The tour was good. My partner participated in the entire walking part of the tour.(I twisted my ankle but still enjoyed the tour). Pro: places we went, restaurants, day in Funchal. Con: hotels - nicer hotels would add to the trip. The last hotel was under renovations and we ended up in an old room while the rest of our tour group managed to get the updated rooms. Tour radar compensated us for this as the noise level near our room was unbelievable at times. We ended up in a nice room on our last night. Which was great. The first two hotels were ok.

This was my first tour with Overland Tours and I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a 5 star Portugal or Ireland experience. Our tour guide Fuego was the best. We covered so much of the country and all of it's hidden gems you would not see on a large motor coach tour. Hugh is truly passionate about his country. The knowledge he shared with us, his expert guiding and cool sense of humour made for a great first time visit to Portugal.

The itinerary was good. We got to see a lot of Portugal and went on several tours. Some guides were better than others.

Planning a Portugal trip? You should definitely check out Portugal Travel Center's Presidential Train Tour. It's honestly something special. Most people rave about the unique routes they take you on. Now Explore has some really great local guides, especially in places like Madeira. What we love about them though is how their guides really know their stuff and make the whole experience so much better. Wonderful Holidays is super reliable across the board. Their accommodations, food and tours are all top-notch. For active adventures in Portugal, Explore has your back with great guide support, even if those hiking levels don't always match reality.
Planning Your Portugal Trip: Essential First Steps & Starting Points
Most travelers start their Portugal trip in Lisbon. The flight connections are great, and you'll find yourself right in the middle of historic neighborhoods like Alfama and Bairro Alto. If northern Portugal appeals to you more, Porto makes an excellent starting point with its incredible wine cellars and beautiful azulejo tiles covering the buildings. Want something completely different? Fly into Ponta Delgada and dive straight into the wild volcanic landscape of the Azores. Really good itineraries get you to must-see places like Sintra's Pena Palace and Belém's Jerónimos Monastery early in the morning, well before the crowds arrive. You'll want to book everything well in advance, especially if you're looking for good hotels or private drivers.

How Do You Get Around Portugal's Main Cities?
Getting around Portugal is actually really straightforward especially between the big cities like Lisbon and Porto thanks to their excellent train network. The trains are comfortable and you get to see some amazing countryside views along the way. If you're doing the Complete Portugal by Train tour you'll travel through Porto Aveiro and Lisbon and get to see iconic spots like the Ponte Vasco da Gama bridge its really quite something.
What Local Cultural Experiences Can You Join In On?
You've got to experience Fado music while you're in Portugal it's this incredibly soulful traditional performance that really moves you. Lisbon's where it all started and you'll find loads of venues in the old Alfama neighborhood doing nightly shows. In Coimbra it's a bit different more melancholic and often performed by university students in their traditional academic gear. Most tours like the Complete Portugal by Train or Highlights of Portugal include a Fado night its definitely worth experiencing.
Which Local Foods Should You Try and Where?
The food scene here is amazing you've got to try Pastel de nata these incredibly creamy custard tarts that you'll find in pastry shops all over but the ones in Lisbon's Belém district are really special. Then there's Ginjinha this sweet cherry liqueur that comes in a chocolate cup in Lisbon's historic center. If you make it to São Miguel Island in the Azores you need to try Cozido das Furnas its this unique stew that's actually cooked underground using natural heat from the earth. The São Miguel tours usually include tasting this its pretty incredible.
Where Are The Hidden Gems That Tourists Often Miss?
There are some really special places that don't get as many visitors but are absolutely worth seeing. Évora in the Alentejo region is amazing with its Roman ruins and fascinating bone chapel. Coimbra's got one of Europe's oldest universities and this wonderful mix of history and student life. Then there's Piódão tucked away in the mountains with these beautiful slate houses that just blend right into the landscape. The Highlights of Portugal tour takes you there its really quite special.
