Bolivia's got these incredible landscapes that'll take your breath away like the Uyuni Salt Flats and Lake Titicaca where you can get into desert adventures and really connect with local indigenous communities.
What local cultural experiences can you actually be part of?
In Peru you can learn traditional weaving from the women at Ccaccaccollo co-op in the Sacred Valley which is pretty special. Over in Puno by Lake Titicaca you can stay with local families in Luquina and really get involved in their daily life helping with sheep or working in the fields. Bolivia's got this fascinating Witches' Market in La Paz where you can see Aymara healers at work and browse all sorts of traditional remedies. Out in the desert you can spend time with the Jukil community in their salt-brick homes and eat meals made from ingredients they've grown right there in the desert.
Where are the best natural areas to visit and how do you get to them?
Outside of busy Lima there's the Paracas National Reserve where you can take boat tours to the Ballestas Islands to see sea lions penguins flamingos all kinds of marine life. The Colca Canyon's incredible one of the world's deepest and you can explore it with guides from Arequipa. In Bolivia the Uyuni Salt Flats are just amazing you'll need a 4WD tour from Uyuni Town to see the red and blue lagoons and weird rock formations. Lake Titicaca's really special too highest navigable lake in the world and you can boat there from Puno or Copacabana to see these amazing floating islands made from totora reeds.
What are some less touristy routes people take and why do they choose them?
The Quarry Trail in Peru's a great alternative to the busy Inca Trail it's more challenging but you get to see some unique Inca ruins and the mountain views are incredible. In Bolivia taking the bus from La Paz to Sucre is actually really interesting you go through the Altiplano with these dramatic mountain passes and traditional villages along the way.
What local foods should you try and where's the best place to find them?
Ceviche's the big one in Peru raw fish in lime juice you'll find the best stuff in coastal cities like Lima and Paracas. Arequipa's got these great picanterias where you can try rocoto relleno these stuffed spicy peppers and queso helado which is actually this really unique ice cream. In Bolivia you've got to try salteñas they're these savory pastries filled with meat or vegetables you'll find them all over La Paz. In Uyuni you can actually stay in hotels made of salt and try dishes made with ingredients from the surrounding desert which is pretty cool.
