What people love about Japan Tours
- 9D Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms)
We had an awesome time with Stunning Tours on our trip to Japan. The tour guide was excellent, and helped us to have the best trip possible.
- 9D Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms)
Fabulous tour! The sites were varied, interesting, and beautiful, and Hiroko was a lovely guide! It felt like we got a great overview of some of Japan's most iconic areas, and it left me both satisfied with our experience and wanting to return asap. One thing to consider is that the last few days in Tokyo aren't really part of the tour unless you're going to pay extra. I didn't, so I had free days then. I was happy with that but that may not be everyone's cup of tea. Otherwise, I'd definitely recommend!
- 9D Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms)
Our Tour Guide Elsie (Hiroko) provided local/historical information on an individual basis as well, which I thought was a good-personal touch to make the overall Tour a great experience. My two adult kids felt comfortable talking with Hiroko upon places to go on our Free-Days. Her recommendations were excellent. The number of places (6) and hotels in the 10day tour was adequate. The bus ride between cities and sites were planned well with enough rest-stops in between. Tokyo Bananas were delicious.

Honshu's real treasures come alive through genuine cultural moments that define Japan's main island. Our guests love getting their hands dirty in sushi-making classes with local masters and discovering regional specialties like the premium Hida beef. The bullet train rides have become much more than transport - they're part of the experience, while nights in Takayama temples let you sleep traditionally on tatami mats. Over in Kyoto's Gion district, you can watch geishas practice their ancient arts, and the quiet bamboo forests of Arashiyama make perfect photo spots. Many visitors find their most meaningful moments at Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park and Museum, learning deeply about Japanese history, before heading to see the floating torii gate at Miyajima's Itsukushima Shrine. Spring brings cherry blossoms while autumn paints everything in rich colors - our travelers often tell us these natural displays changed how they see the world. Winter opens up the north, where you can spot those famous snow monkeys and try local sake tastings, while summer brings lively festivals and really good hiking in the Japanese Alps.
See all Honshu toursThe south of Japan blends old traditions with modern life in really engaging ways. Our Tokyo food tours in Shibuya district are a big hit, where Jane shows visitors around while sharing stories behind each dish they try. Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Shrine draws people in with its thousand vermillion gates winding up the hillside - photographers especially love capturing different angles here. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum offers powerful perspectives on history, while places like Hakone, Mount Koya and Takayama let you discover Japan beyond the main stops. You can choose between quick 8-day city tours or longer 14-day trips that take you into rural areas, mixing guided activities with time to explore on your own. The weather's most reliable from March to May and October to November, but savvy travelers often book January through March for better deals and fewer tourists. Down south, Kyushu and Shikoku really come into their own with authentic hot springs, great cycling routes like the Shimanami Kaido and a meaningful 88-temple pilgrimage path that leaves quite an impression on our visitors.
See all Southern Japan toursSado Island in Central Japan really delivers on authentic cultural experiences, especially around Koninji Temple where you can fully dive into temple life. The setting is naturally gorgeous and what makes it special is how you can genuinely connect with local residents. You've got options for where to rest - from traditional tatami rooms to furnished tents if you want to feel closer to nature. Just make sure to bring insect repellent since the island's rich ecosystem means plenty of buzzing visitors during outdoor activities. Our customers keep telling us how much they love the peaceful temple grounds and real conversations with community members. For the best experience, plan your visit during spring or autumn when the weather is just right and the surroundings look incredible. The intimate tea ceremonies and meditation sessions with local monks tend to be extra special during the quieter months of May and October when there's less tourist traffic.
See all Central Japan toursDive into the cultural core of Japan in Kansai! Wander through Kyoto's historic shrines and temples, savor Osaka's vibrant street food, and chill in Nara's serene parks with friendly deer. Be sure to catch a traditional tea ceremony—it's a must!

The Kumano Kodo trail in Japan really sets itself apart - it's actually one of just two UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage routes in the world, with Spain's Camino de Santiago being the other. Our hikers tell us they love how the path combines physical challenge with spiritual discovery, winding through dense cedar forests and small mountain communities as it connects three major Shinto shrines. The trail ends beautifully at Nachi Taisha next to Japan's highest waterfall. Staying in temples and ryokans along the way adds something special to the experience, and there's nothing quite like soaking in a hot spring bath after a solid day of hiking.
See all Hiking & Trekking toursJapan's active tours blend physical challenges with cultural experiences in really smart ways. The cycling routes through the Noto Peninsula are a favorite among our customers, taking riders past fishing villages on quiet country roads. Some travelers opt for unique activities like Kendo training with teachers who trace their lineage directly to the Samurai, while others prefer walking the old Nakasendo Way trading route between historic post towns. It's this mix of cycling, hiking and traditional martial arts that draws people looking to stay active while learning about Japan's heritage.

If you're weighing up Japan tour options, One Life Adventures has really made a name for themselves with their 10 and 14-day Classic tours. Our travelers consistently tell us they get excellent value - you're not just ticking off temples and shrines, but actually jumping into hands-on experiences like Kendo martial arts and overnight temple stays. The guides know their stuff and handle all the logistics smoothly. For those who prefer more comfort and don't mind spending extra, Intrepid's Premium Japan tour keeps the groups smaller and takes care of every detail. You won't have to puzzle over train schedules or worry about language barriers - it's all sorted for you, plus you get higher-end accommodations and more personal attention from the guides. DragonTrip works well if you're watching your budget but still want to see a lot. They pack quite a bit into their itineraries and use clean, basic hostels. Just know it moves at a quick pace, and you might want proper hiking boots since some travelers mentioned unexpected trail walks. Their groups tend to be younger and ready for active days.
- 4.5 (3,070 Japan reviews)
"First tour guide for the first 8 days was great, second tour guide tried hard and seemed lovely as a person, but she was disorganized, oblivious of who was or wasn’t following her, was unaware of where she was going at times, and just didn’t seem like she knew how to do the job. I’m not the only one who felt that way. Your pre trip support was excellent and accommodating, but having taken a number of tours with other organizations, Rick steve’s in Europe, you charge a lot when offering very little. I will not recommend your tour group to anyone, and will most likely discourage others from taking one.

Best places to start your Japan tour
Tokyo makes the most sense as your jumping-off point - 77 of our recent travelers started there, compared to just 15 from Osaka and 5 from Kyoto. The capital's major airports and extensive rail network make arrival and onward travel simple and straightforward. You'll want to book around 6 months out (177 days specifically) since spots fill quickly, especially for cherry blossom time in late March to early April and fall colors in late November and early December. While spring and fall are popular for mild temperatures and natural beauty, winter brings unique experiences like snow festivals and onsen soaking, and summer lights up with festivals and fireworks. Our travelers consistently say getting a Japan Rail Pass before arriving and downloading some good transit apps makes a huge difference in navigating Japan's transportation system.
Discover Japan tours for every budget
Looking for great value in Japan? Several well-rated tours keep costs smart while showing you the best bits. There's a really practical 8-day route that connects Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka by rail - Japan's trains are just brilliant for getting around. You'll tick off the major spots like the thousand gates at Fushimi Inari and get time to wander Dotonbori's food lanes, plus plenty of free hours to explore on your own. Our Tokyo customers particularly love the Shibuya food walks, where local guides take you to authentic spots you'd never stumble across alone. Some tours throw in useful extras like airport pickups and bus passes, though meals are often up to you - which means you can manage your budget and pick exactly what you fancy eating. The hotels are basic but clean, and they're usually near train stations so you can pop out exploring easily.
Want to take things up a notch? The premium tours run 10-14 days and really get into the heart of Japan. You'll stay at carefully picked ryokans - like the Susukinohara Ichinoyu where your private outdoor onsen bath looks right over the forest hills. The cultural access is pretty special too; you can chat with monks about Zen Buddhism at Daitokuji Temple, take part in proper tea ceremonies and get insider access to Kyoto's geisha areas. The scheduling works really well - you'll beat the crowds at temples with early morning visits, then maybe end up in a local izakaya that your guide knows well. Getting around is smooth with first-class rail tickets and private coaches when you need them. What makes these tours special isn't just seeing Japan - it's actually experiencing those centuries-old traditions in real, authentic settings.

Most guests on our small-group Japan tours are actually traveling solo, making it easy to connect with others exploring Japan alone. The 9-13 day routes through Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka use centrally located hostels and hotels in safe areas, perfect for evening walks and late-night exploring. The schedule really works - group temple visits in the morning, then total freedom to discover hidden ramen spots or wander the backstreets. Dragon Trip tours mix tradition with social time - you'll practice meditation and calligraphy, then spend evenings at local izakayas with your group. You share authentic experiences like ryokan stays and onsen baths while keeping plenty of independent time.
Couples often pick our mid-range tours for a mix of comfort and local experiences. The 6-9 day journeys include private rooms in well-placed 3-star hotels, giving you space to blend group activities with romantic evening walks through lantern-lit streets. Many pairs love cycling together through Hiroshima's Peace Park or walking Kyoto's Gion district at dusk to spot geiko hurrying to their appointments. Independent tours work really well - we handle hotels and transport while you decide how to spend each day, maybe finding local restaurants or visiting temples early before the crowds and also tour groups arrive.
Young adults choose our active tours that mix cultural sites with social time. The 9-13 day routes use clean hostels and hotels where you meet other travelers, plus include nights out like karaoke in Osaka's neon districts. You'll learn meditation from Buddhist monks and stay in mountain temples, then switch it up by go-karting through Tokyo dressed as video game characters. One Life Adventures tours pack in hands-on activities like sushi-making and samurai experiences, while leaving free time to explore with new friends from your group.
Our senior travelers love how the Golden Route tours take a relaxed approach to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. The 9-10 day journeys use comfortable hotels near train stations and give proper time in each city without rushing. We handle all the details - hotel check-ins, bullet train tickets and daily logistics - while keeping things flexible so you can skip activities if you want. The tours plan carefully around temple visits and cultural sites, with taxi options instead of walking when needed. Seniors particularly enjoy structured morning activities followed by free afternoons to watch local life in traditional gardens or find quiet and also authentic restaurants.
Our family tours blend cultural activities that kids actually enjoy with enough downtime to keep everyone happy. Parents tell us they love how their children light up during sushi-making classes in Tokyo and get excited about feeding the bowing deer in Nara Park - the deer really do bow back when offered crackers! The 12-day routes use spacious 3-star hotels where families can spread out, and Japan Rail passes make traveling between cities smooth and simple. The morning activities give structure to the day, while free afternoons let families explore at their own pace. The Golden Route connecting Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka works perfectly with kids - they get time to settle in each city while hitting spots like the Robot Restaurant and the Ghibli Museum that children really connect with.
