Terranova stands out as the stronger choice for cycling along the Moselle, based on what our travelers tell us. Their tours get consistently good feedback about the practical details - they provide clear maps, book nice places to stay and arrange really good meals along the way. Utracks offers an interesting boat and bike combo, and while their boat crew gets high marks and the food onboard is excellent, there are some weak spots. Several cyclists mentioned they struggled with unclear directions during self-guided segments, and some found it tricky when guides weren't fully comfortable speaking English. If you're choosing between the two, Terranova seems to have their logistics well sorted out, while Utracks needs to iron out some communication issues. That said, both operators know the Moselle route well and put together solid itineraries - it really comes down to whether you prefer a pure cycling experience or want to mix it up with time on the water and also on wheels. The key difference seems to be in the details - Terranova has refined their self-guided materials over time, while Utracks might need to put some work into making their instructions clearer for independent riders.

"It was a wonderful trip, even if the weather was very mixed. The staff were super, courteous, attentive, it's a shame that the language didn't always work. Perhaps it was also good because we all made an effort to understand each other better. The management staff always tried to respond to our wishes.

"Steve Born, CMO of Globus, should be recognized for his courageous actions aboard the Avalon Imagary 2 on the night of July 20th. Two criminals attempted to board the vessel when Mr. Born intercepted them. An altercation occurred and while Mr. Born was injured he succeeded in preventing them from gaining access to passengers. While the sheep slept and the wolves boarded a sheepdog appeared and prevented violence to passengers or other crew.

Top Moselle travel itineraries to fit your plans
The 7-day routes along the Moselle give you a proper taste of river life. The Trier to Koblenz stretch follows the river's smooth curves, where Roman history meets wine culture. You'll discover Germany's oldest wine village in Piesport - they still age their wines in centuries-old Roman cellars. Our cyclists spend active mornings on dedicated riverside paths before exploring spots like Cochem's castle perched high above the valley. Many tell us they love coming back to their river barge each evening, where they're greeted by friendly crew and good local food. The medieval charm of Bernkastel's timber-framed streets makes a perfect afternoon stop.
Don't miss out on visiting:
Trier, Piesport, Traben-Trarbach, Cochem, Koblenz
With 10 days to explore, you can add more cultural depth to your journey. Some routes start in Amsterdam's canal district before heading south through the Rhine Gorge to meet the Moselle. We've included special moments like evening concerts at Engers Castle and private wine sessions at Schloss Johannisberg, which has produced wines for over 1,000 years. Other trips begin in Paris, giving you time in the French capital before joining your river ship. Our travelers often mention loving the active choices - there's castle hikes, vineyard cycling and quiet spots perfect for canoeing.
Don't miss out on visiting:
Remich, Luxembourg, Bernkastel, Cochem, Rudesheim am Rhein, Rhine Gorge, Cologne, Amsterdam
Two-week trips let you really get to know the Moselle, often paired with time in Switzerland or the Netherlands. Starting in Lucerne, you can take the cable car up Mount Pilatus for Alpine views before meeting your ship in Basel. These longer journeys include unique stops like the former German Central Bank's underground vault and Utrecht's historic canals, which actually came before Amsterdam's famous waterways. Many routes finish at Palace Het Loo, once a summer home for Dutch royalty. Our guests tell us these longer trips give them time to properly understand everything from local wines to medieval towns and daily life along Europe's most interesting wine river.

Demographics
River cruises along the Moselle really shine for couples, starting with our popular Mainz route that lets you set your own pace at each stop. The crew consistently gets high marks from our travelers - they create such a welcoming atmosphere that it adds something special to the whole journey. You'll find comfortable cabins throughout, and some boats offer upgraded rooms that our customers say are worth considering. The Luxembourg to Amsterdam route is another favorite, combining local vineyard visits with private tastings. In the evenings, you might catch a classical concert in a historic venue or watch the UNESCO-listed Rhine Gorge drift by. What works particularly well is having choices each day - join a guided walk through medieval streets, hop on a bike or simply relax on deck as castles and vineyards pass by.
For young adults who want to stay active, our Moselle tours hit just the right notes. We've got several routes that mix cycling and sailing - you'll spend your days on two wheels and evenings on the water. The cycling is moderately challenging but totally doable, following riverside paths between historic towns and also vineyards. The Luxembourg route stands out, offering castle hikes, wine country cycling and Roman ruins in Trier. You'll get plenty of chances to try local drinks, like authentic Kölsch beer in Cologne's traditional brewhouses. Each day blends activity and culture nicely - maybe start with morning cycling, check out a historic mustard mill in the afternoon and finish with wine tasting in medieval cellars.
Our senior travelers particularly enjoy how the Moselle river cruises balance comfort and cultural experiences. The most-booked routes include optional guided walks through towns like Cochem, Bernkastel-Kues and also Trier, but there's always freedom to explore solo or stay onboard. The boats feature good viewing areas and stabilizers for smooth sailing, while the crew provides attentive service that our customers frequently mention in their feedback. One especially popular cruise combines UNESCO site tours in Trier, visits to family wineries and easy village walks. Evening activities often feature local performers and regional wine tastings, with daytime stops planned at a comfortable pace that lets you really take in each location.

- Spring 2025
The Moselle really comes alive in spring, especially for river cruises and cycling trips. Setting off from Luxembourg, you can join guided vineyard walks before the summer crowds arrive, plus hop on a bike between villages whenever you feel like stretching your legs. Our travelers often tell us how magical it is watching the morning mist lift off the river, slowly revealing those medieval castles and terraced vineyards. Some clever routes mix Amsterdam's tulip season with Moselle wine country, giving you both Dutch gardens and German wines in one go. We've found the smaller ships work perfectly this time of year - they can pull right into the heart of towns like Cochem and Bernkastel-Kues, where you'll meet fewer tourists than in peak months.
- Summer 2025
Summer opens every possible way to explore the Moselle. The river cruises hit that sweet spot between comfort and cultural immersion - you can relax on deck as castles drift past, then step ashore to wander through Trier's Roman ruins or join a local mustard-making workshop in one of the valley's historic mills. Our bike-and-barge tours are particularly popular; customers love cycling through vineyards and medieval villages by day, then returning to a comfortable boat each evening. Many trips include nice touches like castle concerts and private tastings at family wineries. The guides get loads of praise for pointing out those local details you'd probably miss on your own.

- Fall / Autumn 2025
Autumn puts the Moselle's wine heritage front and center. The Rhine-Moselle combination cruises time their visits perfectly for harvest festivals in Bernkastel-Kues, Cochem and other wine towns. Our guests love watching the grape harvest from deck, then heading into centuries-old cellars for tastings. The cycling tours work brilliantly in autumn too - the paths are quieter and you'll find plenty of village wine festivals to stop at. Many routes include walks through working vineyards where you can chat with families who've been making wine here for generations. The evening entertainment gets great feedback, with local musicians coming aboard and special harvest dinners featuring regional dishes and also wines.
