- The Inca Journey
My Peru trip was my first time traveling with G. I just got back and it's been a very pleasant experience. The trip was very well planned and efficiently organized, our group size was just right (14 people of various age groups) and we became like a big family by the end of the trip. The CEOs were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and helped us learn quite a bit about the history and culture of the various areas we visited. The modes of transportation were comfortable and convenient. The only public transport during the trip was flights between cities and the train ride from/to Aguas Calientes - Machu Pichu (which by the way is extremely comfortable, very scenic with beverage/snack service). At other times we were in private vans/minibuses. Accommodations were basic but clean and safe and the only complaint I have is about lack of hot water in a couple of our hotels in smaller towns/villages. I was traveling solo (a girl) and felt protected and looked after at all times. Overall I will recommend G-Adventures to everyone looking to do an adventurous trip with a smaller tour size and I will definitely consider booking with them in the future.

It was too good having the tour guides to explain all to us it made it very interesting

Machu Picchu stands as the crowning jewel of Andean experiences, where our travelers consistently tell us that photographs simply can't capture its true scale and majesty. The ancient Inca citadel reveals itself differently throughout the day as clouds drift past, creating an almost mystical atmosphere that leaves visitors spellbound. The Inca Trail journey itself has become legendary among our customers - it's a genuine mountain adventure with challenging ascents, ancient stone pathways and nights spent camping under star-filled skies. Our guides, who share deep knowledge of Inca history and local ecology, have earned particular praise for turning what could be just a tough trek into an enriching cultural experience. Travelers often describe how the changing ecosystems along the trail, from cloud forests to alpine grasslands, create a sense of walking through multiple worlds in just a few days.
See all Andes Mountains toursThe trek to Machu Picchu lives up to its reputation, with our travelers telling us it becomes one of those life-defining experiences they keep coming back to. You've got solid options for getting there - follow ancient footsteps on the Classic Inca Trail or take the quieter Quarry Trail, which gives you similar mountain scenery but with noticeably fewer people along the way. If time's tight, the train takes you straight to the site so you can focus on exploring the ruins. What makes these trips particularly special are the local guides who really know their history, and surprisingly, the food is remarkably good - even when camping, where skilled chefs cook up proper meals right there on the trail.
See all Machu Picchu toursImmerse yourself in the Amazon Rainforest, a vast green sanctuary teeming with diverse wildlife. Navigate the winding rivers, hike lush trails, spot exotic birds and encounter unique flora and fauna. It's a nature lover's paradise.
See all Amazon Rainforest toursThe Inca Trail is Peru's most loved trek, where TourRadar travelers tell us again and again how much they enjoy the path through cloud forests, ancient ruins and also mountain passes on their way to Machu Picchu. Our customers often mention spotting wildlife - hummingbirds zip between orchids while llamas graze near the camping spots. The real magic happens at sunrise when hikers reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where Machu Picchu slowly appears through the morning mist - our travelers say this moment stays with them forever. The guides get lots of praise for their deep knowledge of Incan history, pointing out medicinal plants and somehow creating great meals even in remote camps. While Dead Woman's Pass tests your legs, our travelers say the sense of achievement and authentic Andean cultural experience make every step worth it.

The classic 4-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu gives you a proper mix of ruins and raw nature. You'll camp at 3,100m after exploring sites like Huillca Raccay and Llactapata, while the alternative Quarry Trail takes you off the beaten path through local villages and the hidden ruins at Qory Song'o. Want a real challenge? The Salkantay Trek pushes you over a 4,630m pass where you'll feel the dramatic shift from icy peaks to misty cloud forests. Our camp meals get tons of praise - travelers can't believe they're getting fresh-baked cakes up in the mountains and traditional pachamanca cooked in earthen ovens. The porters and guides really make the difference here; they know these trails inside out and have the camps warm and ready before you arrive each evening.
See all Hiking & Trekking toursPeru's active trips mix up culture with physical challenges in clever ways. Our multi-day programs pair hiking with night walks to spot caimans and track howler monkeys in the Amazon, where local guides share their knowledge of medicinal plants. The Salkantay Nevado route kicks things up a notch with glacier lakes and high passes, though our guides know exactly how to help you adjust to the altitude. What our customers love most is how these shared challenges create real friendships - whether it's reaching that tough pass together or learning traditional coffee picking in mountain villages. You'll spend nights camping in remote spots but end up in comfortable lodges, which gives you the real outdoor experience without roughing it the whole time.

See all Coach / Bus toursPeru's rich cultural heritage comes alive through our most requested tours that pair Lima's colonial sites with Cusco's Incan architecture. Our travelers tell us they really appreciate starting in Lima's UNESCO old town, getting to know the pre-Columbian pieces at Larco Museum before heading up into the mountains. The guides earn constant praise - they really know their stuff about Spanish colonial and Incan history, especially when explaining architectural features at places like Santo Domingo Convent which sits right on top of the old Coricancha temple. Most explorer itineraries take you through the Sacred Valley to see Moray's intriguing circular terraces and also the salt ponds at Maras, where locals still harvest salt using techniques from pre-Incan times.

Top operators in Peru
Looking at these top Peru tour operators, Lima Tours comes out strong for cultural trips - our travelers consistently mention how well everything runs, from pickup times to local transport and accommodations. Their guides really know their history and cultural background, which makes a big difference when you're exploring places like Cusco, Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. TreXperience has built quite a reputation for trekking, especially on the Salkantay route. Their guides Elisban and Ray get lots of specific mentions in reviews for going above and beyond - like explaining local plants along the trail and sharing stories about growing up in the region. The food is a highlight too - their chefs Lorenzo and Amilcar somehow manage to cook up amazing meals even at high altitude camps. Intrepid rounds out the top choices, particularly good if you want to combine the Inca Trail with time in the Amazon. Their guides Marcia, Mel and Patricia bring real expertise - they know exactly when to time arrivals at key sites to avoid crowds, plus they're great at spotting wildlife and explaining the ecology. What makes their Amazon trips special is how they connect you with local communities and get you properly immersed in the rainforest environment, not just viewing it from a distance. The good thing about all three companies is they handle the complex permits and logistics that Peru requires, so you can focus on enjoying the experience rather than worrying about arrangements.

"An extremely well organised tour. Our guide Monica was an amazing guide. Monica went out of her way to make the trip safe, enjoyable and comfortable. Our chef Vidal made an amazing variety and quality of meals each day. Our chief porter Juan did a great job organising the porters. Katy in the office was good to deal with in the lead up to the hike. I highly recommend the 4 day Inka trail hike. We had 14 porters carrying 20kg each for the 6 paid customers and the attention to detail was awesome. The Inka ruins we saw along the way and MachuPicchu was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"Loved Peru. I found the people take great pride in their cities, culture and history and it shows in how clean the streets are, how great the food is and how wonderful the guides are. Loved the wildlife, the scenery and archeological sites too. My only downside was the airport.. Delayed flights and when trying to return home, no signage to show the directions from domestic (Cusco to Lima) to international section of airport. When I asked for help, I was told to go out the door, come back in the door next to it, only to find out that I needed to go outside, go to section adjacent and then go upstairs to departures which also had no sign there for "international departures". The LATAM staff gave me the run around on my luggage. One person said it would go automatically to Newark another said pick up your luggage in Lima and transfer to United. My luggage never arrived in Lima nor in Newark. When I arrived in Newark the United people said that LATAM was lying as it is never sent on directly and had to be collected and transferred by hand in Lima. I had to file a lost baggage claim upon final arrival in Canada . Still waiting for news.

Best places to start your Peru tour
Cusco kicks off 47% of our Peru trips - its mix of colonial buildings and ancient ruins makes it perfect for getting used to the altitude before heading higher. Lima comes in as the next most popular starting point, especially for travelers keen to dive into Peru's excellent food scene before moving to the mountains. You'll find some great alternative kickoff points too: Puerto Maldonado for Amazon explorations, Huaraz for tackling the Cordillera Blanca peaks and also Arequipa if you're headed to Colca Canyon. Our booking patterns show you should lock in your spot about 110 days ahead, especially if you're traveling during the busy months of May through September. Most people find 2-3 days in Cusco works well for altitude adjustment, and San Pedro Market becomes a daily stop for many - it's ideal for trying Andean ingredients and watching local life play out. If the altitude worries you, many of our guests start in the Sacred Valley instead; it sits lower than Cusco, letting you work your way up more gradually.

The Inca Trail treks give you great value on a budget - they run 4-7 days with professional porters doing all the heavy lifting while you focus on the hiking through the high Andes. Our travelers love how the expert cooks manage to prepare traditional Peruvian dishes right at camp, even cooking Pachamanca in earth ovens at high altitude. If you're looking to save money but still have a real adventure, the Tambopata jungle tours are perfect for 3-5 days of wildlife watching. You'll spot monkeys, caimans and also river otters from comfortable community-run lodges. The Sacred Valley rounds out our wallet-friendly options, mixing market visits at Pisac with walks through Moray's farming terraces and also the fascinating salt ponds at Maras.
Our luxury Sacred Valley tours really shine with their restored colonial mansion stays and private guides who tune the pace to what interests you most. Starting in Lima's historic center, you'll get private access to pre-Columbian collections at the Larco Museum before moving to Cusco where expert guides show you Spanish colonial buildings sitting right on top of Inca foundations. The timing makes these high-end tours special - you visit major sites early morning or late afternoon when crowds are thin, plus enjoy scenic Vistadome train rides through the Andes with panoramic views and also gourmet dining onboard.

Our week-long tours really dig into the Cusco region, with options for different fitness levels. The classic Inca Trail starts in the Sacred Valley before taking on the 4-day trek to Machu Picchu - you'll cross Dead Woman's Pass at 4,215 meters, which is quite something. Our guides are proper experts; they'll point out orchids, hummingbirds and deer along the way. If you're more interested in local life, we've got alternatives that mix Cusco's colonial buildings with visits to weaving cooperatives and local markets. You'll see Moray's agricultural terraces and the salt ponds at Maras, where families still harvest salt using pre-Inca techniques. Every tour wraps up with a scenic ride back to Cusco on the Vistadome train - the panoramic windows make it special.

Solo travelers find great companions on our small group treks, particularly the Inca Trail and Salkantay routes. You'll naturally connect with others while hiking mountain passes and sharing meals cooked by our skilled mountain chefs. The 4-day Salkantay Trek is especially popular, mixing solid hiking with relaxed evenings at camp. Our 10-day Cusco tours work nicely for singles too - you'll walk through markets with local guides, join cooking classes and also meet other travelers. For jungle experiences, our 3-day Tambopata tours offer private rooms in quality lodges plus guided wildlife walks in small groups.
Couples love our luxury Sacred Valley tours that combine stays in restored colonial mansions with private visits to ancient sites. Many opt for 6-8 day trips starting in Lima's old quarter before moving to boutique Sacred Valley lodges. The schedule works perfectly - mornings at Inca sites like Moray's agricultural terraces, afternoons learning traditional crafts in Chinchero and also evenings enjoying high-end Andean cuisine that showcases local ingredients.
Young adults tend to choose our active treks, especially the 4-day Salkantay route that climbs to impressive 4,630m passes. It's got everything - challenging mountain hiking, nights under stars, visits to coffee farms and also lessons in traditional cooking. The classic Inca Trail attracts plenty of younger travelers too, offering that perfect mix of physical challenge and historical sites. Our 8-day combination tours are also popular, blending hiking with time in Cusco and also wildlife spotting in Tambopata.
Senior travelers appreciate our thoughtfully paced 6-8 day tours combining Lima's colonial sites with Cusco's Inca heritage. We use comfortable hotels near city centers and guides who know exactly how to manage altitude adjustment. Many seniors prefer taking the Vistadome train to Machu Picchu instead of trekking, with extra time in the Sacred Valley visiting Chinchero's textile workshops, Maras' salt terraces and also exploring how Spanish colonial architecture merged with Inca foundations.
Peru works beautifully for families, especially on our 6-8 day Sacred Valley and Cusco tours where the pacing fits kids perfectly. We start easy in Cusco with chocolate tasting for the little ones while parents get used to the altitude. The Sacred Valley really shines - our guides have a knack for getting children excited about Inca engineering at places like Ollantaytambo's fortress. The Living Museum of Yucay is a family favorite where kids can feed llamas and alpacas and also watch local artisans at work. For families who want some hiking, we offer shorter Inca Trail options that give you the trek experience without overdoing it.

Most of our travelers start in Lima exploring the colonial center and Larco Museum, then fly to Cusco where guides point out how Spanish buildings sit right on top of Inca walls. The 8-day trips through Cusco, Sacred Valley and also Machu Picchu let you take it slow - there's time to check out Moray's circular terraces, watch salt being harvested at Maras and spend quality time with weaving communities in Chinchero. Spring's perfect hiking weather makes the Inca Trail Express popular too, mixing cultural visits with 4 days of solid trekking.
