Travel Colorado your way
Colorado's backcountry trails open up a world of hiking at different skill levels. The Ute Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park sits at 11,400 feet - it's where our groups often spot bighorn sheep and eagles soaring above the trees. If you're after something more isolated, our guided backpacking trips take you to camp by quiet subalpine lakes before climbing a 13,425-foot peak that you'll likely have all to yourself. The Wild Basin area has become even more interesting lately with regular moose sightings near the waterfalls and meadows full of wildflowers. Our travelers tell us they love how the guides pack such good trail lunches, and one mentioned how their guide "weighed all factors each day (weather, group's energy) in choosing the right hike" to match what the group could handle.
See all Hiking & Trekking toursColorado's diversity really shines through on the 9-10 day explorer tours that give you a proper look at the state. Starting in Denver, you'll drive the Trail Ridge Road which happens to be North America's highest continuous paved road - and that's just the beginning. Our travelers tell us they love how these tours mix structured visits with free time to explore. You can check out sustainable urban farms, hop on historic trains and wander through old mining towns at your own pace. The routes usually take you to Great Sand Dunes National Park where you'll see North America's tallest dunes reaching 229 meters and also Mesa Verde National Park with its ancient Puebloan homes built right into the cliffs. What works well is how you get both city time in Denver and Boulder plus remote spots like the mountain passes along the Million Dollar Highway.

Both Collette and Southwest Adventure Tours get mostly positive feedback, but they each have their own strengths and little hiccups. Collette does well with the big picture stuff - their itineraries make sense, their guides really know their material and they use comfortable buses. The main issue some of our travelers mention is the Doubletree hotel in Grand Junction; it needs attention on the cleanliness front. Southwest Adventure Tours (SWAT) seems to nail the personal touch, especially with their guide Sarah. Our customers particularly like how she picks great local restaurants and keeps things fun while staying professional. She's clearly passionate about showing people around. That said, a few travelers have pointed out some organizational bumps - sometimes the timing feels off and occasionally guides seem a bit unprepared. In comparison, while Collette runs like a well-oiled machine with the logistics, SWAT gives you that more intimate, personalized experience but might need to tighten up their planning. If you're looking for reliability and structure, Collette could be your pick. If you value a more personal touch and don't mind the occasional schedule shuffle, SWAT might suit you better - especially if you get Sarah as your guide.

"Emily was a great guide. Very organized, professional, safety conscious, and weighed all the factors each day (weather, group's energy, etc) in choosing the right hike for the day. She prepared great lunches on the trail which kept us in good spirits. And she was very personable, upbeat and was a member of the group. One of the best guides I've ever hiked with.

"Love the overall trip The tour director was exceptional Was very informative and entertaining The Doubletree was dirty and would have preferred being in the open car on the Silverton-Durango narrow gauge railroad The Hotel in Durango was beautiful and highly recommend Enjoyed the breakfast at the Denver hotel but the downtown was very limited because of the construction

Demographics
Couples find plenty of ways to connect on our Colorado tours. The 10-day routes from Denver let you go at your own speed - maybe you'll spend a morning floating in Glenwood Springs' warm mineral pools, then take an afternoon drive together along the twisting Million Dollar Highway. In Palisade, our travelers often tell us about wonderful evenings spent tasting local wines and sharing dinner under clear mountain skies. Active pairs tend to love our Rocky Mountain hiking tours that use comfy inns as base camps - you'll discover hidden alpine lakes and waterfalls by day, then return to proper beds each night. Winter brings its own magic around Grand Lake; picture yourselves snowshoeing through silent pine forests and soaking in steamy hot springs as snow falls.
Our senior travelers like how the coach tours handle Colorado's mountain roads while still reaching remarkable places. These 7-9 day trips from Denver include plenty of photo stops and comfortable hotels throughout. We plan the timing carefully - you'll see Mesa Verde's ancient homes in perfect afternoon light and take the cog railway up Pikes Peak instead of tackling the drive. The cultural elements really resonate too; our older guests often mention how much they enjoy exploring preserved mining towns and chatting with local farming families. Tour directors get constant praise for reading the group well, adjusting the pace when needed and always having good backup plans ready.
For families exploring Colorado, our multi-day tours blend education with outdoor fun. The most popular routes start in Denver and mix up city exploration with national park visits - you'll see elk and moose in Rocky Mountain National Park, learn about ancient Puebloan history at Mesa Verde and watch the kids' faces light up when they first spot the massive dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park. The vintage Durango & Silverton Railroad is always a hit; the steam train winds through canyons you can't reach by car, and kids love pressing their faces against the windows. We've found farm visits really connect too - families can ride horse-drawn carriages through orchards, taste produce right off the vine and learn how local farmers keep Colorado's soil healthy for future generations.

Best time to visit Colorado
- Summer 2025
Summer opens every trail Colorado has to offer. Our multiday trips take you hiking to alpine lakes above 11,000 feet and include cultural visits to McGraw Ranch where you'll learn about the early pioneers. For those seeking a real challenge, some tours summit remote 13,425-foot peaks where you'll rarely see other hikers, while others focus on easier walks past Wild Basin's waterfalls and meadows full of wildflowers. The full summer experience combines Rocky Mountain National Park trails with trips to Mesa Verde's ancient cliff homes and rides on old mountain trains through the San Juans.
