What people love about Italy Tours
- Amalfi Coast Walking - Agriturismo
Thank you for an incredible week. It was my first Explore experience and it delivered far more than I expected. A fantastic group, an incredible location, some spectacular walks and days out, lovely accommodation and all perfectly organised by our leader Phil.
- Sicilian Secrets - Tour of Sicily 8 days
We were in Sicily for a total of 8days, which were with Sicilian Secrets. Placido was our amazing tour guide. The tour was more than we could ever have expected. Always professional and always recommending the best places to visit on our own time. I can't wait to go back.
- Italy City Break - 5 Days
Being in Italy was amazing! Being able to see all the cities in 5 days was great! And the views were breathtaking. The hotels were nice and accommodating. The only downside were the meals that were provided as there was no selection and they were bland. Also our tour guide didn’t seem she was the most organized and didn’t explain things and left a lot of us confused or left to figure out important things on your own.
Most popular destinations in Italy
South Italy captivates travelers with experiences that define the Italian spirit. The Amalfi Coast stands out as an absolute must-see, where TourRadar customers find themselves wandering through picture-perfect coastal villages and diving into local culture. A boat journey to Capri reveals crystal-clear Mediterranean waters, while stops for lemoncello-spiked granitas make the trip distinctly Italian. History buffs can't miss Pompeii, where guided tours bring ancient Roman streets to life with stories and context you wouldn't get on your own. For an authentic touch, many of our travelers recommend booking a stay at an agriturismo along the Amalfi Coast - these working farms offer cooking classes and access to ancient hiking paths with seaside views. The food scene deserves special mention, from proper Neapolitan pizza in Naples to fresh sfogliatella pastries in Amalfi and also house-made limoncello in Sorrento. April-May and September-October give you that sweet spot of nice weather without the crowds, making these months perfect for both coastal exploration and cultural immersion. Many visitors particularly enjoy the shoulder season festivals celebrating local harvests and traditions.
See all South Italy toursLake Como's boat rides to Bellagio offer a perfect view of the Alps as they tower over the elegant village - it's consistently one of the highlights when touring Northern Italy. The Bernina Express train route does something special too, cutting through the Swiss Alps with wide windows that show off views our guests can't stop talking about. Food experiences here go deep: you'll learn authentic carbonara from local cooks in Roman kitchens and get to know the subtle differences between wines during intimate tastings at family vineyards in Franciacorta. For the best experience without peak crowds and with just-right temperatures, plan your visit during April-May or September-October - you'll still catch the buzz of outdoor cafes and lake activities in really comfortable weather.
See all Northern Italy toursThe real soul of Central Italy comes through in how our travelers experience it - whether they're exploring Rome's ancient sites with knowledgeable local guides or joining cooking classes in Florence's historic center. We consistently hear about special moments in places like Cinque Terre, where walking the coastal paths between those five colorful villages gives you an entirely different perspective of the Mediterranean. Our customers particularly connect with Tuscan wine experiences, sitting down in old stone cellars while local wine makers share their craft and knowledge across multiple tastings. What works really well is how these tours mix scheduled visits to major sites with plenty of free time to explore - you can wander medieval backstreets, find that perfect gelato shop or stop and chat with residents going about their day.
See all Central Italy toursSicily really shines with three experiences that our travelers keep raving about. Mount Etna takes center stage - you can trek its volcanic paths and drop by the wineries that dot its slopes. The Aeolian Islands offer something special, especially when you sail past Panarea and watch Stromboli light up the night sky with its natural display. What makes Sicily particularly interesting is how different historical periods come together - one moment you're walking through ancient Greek temples and theaters in Syracuse, the next you're admiring Norman castles and baroque piazzas. Food is deeply woven into daily life here; our guests particularly enjoy joining local cooking classes, exploring morning markets and finding the best street food spots in old neighborhoods. We've found that April-May or September-October hit the sweet spot - the temperature's just right and you'll dodge the summer crowds, which means more genuine interactions with locals and easier visits to popular attractions.

The magic of Italy extends all the way to the rivers, making river cruises a unique way to experience this beautiful country. Explore must-visit cities like Venice and Milan and enjoy the panoramic views from your ship.
See all River Cruise toursThe Amalfi Coast walking paths connect charming medieval villages along ancient limestone routes, ranging from easy 4km strolls to more challenging 13km daily hikes. One route our travelers mention often is the "Walk of the Gods" linking Bomerano to Positano - you get fantastic views across the Bay of Salerno the whole way. Up in the northern mountains, the Dolomites offer both gentle and tougher day hikes from a comfortable base in Dobbiaco. Many of our customers tackle the Strudelkopf summit at 2,307 meters and also explore the Three Peaks of Lavaredo circuit, which locals rate as one of their favorite trails. The guides really add something special here, sharing local food tips, pointing out wildlife and explaining cultural traditions as you walk.
See all Hiking & Trekking toursPuglia offers so much beyond the usual tourist sites. Our 9-day small groups combine walks through UNESCO-listed places like Alberobello's trulli houses with visits to organic farms and family wineries. Customers tell us they love the variety - you might explore Matera's cave homes one day, then learn traditional pasta-making or sample oils at an historic masseria the next. The pace works well between cultural visits to places like Lecce's baroque center and active exploration of coastal spots like Polignano a Mare, where high cliffs meet clear blue water.
See all Active toursTuscany unfolds beautifully from a bike seat, with routes that balance good exercise and cultural discoveries. You'll pedal through medieval villages and ancient pilgrim trails, stopping at family vineyards and olive groves along the way. The Chianti section is a particular favorite among our cyclists, with quiet country roads linking hilltop towns and local wineries. The days have a nice rhythm - morning rides through cypress-lined lanes lead into afternoons spent cooking with local families or tasting wines in centuries-old cellars. We've mapped the routes to avoid busy roads while hitting the best views.

Best tour companies for Italy tours
Looking at the Italian tour companies that get consistently good feedback, Dimensione Sicilia and Sicilian Secrets stand out for their deep local knowledge. Their guides really get into the details about Sicily's history and culture, plus you'll get to try lots of local wines and traditional dishes along the way. If you're watching your budget but still want a proper Italian experience, Italy on a Budget Tours is worth checking out - they're particularly good with their Amalfi Coast routes. Yes, you might stay in simpler hotels, but their guides bring such energy to the tours and you'll likely make some good friends in your group. Meet and Greet Italy does a solid job with the logistics - our travelers mention how smoothly everything runs from train connections to hotel check-ins. The guides are really responsive if you need anything, though a few customers have mentioned they wished the included meals were a bit better. What's nice about all these options is that they cover different styles of travel. Whether you want to dive deep into Sicily's food scene, keep things budget-friendly and social or just have everything organized without any hassle, there's something that fits.
Best places to start your Italy tour
Rome makes sense as your first stop - it's where 33 of our different tours begin. If Sicily interests you, both Catania and Palermo work well as starting points, while Venice and also Naples handle 13 and 9 tour departures respectively. Looking at our booking patterns, aim to lock in your plans about 4.5 months before you want to travel (that's 131 days). This timing gets you better choices and often saves money too. Smart travelers hit the main sites early in the morning or later in the day, then spend busy midday hours exploring quieter neighborhoods. What works really well is mixing scheduled tours with free time - you might follow a morning guide through Florence's galleries, then spend the afternoon finding your own way through backstreets and small squares.
Discover Italy tours for every budget
These 5-day Italy tours hit the sweet spot for travelers watching their budget while still seeing the good stuff. You'll start in Rome, work your way through Assisi's old-world streets and Florence's art-filled spaces, then finish up in Venice. Our customers really like how the schedule mixes guided visits with free time to explore - maybe join a Vatican Museums tour in the morning, then wander Rome's local streets in the afternoon. The hotels sit in handy spots and the transport runs smoothly between cities. While the included meals get mixed feedback, you'll appreciate the time-saving perks like skip-the-line access at major sites. There's room to add extras too, like day trips to Pisa or evening gondola rides in Venice.
For those seeking something special, our luxury tours deliver with thoughtful touches and excellent hotels. You'll travel between cities in business-class trains and stay at carefully picked 4-star hotels in the best locations. Our travelers love the personal elements - private transfers, expert local guides and quality food experiences. One popular route links Milan's fashion scene with Lake Como's grand villas and Venice's quiet canals. Down south, another favorite takes you through Italy's finest spots, where you'll stay in converted palazzos and learn cooking secrets in family estates. These tours nail the mix of comfort and real experiences - perhaps start with a private early-morning museum visit and end by making pasta with locals.

The social side really makes these trips special - our customers often mention how much they enjoy sharing the experience with fellow travelers while the guides handle everything. Sicily works particularly well for bigger groups; you'll visit Monreale's Norman Cathedral, stop at historic Marsala wineries and explore Mount Etna's slopes. While some mention early starts and occasional language mix-ups in multi-lingual groups, most love how the schedule balances organized activities with free time.
Small Group
421 tours in ItalyKeeping groups small at 12-16 people lets us dive deeper into Italian culture. These tours can visit places bigger groups just can't reach - think family vineyards in Piedmont or small pasta workshops in Bologna. Our travelers mention how nimble these small groups are - guides can switch things up based on interests and grab last-minute tables at local spots. The tours through Amalfi Coast's quieter villages and Puglia's lesser-known towns prove especially popular, with nights spent in unique spots like traditional trulli houses and converted farm properties.
Private / Personalized
338 tours in ItalyPrivate tours really shine on Southern Italy routes and the Venice-Florence-Rome circuit. Each trip adapts to you, featuring dedicated local experts, luxury vehicles and carefully chosen 4-star hotels. Our clients particularly value mixing famous sites with personal interests - you might pair a private Vatican visit with time exploring Rome's historic Jewish Quarter, or combine Tuscan wine tasting with cooking at a countryside villa. This flexibility comes in handy especially along the Amalfi Coast, where private drivers can dodge busy spots and take advantage of local events.

Another well-loved 10-day route circles Sicily from Palermo, mixing culture with hands-on experiences - you'll make chocolate in Modica, walk through Syracuse's Greek ruins and climb Mount Etna when conditions allow. The route includes less visited spots like Portofino's harbor and Lake Como's grand villas, plus enough free time to discover places on your own. Solo travelers really connect with our 8-day Sicily circuit - it's got private rooms in quality hotels and social group dinners that help you meet other explorers. People love getting hands-on with chocolate making in Modica, tasting wines in old Marsala cellars and walking through Syracuse's historic center with local experts who know all the hidden spots. For a shorter option, our 5-day Venice-Florence-Bologna route hits the sweet spot with street food tours, cooking classes and evening social meetups. We handle all the transport between cities so you can focus on exploring at your own pace during free time.
Italy's intimate 8-day Sicily tours blend cultural discovery with romantic moments that couples consistently praise. You'll craft chocolate side-by-side in Modica, explore historic wine cellars in Marsala and discover Syracuse's Greek theater in peaceful tranquility. The personal connections shine through when cooking in family homes, and the private tastings at centuries-old estates create memorable shared experiences. For a classic Italian journey, the 5-day Venice-Florence-Rome route balances guided visits with independent exploration, where skip-the-line access at major sites gives you more time to meander quiet canals or discover local eateries together. Those seeking extended time can opt for 10-day southern Italy journeys, combining cultural highlights with intimate experiences - from morning walks through Matera's cave dwellings to afternoon e-bike rides in Puglia's olive groves, before settling into authentic masserie farmhouses. Our tours maintain small groups of 12-16 travelers, which creates an ideal setting for couples while keeping the flexibility to adjust plans based on group interests.
Our younger guests often pick the Rome-to-Amalfi route which mixes culture with active experiences. It kicks off in Rome's ancient center before heading south to walk Pompeii's preserved streets and climb up Mount Vesuvius. The schedule works really well - you might spend your morning hiking the Path of Gods then have the afternoon free to find a quiet swimming spot near Positano. The 13-day grand tour covers all the main sites but leaves enough free days to join a cooking class, take a boat to Capri or explore Venice's quiet canals with others from your group.
The 8 and 10-day Sicily tours consistently rank high with our senior travelers who appreciate the balanced pace and well-chosen hotels. You'll get proper time at UNESCO sites like Syracuse's Greek theater and Monreale's Norman Cathedral, plus relaxed lunches and wine tastings without feeling rushed. Having everything organized - from moving luggage to booking restaurants - makes a real difference. The Venice-Florence-Rome rail routes work particularly well too, with hotels right in the center and fast-track entry at major sites which cuts down on walking and waiting time. Our guides are great at reading the group, mixing interesting commentary with well-timed rest stops.

What sets a guided Italy tour apart from independent travel?
Let's be real - guided Italy tours take the stress out of planning everything yourself so you can actually enjoy the experience. You've got expert guides showing you the hidden spots and sharing fascinating cultural insights that'll totally change how you see each destination. Take the Sicilian Secrets 8-day tour where guides like Placido and Ivan bring the stories to life or the Icons of Italy rail tour where Elisabetta and Milena make sure everything runs smoothly while sharing their deep local knowledge.
Which locally recognized cultural practices can visitors participate in, and where do they typically take place?
Jump into the passeggiata - that's the evening stroll where locals catch up and mingle in towns across Italy. You'll want to try the aperitivo scene too especially in Milan Florence and Venice where pre-dinner drinks and snacks are basically an art form. Bologna's the place to get your hands dirty learning authentic pasta-making from scratch. Over in Taormina you can join food tours sampling traditional Sicilian pastries and wines while Bologna's cooking classes let you dive deep into pasta-making techniques passed down through generations.
Which officially designated natural areas exist in Italy outside major urban centers, and what are the primary methods of accessing them?
Italy's natural spaces are absolutely stunning - take Cinque Terre National Park a UNESCO site where hiking trails connect five gorgeous coastal villages. Up in the Dolomites you'll find dramatic mountain landscapes with trails branching out from towns like Dobbiaco while Mt. Etna Europe's largest active volcano draws visitors for guided trips from Catania. The Cycle Tuscany tour lets you cruise through the Apuan Alps with an incredible downhill ride to Viareggio and if you're heading to the Dolomites the Hiking tour gets you up to Strudelkopf mountain by local bus for some seriously epic views.
Which local dishes are officially recognized in Italy as regional specialties, and where are they commonly served?
Italian food culture runs deep - you haven't really experienced Florence until you've had a proper Bistecca alla Fiorentina at a traditional trattoria. Northern Italy especially Venice and Milan is where you'll find amazing risotto dishes with endless variations. Along the Amalfi Coast the local trattorias serve up incredible Spaghetti alle Vongole right by the sea. Each region has its specialties like Florence's perfectly grilled T-bone steaks Venice's creamy risottos and those seaside restaurants along Amalfi where the pasta and seafood just hits different.
Which modes of public or private transport are most commonly used in Italy, and what are their main operating schedules or routes?
Getting around Italy is pretty straightforward - high-speed trains connect the major spots like Rome Florence Venice and Milan running frequently throughout the day. Local buses handle the smaller towns and villages with schedules posted at stops and private transfers fill in the gaps for those hard-to-reach places. Tours like the 5-day Italy City Break use deluxe coaches to zip between Assisi Siena and Florence while the Icons of Italy rail tour takes advantage of those fast trains to cover Venice Florence and Rome efficiently and comfortably.
