What people love about Mediterranean Tours
- Rome to Lisbon: Coasts & Countryside
I did Rome to Madrid on a shoestring. It was an amazing tour! We visited a lot of places but still had enough time to chill and relax. Highlights were Lagos, Lisbon and Grenada. Alhumbra is a must see! Our tour guide was incredible! Lalo was AMAZING! He was so helpful and full of energy that you couldn't help but be excited as well. He is such an amazing human being, it was a privilege to meet and travel with him! He gave us amazing orientation walks and is quite the photographer. All in all - an amazing trip!!
- Dubrovnik to Athens
Tour was everything we hoped it would be. Goran was very knowledgeable and took care of our every need. Would highly recommend.
- Balkan Essentials in 12 days
Our guide was excellent. Itinerary was good but little more time in Duvobnick will make it better.
Travel Mediterranean your way
Sail the gorgeous Mediterranean on an unforgettable river cruise. Enjoy views of rolling hills and quaint villages from your ship, explore historical cities, sample local delicacies, and immerse yourself in the local culture.
See all River Cruise toursFor hikers seeking to explore the Balkans' rugged terrain, our most popular trek takes you through the Dinaric Alps where you'll discover wild horses roaming Cincar Mountain's meadows and sleep under star-filled skies. The route includes stays in traditional highland villages like Lukomir, where locals welcome you with strong Bosnian coffee and homemade cheese. Another excellent option covers Montenegro's Durmitor National Park, with routes that wind past glacial lakes and pine forests before climbing to viewpoints over Tara Canyon. Some travelers opt for routes combining Croatia's national parks with Bosnia's peaks, while others prefer focusing on Albania's remote trails through the Accursed Mountains, where you'll traverse the challenging but rewarding Valbona-Theth trail with its snow-capped vistas and valley views.
See all Hiking & Trekking toursOn your Mediterranean adventure, sail the crystalline waters off Santorini’s coast, hike the rugged trails of Cinque Terre, Italy, and taste the fresh seafood in Barcelona's bustling markets. Get lost in the winding streets of Morocco's old medinas, offering a true cultural immersion.
See all Active toursFor cycling enthusiasts, the Balkans offer incredible two-wheeled adventures across Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our most popular route starts in Split and takes you through Brac's olive groves and vineyards before tackling the climbs to Praznica for sweeping Adriatic views. Cyclists particularly enjoy the historic Ciro Trail - an old railway track running from Dubrovnik to Mostar that's been converted into a traffic-free cycling path. Another route explores Montenegro's Bay of Kotor and climbs into the mountains, where one of our customers noted how much they appreciated their guide Igor's local knowledge, especially around Ohrid. These tours include full vehicle support and typically cover 40-55 kilometers daily with plenty of stops at viewpoints and local villages.

Looking at traveler experiences across these companies, Europamundo comes through with solid tour organization and guides who really know how to share local stories and history. The guides are a particular strong point - our customers consistently mention how they make each destination come alive with their knowledge. Intrepid Travel's guides Franco and Meike get lots of positive mentions for creating smooth travel experiences, though some travelers note the accommodations don't always match what they're paying. It's worth knowing this upfront - you get great leadership but might want to check the specific hotels for your route. Choose Balkans has built quite a following thanks to guides like Juli and Ilir. They've earned a reputation for going above and beyond, combining deep local knowledge with genuine care for their groups. When travelers talk about their Balkans trips, these guides often come up as a highlight. G Adventures rounds out the group with varied itineraries that work well for different travel styles. Their CEO (Chief Experience Officer) Freddy gets particular praise in customer feedback for handling everything from logistics to cultural insights. The company seems to have found a good balance between structure and flexibility in their tours. What stands out across all these operators is how much impact the individual guides have on the overall experience. While each company has its own approach to pricing, scheduling and accommodations, it's often the personal touch from leaders like Franco, Juli and Freddy that transforms a standard tour into something special.

"The trip itself was relaxing. I liked that we had stayed in the same hotel at least two nights. Not much time in the bus or train moving from one city to the other. Marco was a great tour guide! He was very pleasant and patient with everybody. He had a lot of information to give us. Overall, I really enjoyed the tour!

"I have a terrible experience with our tour guide in this tour. This is the 1st time that I have a terrible experience with a tour guide. He was incompetent, not knowledgeable with history. On a led orientation walk, He explaination was so confusing and after the sentence, not explaining properly he would say whatever or blahblahblah so I end up googling it myself whereI am not suppose to bec we have tour guide to explain to but no , We were from another country we do not know his country so if we asked him a placeto buy stuff close to the hotel where to go he only say just google it or I don’t know or hewould just shrug his shoulder. And we do not know all details for plan the next day too too confusing. I feel I do not like to go with Intrepid again after this horrible experience

Discover Mediterranean tours for every budget
The Rome to Lisbon coastal route hits the sweet spot between structure and freedom to explore. Our travelers love getting their hands dirty at Barcelona's tapas class run by migrant students, walking between the seaside villages of Cinque Terre and learning Monaco's secrets from locals who know every corner. If you're drawn to the Balkans, the Zagreb to Athens route takes you rafting down the Neretva near Sarajevo and up into Albanian mountain villages to meet shepherd families. You'll get your bearings with orientation walks in each city but there's plenty of time to wander off and find your own favorite spots. The experiences feel authentic and personal - from joining local families for Bosnian BBQ to catching the sunset from a small boat in Kotor Bay.

1,282 tours in MediterraneanOur private Balkan Essentials tour adapts to exactly what you want. One of our recent guests told us how their guide Radenko shared fascinating stories about Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia while perfectly matching their preferred pace. The Venice-Rome-Santorini combo works really well too - you skip the queues at major sites but still have time to discover those quiet neighborhood restaurants and tucked-away piazzas. Our local guides know just where to take you, like the family-run wine cellars at Montenegro's Tvrdoš Monastery or the copper workshops in Mostar where you can try your hand at traditional crafts.

Our 7-day Balkan tours take you through five countries in a week, starting in Sarajevo and winding through Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and also North Macedonia. The route hits some real gems - you'll cross Mostar's old bridge, walk Dubrovnik's city walls and discover quieter spots like Lake Ohrid. We mix guided walks with plenty of free time, so you can join optional wine tastings or just find your own favorite local café. Our travelers especially love the peaceful boat rides and visits to cliff-side Orthodox monasteries - it's a nice balance of well-known sites and places that feel more off the regular tourist path.

Our Spain-Morocco-Andalucia routes are particularly good if you want both European and North African flavors. You'll walk through medieval Caceres, see the amazing detail work in Cordoba's Mosque-Cathedral and hop across the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco's imperial cities. The local guides make a huge difference - our customers always mention how much they learned from guides in Cordoba, Granada and also Toledo. There's a good mix of structured time at major sites and free afternoons to explore historic neighborhoods or catch a flamenco show if you're interested.

Mediterranean tours for couples really shine when combining Spain, Portugal and Morocco over three weeks. Our travelers consistently tell us they love starting in Madrid with tapas dinners, then discovering Porto's wine cellars and taking romantic evening walks through Lisbon's Alfama Quarter. The route through southern Spain includes learning flamenco together in Granada and watching the sunset from Ronda's clifftop viewpoints. In Morocco, couples particularly enjoy the intimate riads in Fez and Marrakech, cooking classes where they learn to make couscous together and tea ceremonies in traditional palace houses. These tours balance guided moments with plenty of free time to wander hand-in-hand through medieval lanes or find quiet cafes in each destination.
The Via Dinarica hiking routes through the Balkans have become a real hit with our younger travelers. You'll trek under starlit skies in Bosnia's Dinaric Alps and climb up to Lukomir village at 1,495 meters where locals welcome you with their strong mountain coffee. The trails take you through Durmitor National Park with views across Montenegro's massive Tara Canyon (1,300 meters deep), plus you can cool off at Albania's Blue Eye spring. We've also got this great Rome to Athens route that mixes culture with outdoor activities - you'll make gelato in Rome's local Trastevere neighborhood, swim at hidden Amalfi beaches and climb 2,917-meter Mount Olympus where ancient Greeks placed their gods.
Our Madrid to Morocco route is perfect for senior travelers because it's well-paced and thoughtful. We use comfortable coaches between cities and pick hotels right in the center so exploring is easy. The daily schedule starts with morning guided walks through historic areas, then leaves afternoons open for museum visits or cafe stops. You get three or four nights in key places like Porto where you can properly explore the wine cellars, or Fez where there's time to watch craftsmen at work in the medina and also visit the Alhambra without rushing. Groups stay small at 16 people which keeps things friendly and manageable, while experienced guides make sure everything runs smoothly between stops.

Best time to visit Mediterranean
- Spring 2025
Spring is perfect for our Balkan routes, especially Split to Dubrovnik where you can trek through Durmitor National Park with its pine forests and glacier lakes. We see lots of travelers picking combined Spain, Portugal and Morocco tours when the weather's mild and crowds are smaller. You get to visit Porto's wine cellars, join cooking classes in Barcelona and walk through Morocco's imperial cities like Fez, where spring festivals add extra life to the medieval streets. The Rome to Amalfi Coast route really comes into its own during spring - the famous coastal road is quieter and local events pop up all through the hillside towns.

- Summer 2025
Summer sees our coastal routes getting busy, particularly the Dubrovnik to Athens journey with swimming stops at Lake Ohrid between visits to North Macedonia's ancient churches and Ottoman buildings. Our hiking tours through Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina work really well in summer - you'll walk the Dinaric Alps, visit remote mountain villages like Lukomir for traditional coffee and cheese and spend nights camping under clear starry skies. The Montenegro section with the Bay of Kotor is perfect for evening boat trips through fjord-like waters. In Greece, the routes often include hikes on Mount Olympus and cooling breaks at the national park's waterfalls.

- Fall / Autumn 2025
Autumn gives us the best conditions for Balkan hiking tours, with routes from Split going through Bosnia's mountains where the trails are quieter and temperatures just right for longer walks. The Spain-Portugal-Morocco combo works really well in fall - our travelers get involved in Porto's wine harvest, explore Seville's Santa Cruz quarter in comfortable weather and discover Morocco's Atlas Mountains when conditions are ideal. Autumn on the Dubrovnik to Athens route is great for seeing Berat's Ottoman architecture, wandering through Skopje's old bazaar and visiting Byzantine churches around Kastoria - the fall colors make these historical places even more interesting.

- Winter 2025 / 2026
Our winter travelers keep choosing the Venice-Rome-Santorini route, starting with local food experiences in Rome's Trastevere district. You'll try regional specialties like truffle spreads and prosciutto, then head down to Naples where you can explore the historic Spanish Quarter. The journey takes you through Matera with its cave houses, past Alberobello's unique trulli homes and over to Greece to see Meteora's monasteries sitting high on natural rock pillars. We've also got a Spain-Morocco connection that's popular in winter - you'll begin in Madrid with morning churros and Habsburg architecture, explore Portugal's port cellars and cross into Morocco where fewer tourists mean you'll get a more personal experience in the medinas and souks.
