ITINERARY 1

ITINERARY 2

Thingvellir - Head to the UNESCO World Heritage site Thingvellir National Park where the world’s oldest parliament met on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake. Continue through farmland areas to the geothermal fields of Geysir with bubbling mud pools and the high-spouting Strokkur hot spring.

Vatnajokull National Park - Enter the southern area of Vatnajokull National Park, named after Europe’s largest glacier. This national park is also the largest one in Western Europe, and the total park area covers almost 14% of Iceland. 

Hveragerdi - Visit the village of Hveragerdi, which is one of the few sites in the world located directly in the middle of a geothermal area.

Blue Lagoon - Enjoy a dip in the famous Blue Lagoon, a unique wonder of nature with pleasantly warm, mineral-rich water in the middle of a black lava field.

7 day winter Iceland travel ideas

Reykjavík (2 days) - Explore the city by walking along the shopping streets Laugavegur and Skolavordustigur, which is a great way to capture the essence of Reykjavik. Relax in the thermal swimming pools or visit the National Gallery of Iceland to get your art fix. 

Pingvellir (1 day) - Visit the famous Golden Circle attractions. Start the day at Thingvellir National Park, an incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site with geological, historical and cultural significance. The historic Icelandic Parliament was founded here in 930 CE/AD, and is the oldest existing democratic parliament in the world.

East Fjords (1 day) - Head to Iceland's sensational East Fjords. You will travel the narrow roads which thread their way between the mountains and the ocean, passing through the very remote peninsular of Hvalnes. 

Dettifoss (1 day) - Begin your day at Dettifoss waterfall, which boasts the most powerful flow rate in Europe. The roaring torrent is truly breathtaking and you'll be left humbled by the power of Icelandic nature. Then visit Lake Mvatn before relaxing at the Mvatn Nature Baths. 

Reykholt (1 day) - Explore Reykholt, home to the famous Icelandic saga writer, historian, lawyer, and poet, Snorri Sturluson.

7 day summer Ring Road adventure ideas

Summer is a great time to visit Iceland because you enjoy various outdoor activities in mild temperatures. Experience a trip around Iceland’s famous Ring Road, hike to various waterfalls and experience the midnight sun. Here are some itinerary options that will cover all the country's most popular places.

ITINERARY 1

Golden Circle (1 day) - Jump out of bed and get ready to follow Iceland’s Golden Circle for a day of smooth scenic drives. Arrive at Thingvellir National Park and the Parliament Plains. This is the site of Europe's oldest parliament, founded in AD930.

Hvolsvollur Valley (1 day) - Lend a hand with the Hvolsvollur tree planting project in Hvolsvollur Valley. Since the arrival of the first settlers to Iceland, deforestation has taken place in order to make space for pastures. With this in mind, the owners of the campsite had the idea to start a tree-planting project on their land to contribute to lowering CO2 and counteract soil erosion. Do your bit for the environment and get your hands dirty as you plant your own tree in the surrounding hills.

Thorsmork (1 day) - Disappear into the green and black hills of Thorsmork (Thor’s Valley) by public 4x4 bus, crossing many fast-flowing rivers on your way. This nature reserve is a favourite with walkers and once you see the waterways below, it’ll be pretty obvious why people keep coming back.

Jokulsarlon (1 day) - Head to the famous glacial lagoon of Jokulsarlon where there’s the option of jumping on a boat to sail around the huge icebergs.

Solheimasandur (1 day) - Visit the wreckage of the plane that still sits on the Solheimasandur Beach.


ITINERARY 2

Snæfellsnes (1 day) - Rich fertile farmland and rugged cliffs greet you on your morning drive along the beautiful coastal road to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. See the Snæfellsjökull Volcano, which can be spotted from Reykjavík on clear days, as well as the glacier that covers its summit. 

Eiríksstaðir (1 day) - At Eiríksstaðir, you can visit a replica of Norwegian Viking Erik the Red’s ancient sod-roofed homestead, where his son Leifur Eiríksson (explorer Leif Erikson) was born.

Goðafoss (1 day) - You first stop in the morning should be Goðafoss, the “Waterfall of the Gods.” Next, follow the shores of Mývatn Lake for vistas of the splendid volcano, peaceful wetlands, and abundant wildlife.

Reykholt (1 day) - Next up is the tiny hamlet of Reykholt, former home of medieval Icelandic poet, historian, and politician Snorri Sturluson. 

Thingvellir (1 day) - Some of Iceland’s most spectacular sights are on the agenda today as you visit Thingvellir National Park, a rift valley and boundary between the North American and Eurasian continental plates.
