2 Week Itinerary ideas to Sri Lanka

We've put together the top Itineraries for a 2 week stay in Sri Lanka. Get ready for a once in a lifetime adventure as you explore the country's rich culture, extensive variety of cuisine, exciting activities and majestic temples.

ITINERARY 1

Sigiriya Rock (1 day) - Put on your hiking shoes, grab your camera and head out to climb the incredible Sigiriya Rock. Protruding proudly out of the earth, ruins of a grand palace provide evidence of a once violent and noble history.

Kandy (2 days) - Visit a spice garden to learn about where our favourite spices come from. Then traverse the hills that provide a stunning view of the artificial but now notoriously beautiful Kandy Lake. In the afternoon, enjoy a cooking class and learn the secret to a perfect Sri Lankan curry.

Ella (2 days) - Ella plays host to some of the best Ayurveda massage parlours in Sri Lanka. A thousand-year-old technique which removes any aches or pains you may have, it's the perfect way to relax. Next, explore the hidden gems of Ella, such as the 9 Arch Bridge, Ella Gap and then hike up Little Adams peak for sunset.

Uda Walawe National Park (1 day) - Go on a safari, searching the wilderness for herds of elephants, buffalo, crocodiles, monkeys, eagles, hawks, peacocks, mongoose and if you're lucky, leopards. Truly a once in a lifetime experience, your day in the national park will be a tough one to beat.

Mirissa (1 day) - Arrive at the stunning beachside town of Mirissa. A place where the world class waves hit the sand, where turtles inhabit the water, and where the beer is ice cold.

Colombo (2 days) - Visit the national museum or art gallery close by, or take a tuk-tuk and run around the manic streets of the Pattah Markets for some final souvenir shopping.

ITINERARY 2

Anuradhapura (2 days) - Visit Mihintale, the sacred birthplace of Sri Lankan Buddhism and go on a guided bicycle tour of the city. The ruins themselves are spread over a large area, some in woodland settings and others appearing park-like with columns and ponds dotted about.

Polonnaruwa (1 day) - Travel on to Polonnaruwa, the capital of the Indian Chola Dynasty after Anuradhapura was conquered in the late 10th century. A likely highlight will be the massive stone Buddhas: 14-metre-high granite carvings of the iconic reclining Buddha which represent the zenith of Sinhalese rock carving.

Dambulla (1 day) - Explore the amazing Dambulla Cave Temples which are located high on a stone cliff face, with numerous steps to enter.

Kandy (2 days) - In Kandy, visit the Dalada Maligawa (aka Temple of the Tooth), Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist site, and mingle with the white-clad pilgrims who come here to worship.

Bandarawela (1 day) - Visit a local home for a cooking demonstration to learn some secrets of traditional Sri Lankan cuisine.

Mirissa (2 days) - Enjoy a day of beach splendour in Mirissa. The beach itself is a long curve of sand with lovely clear waters for swimming – a great spot to watch the sunset. Consider taking a bicycle ride or tuk-tuk to nearby Weligama, where colourful fishing boats bring fresh fish to sell along the shore or 'bikesplore' the lesser-known areas of nearby Galle.

ITINERARY

Sinharaja (2 days) -  Sinharaja is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to do bird watching and butterflies observation.

Uda Walawe National Park (3 days) - This park has an amazing array of animal and birdlife, with more herds of wild elephant than anywhere else in Sri Lanka. Discover how this majestic creature has been part of Sri Lankan culture for centuries during a visit to the nearby Elephant Transit Home. Run by the Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife Conservation, ETH provides shelter for orphaned or abandoned baby elephants with the aim of releasing them into the wild.

Yala National Park (2 days) - This national park is widely known for the various species of Sri Lankan birdlife that reside or migrate here. The park itself is noteworthy for its waterbirds as every single species is said to visit here.

Kosgoda (1 day) - Popular for its turtle hatchery, you can see turtles in their natural habitat and you may even get to see turtles laying eggs in the evening hours. The Turtle Conservation Project is the only place where turtles are not held in captivity and therefore we strongly recommend that you visit this location instead of other hatcheries.
