Where is Oberammergau?
Oberammergau is located in Bavaria, in the south of Germany, almost halfway between Munich (Germany) and Innsbruck (Austria). The village is nestled among the Alps, surrounded by forests, lakes, and nature preserves.
What is the Oberammergau Passion Play about?
The Oberammergau Passion Play tells the Passion of Jesus (the last days in the life of Jesus), from coming to Jerusalem to his crucifixion. The play consists of 12 scenes and each scene is preceded by the choir, with music by local composer Rochus Dedler, who composed the music for the play in the early 1800s.
How long is the play?
The play is 5 hours long and is performed in two parts:
Part one is performed from 2.30 pm to 5 pm
Break between 5 pm and 8 pm
Part two is performed from 8 pm to 10.30 pmWho performs in the play?
The play is performed exclusively by the villagers, with a few exceptions. To take part, one must have been born and raised in Oberammergau or have lived in the village for at least 20 years. Christian Stückl, the director of the Oberammergau Passion Play, has called for these rules to be loosened so that others could take part in the play. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a change in the cast in 2030!
What language is the play performed in?
The play is performed in German and there are no surtitles. However, you can buy textbooks in various languages. You will still be able to enjoy the performance even if you don’t speak German; the captivating storytelling, the stunning visuals, and the beautiful music are bound to dazzle everyone in the audience.

How to Get There
By Car
From Munich, Germany: Follow the A-95, exit at Murnau, then continue in the direction of Oberammergau. You can also follow the A-95 until Eschenlohe and then head to Oberammergau via Oberau. The drive takes between 1 and 1.5 hours.
From Innsbruck, Austria: Go in the direction of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, then follow the A-95 in the direction of Munich until you reach Oberau, and from there continue to Oberammergau. The drive takes around 1.5 hours.By Train and Bus
From Munich, Germany: Take the train to Murnau from the Central Station in Munich. In Murnau, change to the regional bus to Oberammergau which leaves at the train station. The journey takes around 2 hours.
From Innsbruck, Austria: The public transport options to Oberammergau from Innsbruck are a bit tricky and can take up to 4 hours. Take the train to Munich Central Station and then follow the instructions mentioned above.Flying
The closest and most well-connected international airport to Oberammergau is Munich Airport, located to the north of the city. It takes about 40 minutes to get from the airport to the center of Munich, and from there, it’s up to you whether you want to go to Oberammergau by car or public transport.
Where to Stay
Staying in Oberammergau is the best option if you want to stay close to the venue and experience a traditional alpine village. However, please note that the play draws around 500,000 visitors from May to October, so the usually quiet little village turns into a bustling place for six months.
Consider staying in Munich or Innsbruck. Both cities are worth a visit and are within driving distance from Oberammergau.Tips
