Your mornings might start paddling traditional canoes, then you'll hike through primary rainforest in the afternoon and go looking for caimans along the riverbanks after dark. Our local guides have an incredible eye for spotting wildlife that most visitors walk right past. There's a great cultural side too - you'll get hands-on with things like making traditional yuca bread alongside Siona community members. Explore consistently delivers great trips in Costa Rica - their local knowledge really shows through in how they structure each day. For wildlife enthusiasts, Nicky Lodge deep in the Cuyabeno Reserve has built up quite a reputation among travelers who appreciate their excellent guides, tasty meals and comfortable rooms that don't sacrifice the authentic Amazon experience. One practical tip that keeps coming up from experienced travelers: while TourRadar makes booking simple, you'll often find better prices by waiting to book directly once you're in Ecuador. The savings can be significant, especially for longer stays or small groups, though you'll need to be a bit more flexible with your dates and planning. The staff at Nicky Lodge really know their stuff - guides can spot wildlife that most visitors would miss completely, and they're great at explaining the complex ecosystem in ways that make sense. The food gets mentioned in nearly every review, with fresh local ingredients prepared in ways that satisfy after long days of exploration. Rooms strike that sweet spot between jungle authenticity and actual comfort, which matters when you're spending several days in the rainforest. Explore's Costa Rica itineraries are well-thought-out, hitting the right mix of highlights and lesser-known spots. They've clearly put in the work to develop relationships with quality local providers, guides and accommodations across their routes.

"Our guide Romulo was amazong, has a lot of knowledge and eager to share with us all the exciting details of the area, animals, plants and the culture. Our accomodation was vers clean, you don’ t really expect that in the forest but they clean the rooms every day. The food was excellent too! Couldn’t really say anything bad but prepare for the 10 hour long bus ride because it was not a pleasure to ride. the roads are really bad the driver was honking like every min.. but it was worth for the tours.

For budget-minded travelers, the Peruvian Amazon and Ecuador's Cuyabeno Reserve offer excellent value. The quick 2-day Tambopata programs pack in real jungle experiences - you'll drift off to sleep with nature's nighttime orchestra and stay in simple, clean lodges that do the job nicely. Our guests love heading out on night river safaris to spot caimans and spending mornings on Monkey Island watching different species move through the trees above. In Ecuador, the 4-5 day Cuyabeno tours deliver more than expected for the price point. You get traditional jungle lodges, guides who grew up in these forests and genuine connections with local communities. The sunset swims in Laguna Grande and learning to make yuca bread alongside Siona families turn these budget-friendly trips into something special.

Small Group
6 tours in RainforestSmall group tours really come into their own in places like Cuyabeno Reserve. With just 8-12 people, everyone can get close to wildlife without disrupting the forest's natural rhythm. Guides have time to point out tiny tree frogs or explain which plants local healers use for medicine. The river boats are perfect - comfortable but compact enough to explore narrow waterways where bigger groups can't venture. Our travelers often mention how they bond with their fellow nature enthusiasts over shared meals and evening talks at the eco-lodges. The guides become more like knowledgeable friends than tour leaders, and many guests stay in touch long after the trip ends.

Demographics
The 5-day Cuyabeno Reserve program works nicely for solo travelers. Everyone sits together for meals and joins group activities, which makes meeting others feel natural. Our individual guests like how each day brings something different - morning wildlife walks, afternoon river trips and nighttime jungle safaris keep things fresh. The jungle lodges are simple but comfy, with common areas where people gather to chat about their wildlife encounters. Many guests tell us they enjoy picking up local skills like making yuca bread with resident families, plus having quiet moments in the hammocks between outings.
Couples often pick our 3-4 day Peruvian Amazon trips for time together in the jungle. The private bungalows by the Madre de Dios River blend comfort with real jungle feel. Our paired guests especially like evening river cruises spotting caimans and capybaras, then having dinner by candlelight with fresh local dishes. Walking through Tambopata Reserve lets couples spot medicinal plants and wildlife side by side, while early morning canoe rides offer quiet moments watching the jungle come alive. Many tell us their favorite parts were swimming in jungle pools or exploring the elevated canopy walkways together high above the forest floor.
The 4-day Amazon programs in Ecuador's Cuyabeno Reserve draw younger adults who want to stay active. These trips mix physical challenges like paddling traditional canoes and night hikes with wildlife spotting. Our younger travelers dig the authentic feel of staying in thatched-roof lodges deep in the jungle, where limited electricity adds to the raw experience. The evening campfires become social spots, with travelers trading stories while jungle sounds fill the air. They get into the mix of cultural elements - learning about healing plants from indigenous guides and visiting local villages - combined with active exploration that keeps energy high.
Our 5-day lodge-based Amazon trips suit senior travelers well, offering solid comfort while keeping the real jungle experience. The schedule includes regular rest stops and flexible activity options. Our older guests connect with guides who share deep knowledge about the ecosystem and local ways of life. Elevated walkways make wildlife watching easier without rough terrain, and motorized canoes provide comfortable access to remote spots. Many like alternating between quiet deck time watching birds and monkeys and gentle guided walks learning about medicinal plants and forest life.
Our Costa Rica rainforest tours hit the mark with families - there's a natural mix of nature and hands-on fun that works really well. Kids love tracking howler monkeys in Tortuguero National Park and watching sea turtles nesting from June through September. The guides are great at catching young imaginations, explaining cool facts like how ants and termites make up 33% of the jungle's living mass. The cooking sessions where children make Costa Rican snacks always get big smiles, and the lodges we pick have pools perfect for cooling off between activities. Our family travelers tell us they enjoy the balance: zip-lining in cloud forests, learning to make cheese in the volcanic highlands and taking boat trips to spot dolphins and whales along the Pacific shoreline.

Costa Rica's rainforests really come alive in summer. The weather lets us do more activities like rafting the Pejibaye River and swimming under jungle waterfalls near Arenal. From June through September, about 5,000 green and leatherback turtles nest at Tortuguero - it's quite a sight. Wildlife encounters stack up nicely; spot howler monkeys at dawn, watch for whales in Corcovado's bays and also search for pacas and tarantulas on night walks. The local connections make these tours special, like when families learn to cook Costa Rican treats together.
