Most popular destinations in Australia
The east coast of Australia delivers some really fantastic experiences, with our travelers consistently mentioning Fraser Island and Whitsundays sailing as their top picks. The boat trips are particularly social - you'll spend your days exploring the coastline while making new connections. What works especially well is our basecamp setup, creating natural spaces for meeting other travelers and joining various activities. The longer east coast routes give you time to properly experience local culture and build friendships as you swim at secluded beaches, spot native wildlife and share daily adventures with your group. Between Adelaide and Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road section shows off impressive coastal landscapes where guides share deep knowledge about local history, flora and fauna. For the best conditions, our customers find April through November ideal since you'll avoid the tropical wet season, though southern areas stay nice year-round. The 4WD tours on K'gari (Fraser Island) get lots of mentions - you're actually driving across the world's largest sand island - and the coral reef snorkeling near Cairns lets you get close to vibrant marine life.
See all East Australia toursWestern Australia's natural wonders create genuine adventure through rugged landscapes. The limestone spires of the Pinnacles Desert rise from golden sands like ancient sentinels, while Kalbarri National Park's rust-red gorges are perfect for walks among spring wildflowers. At Ningaloo Reef, you'll swim right alongside whale sharks and manta rays in clear waters, or watch wild dolphins come up to the shore at Monkey Mia. Karijini National Park really stands out for our travelers - you can squeeze through narrow chasms, cool off in hidden pools and get soaked under waterfalls in some of Earth's oldest gorges. Most of our customers say April to October works best, when it's cooler and the wildlife viewing hits its peak, with whale sharks usually showing up from March through July.
See all Western Australia toursThe Great Barrier Reef delivers exactly what our travelers keep raving about - an underwater world that's incredibly alive and active. You'll find yourself swimming right beside colorful schools of tropical fish, watching sea turtles cruise through patches of coral and if timing's on your side, spotting reef sharks going about their day. Over in the Whitsundays, the whole experience comes together as you sail between islands with those classic white sand beaches. The local guides really make these trips special - they know the marine environment inside out and make sure everyone gets comfortable in the water at their own pace. What's particularly cool is how indigenous guides weave in their cultural knowledge, sharing stories about the reef that have been passed down through their families and explaining the delicate relationships between all the marine life.
See all Great Barrier Reef toursQueensland's three natural wonders keep drawing our travelers back year after year. The Great Barrier Reef really delivers - you'll float above coral gardens teeming with life, swim next to sea turtles and spot countless tropical fish. Over on Fraser Island, you're in for a proper adventure with 4x4 vehicles crossing the planet's largest sand island, where you'll drive past old shipwrecks and through patches of ancient rainforest. The Whitsundays complete the trio, especially Whitehaven Beach where the pure silica sand meets crystal-clear turquoise waters - it's exactly what you see in those perfect postcards our customers love sharing. Many of our travelers also join Indigenous-led cultural tours, adding deep meaning to these places through traditional knowledge and stories passed down through generations.

Over on Bruny Island, the Cape Queen Elizabeth and Fluted Capes tracks combine white sand beaches with dramatic cliffs - it's perfect for hikers who want coastal views without extreme difficulty. For exploring Australia's wild places with real insight, Intrepid Travel has built up a solid reputation - their Tasmania hiking guides actually live and breathe the local trails, and they've got proper gear that holds up in all conditions. The food's genuinely excellent too; their camp cooks work magic with local ingredients even in remote spots. If you're keen to meet fellow travelers while seeing the west coast, Nullarbor Traveller has really nailed the social side of group tours. Their Esperance and Margaret River trips create this nice mix where you're exploring pristine beaches, tasting wines and naturally forming friendships that stick. Our travelers often tell us they stay in touch long after the tour ends. Autopia Tours runs a practical Perth to Exmouth route that gives you good value without cutting corners. Their guides know exactly where to spot whale sharks, when to hit the national parks, and they share interesting stories about Aboriginal culture along the way. For first-time visitors looking to dive into Sydney's social scene and coastal highlights, Intro Travel's Oz Intro works well. They help sort out practical stuff like bank accounts and phone plans, then connect you with other solo travelers for nights out in Sydney and adventures up the East Coast. Best places to start your Australia tour
Sydney comes in first for Australian tour departures with 21 regular options, while Melbourne follows with 14 and Adelaide handles 11 departures. Brisbane and also Perth round out the main starting points with 9 and 8 departures throughout the year. Looking at how our customers book, we suggest locking in your dates about 4.5 months ahead (129 days) to get the best picks, especially during busy seasons. Our travelers find Sydney tours work really well between March and May when you can enjoy outdoor sites without the heat, while Melbourne really comes alive during October and November when gardens put on their spring show. For good deals and plenty of choice, think about traveling in April-May or September-October - you'll see fewer tourists but still get that perfect Australian weather.
