Itinerary ideas for 10 day long Thailand trips

Known for its great food, beaches, and enchanting temples, Thailand is perfect for first-time travellers, adventure-seeking travellers and everyone in search for authentic memorable experiences. To help you plan your own perfect trip, we’ve picked two of the best 10 day itineraries to Thailand, one of Asia’s most visited countries.

ITINERARY 1

Bangkok (3 days) - Visit the Royal Grand Palace, a great architectural masterpiece. Comprised of several buildings, the palace itself was used as a royal residence between the 18th century to the mid-20th century. End the day watching the sunset at any of the stylish rooftop bars which have blossomed in the city’s skyscrapers in recent years

Ayutthaya (1 day) - Head to the former capital of Ayutthaya to see the impressive ruins of this once-vast island city, which was mostly destroyed by an invading army 250 years ago. Today, the haunting ruins hint at its former glories as can be seen in the beautiful temples like Wat Yai Chaimongkhon, Wat Phanan Choeng and Wat Mahathat, the place where the roots of trees have devoured the head of a Buddha. Hop on a traditional long-tail boat and enjoy a scenic cruise around the island to see the city’s ruins from a different perspective

Lampang (1 day) - Visit Wat Phra That Lampang Luang. This large Lanna-style temple is prominently located on a hill, surrounded by impressive walls. Climb the Naga staircase and explore the mesmerising complex that boasts seven buildings and a sacred tree.

Chiang Mai (3 days) - Commonly known as the ‘Rose of the North’, explore the city at your own pace or spoil yourself with a relaxing Thai massage. Then visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of the most revered temples in the country. This sacred location is at the top of a mountain from where you can appreciate stunning panoramic views of the city.

Sukhothai (2 days) - This historic city is famed for the troops of macaques that roam the streets as if they were the jungle. Visit the ruins of the ancient Khmer temple of Phra Prang Sam Yot and the adjacent Brahman shrine of San Phra Kan, known as the ‘Monkey Temple.’

ITINERARY 2

Bangkok (2 days) - Get a real taste of Bangkok with a walking food tour before finishing the afternoon racing around the crazy streets by tuk tuk. Head out in the evening for dinner and drinks at one of the many popular spots in the city.

Khao Sok National Park (2 days) - Discover the incredible hidden gem, Khao Sok National Park. Kayak around or relax in a tube with a beer on the turquoise waters of Cheow Lan Lake, surrounded by the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world.

Beaches in the south of Thailand (2 days) - Say goodbye to the jungle and hello to the white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters of southern Thailand. You should spend the afternoon chilling by the pool before climbing to the famous Tiger Cave Temple, home to the families of monkeys joining you at the summit to take in the incredible views.

Krabi (2 days) - Krabi is home to some of the most incredible beaches in the world. Take a longtail boat to the famous Railay Beach, home to towering limestone cliffs and white sandy beaches.

Phi Phi Island (2 days) - When you think of Thailand you think island life, sunsets, beach bars and fire shows... Well, guess what? Phi Phi has it all! Go snorkelling in crystal clear waters, explore secluded lagoons, and take time to check out the Viking caves.

Explore Northern Thailand in 10 days

Northern Thailand is known for its thickly forested mountains inhabited by several hill tribes, each with its own language and culture. Visit the spectacular Wat Phra Kaew temple in Chiang Rai to Uttaradit’s Ton Sak Yai National Park and you will surely have a great time!

ITINERARY 1

Bangkok (3 days) - Bangkok has so much to offer those with time to explore, so perhaps arrive a day or two earlier. Take a riverboat to Chinatown and explore the crowded streets, uncover the magnificent Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, wander down the tourist mecca of Khao San Road, or indulge in a Thai massage.

Sukhothai (2 days) - Located on a fertile plain, Sukhothai was established in the 13th century, and the name means the 'Dawn of Happiness'. It’s now famous for its World Heritage-listed historic park that celebrates the Golden Age of Thai civilisation.

Lampang (1 day) - Visit the Friends of the Asian Elephant located in Lampang. This is the first elephant hospital in the world established to care for sick and abused elephants, with the aim of preserving the animals' natural habitat and lifestyle. You’ll learn more about this important initiative and perhaps become acquainted with some of its resident pachyderm patients.

Chiang Mai (3 days) - Perhaps explore the famous temple complex of Doi Suthep. Drive along a scenic, winding mountain road that ends at an impressive 300-step naga-guarded stairway. The rewards justify the climb with one of the most beautiful temples in Thailand on display. You could also join an early morning Chiang Mai tour that puts you at the epicentre of Buddhist rituals. Learn to meditate, offer alms to monks, and make an offering at a temple. Or maybe wander markets, meet monks, cruise the river, and slurp noodles on a Mae Ping River Experience.

ITINERARY 2

Bangkok (2 days) - Once you’ve hit Khao San Road, you’re officially on holiday. Take a riverboat to Chinatown and explore the crowded streets, or head to the magnificent Grand Palace. Our pick for cocktails is Bed Supper Club or Vertigo.

Sukhothai (1 day) - Head out on a guided cycle tour of Sukhothai’s Historical Park and World Heritage-listed ancient city. Roll your bike around the temples and other archaeological relics within the area.

Chiang Mai (2 days) - With over 120 temples in the city centre alone, you can easily while away a few hours doing a temple run. If you’re all templed out, perhaps indulge in a Thai massage or hit up the Night Bazaar and get haggling.

Doi Mae Salong (2 days) - Doi Mae Salong is a seriously good-looking tea plantation way up in the hills of the Golden Triangle. Not only are the views incredible, you’ll also get to meet some seriously lovely hill-tribe villagers as you wander.

Chiang Rai (2 days) - While the Golden Triangle may have gained a little unwanted notoriety in the 1920s for its opium trade, today it remains a lush, mountainous, traditional intersection of Northern Thailand, Laos and Burma. In the morning take a three-hour ride in a minivan to this famous border. Pay a visit to the House of Opium Museum for a deeper insight into this area's problematic past.

Itinerary for a 10 day trip to Southern Thailand

If you’re heading on a trip around Thailand, the country's southern region should be at the top of your list; this is where you’ll find the picturesque tropical beaches and islands. Here is an example itinerary to help you plan your adventure to the islands in the Ko Tarutao archipelago, as well as the Trang islands in Southern Thailand.

ITINERARY 1

Bangkok (2 days) - Bangkok is a huge, buzzing city. Make the most of the city's bustling markets, grab some spicy noodles from a street cart or relax with a Thai massage.

Ko Samui (2 days) - The island of Koh Samui has been a tourist hotspot for decades, and with good reason. Swim, snorkel or relax in the waters at Na Muang. Take a trip around the island, visiting the 15-metre-tall Big Buddha and then feast on a delicious curry in the evening.

Khao Sok National Park (2 days) - The park is the wettest spot in Thailand with some of the oldest jungles in the world. See loads of amazing limestone rock faces and, if you're lucky, monkeys playing here and there and an occasional tiger deep inside the park.

Ao Nang Beach (4 days) - Swim, kayak, or snorkel in the clear water, relax on the sand with a book and sip a cocktail as the sun goes down. Perhaps unwind with a massage or cook up something delicious in a Thai cooking class. Take a tour out to some of Krabi's naturally-formed crystal pools and hot springs, swimming in the clear waters of the Emerald Lagoon while fish nibble at your toes. You might like to take a trip out to the quiet, pristine island of Koh Hong, where you can snorkel in the shallow reefs and kayak past cliffs to a hidden salt-water lagoon.
