first night of accomodation paid for, so maybe either add clear booking instructions in the tour description, or just book everyone at the same local hotel each trip. – Include the distances in km/m + the elevation gain in order to give a more accurate idea of what’s in store for each day. – Add a few more acclimatisation days off for extra rest and exploration time (at least one in Nar as well as Phu). – Add the exact cost for a porter (including transport) in the tour description. – Add a comprehensive ‘what you’ll need to bring’ list in the tour description. – A clearer list of exclusions (ie hot showers) and inclusions in the tour description, especially a disclaimer that ground transport in a private vehicle is only possible if there are enough people in the tour group; travelling the 7+hrs from Kathmandu to Besisahar by overcrowded mini van was terrible! – A better quality Hotel in Besisahar on the last night as the one we stayed in was NOT good to put it nicely! Lastly, I cannot say enough about our excellent guide and porter who were both very helpful, capable and knowledgeable — I will gladly request them again in the future. Overall, this was an epic and rewarding trip. We hope to return next year to finish the other half of the trek with the same tour company!
