Grand Canyon Family Trips/Tours Reviews
- Canyon Country featuring Arizona & Utah (Scottsdale, AZ to Las Vegas, NV) (2024)
We started the trip in Phoenix, just as the US was beginning to adjust to the effects of the Corona Virus. For the first few days, the main indication of the problem was decreased attendance at the national parks we visited. But by the next to last day of the tour, we had to cut the trip short because Las Vegas was effectively closed. The bus driver and the tour director were excellent, making sure that we stayed safe as the outside world started to collapse. A special thank you to the last hotel we stayed in (the Majestic View Lodge in Springdale Utah). The manager, head chef, and staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and to feed us even though just about everything around was closing.
- Las Vegas and Western Deserts – 4 days
Timely planned, intense but feasible tour in truly must-see places. Good quality per price. Skilled and careful trip leaders.
- Grand Canyon and More 3 day tour
I did the 3 day Grand Canyon and more tour over NYE 20/21. It was packed full of fantastic places to go to and see. I was initially concerned it wouldn’t be as good because of covid restrictions but it hardly effected the trip. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and was always happy to help! Would definitely book again.
What our customers ask about Grand Canyon Family Tours & Vacation Packages
What is the best time of year to visit the Grand Canyon with kids?
Families find the most favorable conditions during spring (March-May) and fall (September-October) when temperatures hover between 60-80°F at the South Rim. These seasons provide a sweet spot for outdoor activities without the intense summer heat or winter chill. The South Rim stays open year-round with the Thunderbird Lodge offering convenient family accommodations near major viewpoints. One TourRadar traveler noted "The pace was perfect for our family trip in October with great weather and smaller crowds than summer months." Summer brings intense heat particularly at lower elevations while winter visitors should prepare for snow and cold temperatures.
What are the best family-friendly activities at the Grand Canyon?
Children can explore the canyon through several engaging programs centered around the South Rim. The Junior Ranger program at the Visitor Center gives young adventurers a mission while ranger-led talks at the Human History Museum bring the canyon's story to life. Families often gather at the Desert View Watchtower which combines cultural education with sweeping views. According to a TourRadar traveler "The morning at the Watchtower at the Grand Canyon was magical - ours were the first steps in the overnight snow dusting." The Bright Angel Trail and Mather Point provide safe viewing areas set more than 2000 meters above the Colorado River.
What educational opportunities are available for children at the Grand Canyon?
Young visitors can dive into learning through the Junior Ranger Program which focuses on geology wildlife and conservation. The Visitor Center combines interactive displays with educational films while the Yavapai Geology Museum lets children explore the canyon's formation through hands-on exhibits. Tours such as the Lost Canyons of the Southwest connect children with Native American history at sites like Montezuma Castle and Canyon de Chelly. A TourRadar traveler noted "Our guide made the geological and historical information fascinating for both adults and children."
What types of accommodation options are available for families at the Grand Canyon?
Lodging options span from park-adjacent hotels to in-park lodges that cater to families. The Grand Canyon Railway Hotel in Williams features family suites and a pool while the Thunderbird Lodge provides direct access to rim trails. Yavapai Lodge comes equipped with family rooms featuring refrigerators and microwaves for convenient meal prep. One TourRadar traveler reported "The hotels were clean comfortable and perfect for our family needs." The Maswik Lodge located in Grand Canyon Village offers cafeteria-style dining that works well for families with children.
How accessible are the Grand Canyon trails for families with young children?
The South Rim offers several trails designed with families in mind. The paved Rim Trail welcomes strollers and young walkers with frequent rest stops and viewing areas along the way. From the Visitor Center to Mather Point families can enjoy a manageable 0.7-mile walk on fully accessible paths. A TourRadar traveler confirmed "The hiking and walking paths were well-maintained and our kids had no problem keeping up." During warmer months the Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim serves as a gateway to additional family-friendly paths.
Are helicopter tours suitable for families with young children?
Families with children over age 2 can experience the canyon from above through helicopter tours lasting 45-60 minutes. These flights provide unique photo opportunities though they require careful budget planning with prices ranging from $270-$450 per person. A TourRadar traveler shared "We chose to do the helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon and loved this experience." Weather conditions and availability vary by season so advance booking is recommended.
