Ecuadorian Amazon Tour Reviews
- 5 Days Amazon Lodge Cuyabeno Reserve
Everything about our trip was outstanding. Before our departure, Daniel from Tourradar set the very highest standards by being extremely helpful, professional and friendly in dealing with all our questions and helping us to arrange our trip. During our stay, Romulo and the rest of the team at Nicky Lodge maintained a highly welcoming atmosphere and our stay was both deeply insightful and comfortable.

Travel Amazonian Region Ecuador your way
Deep in the Cuyabeno Reserve, our explorer tours run 4-7 days and really get you into the heart of Amazon life. The small groups move between canoe trips and jungle walks, led by guides who know every bird call and plant use. You'll spot exotic hoatzins and kingfishers in the morning, learn traditional medicine from indigenous experts by afternoon and search for glowing eyes in the darkness during night walks. What our travelers love most is living with Quichua families in wooden riverside huts - it's basic but genuine. You'll join in daily activities like piranha fishing, try your hand at blowgun hunting and take part in traditional shamanic ceremonies. The mix of wildlife watching, cultural exchange and hands-on activities gives you a real feel for life in the Amazon, not just a surface view.

"Our guide Romulo was amazong, has a lot of knowledge and eager to share with us all the exciting details of the area, animals, plants and the culture. Our accomodation was vers clean, you don’ t really expect that in the forest but they clean the rooms every day. The food was excellent too! Couldn’t really say anything bad but prepare for the 10 hour long bus ride because it was not a pleasure to ride. the roads are really bad the driver was honking like every min.. but it was worth for the tours.

Who are you traveling with?
Group
39 tours in Amazonian Region EcuadorOur Amazon group tours usually run with 8-12 people, which works perfectly for being social while still seeing plenty of wildlife. People particularly connect when learning traditional cooking with Siona communities or trying their hand at blowgun demonstrations. The local Quichua families share their daily routines openly, showing visitors medicinal plants, traditional ceremonies and also jungle survival skills. Our customers often mention how having others around makes everything more fun, especially during night walks when everyone helps spot animals.
Small Group
14 tours in Amazonian Region EcuadorWith just 6-8 people, small group tours give you a more intimate Amazon experience. The schedule stays flexible enough to follow wildlife sightings or work around weather changes. Guides can take their time explaining complex ecosystem connections and cultural practices in detail. Having fewer people means you can use narrower trails and approach wildlife quietly, which really helps at parrot clay licks or when tracking monkeys in the canopy.
Private / Personalized
8 tours in Amazonian Region EcuadorPrivate tours let you completely customize your Amazon experience with dedicated guides and flexible schedules. You can adjust the pace based on what interests you most, whether that's taking extra time for wildlife photography, spending more time with indigenous communities or also focusing on specific bird species. Top Amazonian Region Ecuador travel itineraries to fit your plans
A week in the Amazon lets you really get to know both the communities and wildlife. You'll spend nights in traditional wooden huts with Quichua families, learning practical skills like making chocolate from raw cacao and crafting hunting blowguns. The schedule includes time at the amaZOOnico Animal Rescue Centre, shamanic healing sessions and bike rides through local villages. Our guests particularly enjoy the variety - you might spend mornings learning about jungle medicine, afternoons paddling hidden lakes and evenings watching the sunset from observation towers. Some tours focus more on wildlife spots like Genovesa Island, where you'll find Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies and also great frigatebirds. Seven days gives you enough time to settle into the Amazon rhythm while keeping things interesting with a good mix of activities and downtime.

- Spring 2025
Spring brings more active wildlife, and our 5-6 day programs make the most of it. You'll visit parrot clay licks in the early morning where up to 11 different parrot species gather - it's quite a sight. These tours include hands-on experiences like making traditional cassava bread with Tarapuy families, swimming in black water lagoons and also paddling through flooded forests. Our guests particularly value the bilingual guides who really know their stuff; they explain complex ecosystem connections while spotting howler monkeys, toucans, sloths and also giant river otters.

- Summer 2025
Summer conditions are perfect for longer 5-7 day Amazon immersions. The best programs mix stays at well-equipped eco-lodges with visits to community projects focused on sustainability. Each day brings something different - dawn canoe rides for birds and monkeys, afternoon hikes learning about giant ceiba trees and also medicinal plants. The cultural exchange makes these special - you'll join traditional ceremonies, learn jungle survival from local guides and take part in morning wayusa rituals with indigenous families. Night activities range from spotting kinkajous and owls to finding fishing bats.

- Fall / Autumn 2025
Fall means fewer crowds but wildlife viewing stays excellent. Many lodges run 4-6 day programs with visits to 35-meter canopy towers where dozens of bird species fly at eye level. Our travelers love how the days flow - active morning wildlife walks, afternoon cultural activities with local communities and also evening boat rides looking for nocturnal animals. You'll get to fish for piranhas, learn about butterfly life cycles at dedicated farms and also cook traditional dishes using ingredients straight from the jungle. Nicky Lodge gives you solid value for a real Amazon experience in Cuyabeno - our travelers consistently mention the warm staff, well-trained guides and good food. You can often find better rates by booking in Quito rather than through online sites. If you're after something more upscale, La Selva Lodge delivers with unique activities like yoga sessions and piranha fishing (yes, actual fishing for piranhas). The property sits in a beautiful spot and really makes the most of its location. G Adventures runs a good "Local Living" program here, and people generally love how smoothly everything runs. The one downside our solo visitors mention is that you can't get a single room - something to keep in mind if you're traveling alone. Jamu Lodge, which you can book through TourRadar, gets good marks for its comfortable rooms and excellent meals. A few recent guests have had mixed feelings about their guides' involvement and some communication hiccups with staff, but most find it a solid choice for exploring Cuyabeno. The key thing with any Amazon lodge is knowing what you want - whether it's basic but authentic like Nicky, or more refined like La Selva. Both give you real jungle experiences, just with different levels of comfort and different price points.

- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter visits to Amazon focus on top wildlife spots when river levels drop lower. Several lodges around Cuyabeno Reserve run 4-5 day programs mixing canoe safaris with local culture. Our travelers really enjoy those early morning bird sessions - you'll spot prehistoric-looking hoatzins, various parrots and also kingfishers right along the water. The indigenous guides have an incredible eye for spotting monkeys up in the canopy, pink river dolphins in lagoons and they share deep knowledge about medicinal plants their families have used for generations. At night, you'll search for caimans with spotlights and listen to traditional music from local staff.
