What people love about Hiking & Trekking Tours in Atlas Mountains

- Atlas Berber Villages Hike 3 Days & 2 Nights
Took a risk and booked this tour on my own, was obviously apprehensive about going to Morocco on my own but this tour was absolutely amazing and one of the best experiences of my life. My guide Abdul was brilliant, spoke great English and was completely fine to walk at the pace i wanted to and was fine with taking breaks and taking photos for me. He answered all my questions about the Berber people/ way of life and the mountains. The mountains are absolutely beautiful, some of the best views i've ever seen. We also visited the waterfall on the last day which was really cool but did add on an extra 2 hours to the trek (worth it) I have never been so overfed in my life by Hamid the cook! I was served portions for 2 or 3 people with every meal of the nicest Moroccan food imaginable, huge salads, Tagine, cous cous, meatballs and lots of Mint Tea and coffee! The trek itself was easy on the first day but quite challenging for the second and third day, be sure to bring decent walking boots/trainers, some of the terrain is quite tricky and plenty of sleep descents. The accommodation is extremely rustic and simple, be warned there is no toilet or shower in the guesthouse in Tinzert! Bring hand sanitizer or your own soap! The guesthouse in Tizi Oussem is a lot better with a shower and decent toilet facilities. Would definitely do this tour again and strongly thinking about coming back next year to do the Toubkal mountain trek. If i could change one thing it would be to make the first day of trekking longer, we only walked for around 2.5 hours and then had all afternoon and evening with nothing to do in Tinzert.
- Altas Trip and Desert Tour Combined Morocco - 8 days
The tour was split into 2 parts - trekking and the Sahara desert: Trekking - Excellent pick up and driver from my hotel to Imlil where we were greeted at the Riad with tea. To allow me to climb Toubkal with other people the itinerary was swapped around slightly. Day 1&2 - Sabir led us to basecamp then the following morning got up extra early to allow us to get to the summit for sunrise. Then all the way back to Imlil. The food, prepared by Mohammed, was absolutely fantastic and I could not fault a think. Day 3 - 5 - trekking around the villages and valleys again with Sabir as my guide. He did an excellent job of showing me different things and his local knowledge was superb. The muleteer (Ahmed) produced some ok food, but not quite to Mohammed’s standards! I would highly recommend the trekking both in the valleys and the Toubkal climb. Sahara - this was a complete let down and did not match up at all to the itinerary or what was promised. Firstly the driver did not speak any English (the tour promotes an ‘English speaking driver’) and very limited French, meaning we spent hours upon hours in the car not knowing what was happening. We made stops for lunch and were pushed into buying scarves to wear in the desert. The itinerary also gave me the option of a trek - this was not offered, nor could I ask the driver about it. After a very long day of travelling the Riad we stayed in was distinctly average. Air con was an extra 100dhr a night. Breakfast was poor - food and drinks not replenished so those not in first missed out. Again another 8-9 hours in the car stopping at various shopping points to get to the desert. At the desert the driver got lost and spent another hour trying to find the drop off points. Again the itinerary said there would be options for a trek - not offered again. The camel ride was a bit of a gimmick. Walked around for 45mins to the tents which were still in view of our drop off point. Take something to do at night in the desert - there is a lot of sitting and waiting around until dinner! In the morning, the itinerary said we would return by camel. Again this didn’t happen and we were just told to walk to the waiting cars. Another 9 hours in the car back to Marrakesh. The driver spent four of those singing incredibly badly until I had to sign to him to stop. Again he took a wrong turning and I had to redirect him. All in all, I would highly recommend the trekking in the valleys however the Sahara trip was nothing like what was sold to me and a disappointment.
What our customers ask about Hiking & Trekking Tours & Trips in Atlas Mountains
What are the best times of year for hiking in the Atlas Mountains?
The Atlas Mountains present ideal hiking conditions during spring (March-May) and fall (September-October) when daytime temperatures hover around 20-25°C with clear visibility. Summer brings intense heat at lower elevations while winter transforms higher altitudes especially around Mount Toubkal with temperatures plunging to -20°C. A recent traveler remarked "We were blessed with fantastic weather clear blue skies and amazing views of the Atlas Mountains that stretched as far as Marrakech."
What type of accommodation can I expect during Atlas Mountains treks?
Options range from simple mountain shelters to welcoming gites and authentic Berber homes. Riad Bouchahoud in Tijhza provides private rooms while mountain refuges like Les Muflons near Toubkal offer shared dormitories. The luxurious Kasbah du Toubkal overlooks scenic valley landscapes. According to a recent guest: "The gite was basic but adequate and they provide blankets. The food at the gite is fresh and healthy and the hospitality from the Berber people was incredible."
How challenging is the Mount Toubkal trek?
The Mount Toubkal trek requires strong physical fitness with summit day involving 6-8 hours of hiking starting before dawn. Climbers face substantial elevation changes from 2400m to 4167m. Winter climbs need additional technical skills due to snow and ice conditions. One trekker shared: "The summit day was hard work with a 4am start but the views from the top were absolutely incredible - you could see across the Atlas range and all the way to Marrakech on a clear day."
How experienced are the guides in the Atlas Mountains?
The guides primarily Berber locals possess extensive knowledge of the mountain terrain. Their training covers safety first aid and high-altitude trekking with many having led hundreds of Toubkal summits. A recent client shared: "Hassan our guide was excellent - very knowledgeable about the local area culture and mountains. His experience made us feel completely safe even in challenging conditions."
