Our top itinerary for 10 days in Norway

Day 1 & 2 - Oslo - Get a proper introduction to Oslo, the country’s hub of trade and industry. Visit the National Theater, the unique Storting building, and the Royal Palace. Stroll through Frogner Park, known for Gustav Vigeland's magnificent sculptures and then visit the City Hall where the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held.

Day 3 - Heddal and Vemork - Visit Heddal Stave Church, one of the largest remaining medieval wooden churches in Norway. Then head to Vemork, the scene of the sabotage action from The Heroes of Telemark. Learn all about the events of 1943 and gain an insight into the technology of hydroelectric power generation, one of the pillars of Norway’s economy.

Day 4 - Låtefoss - Marvel at the unique Låtefoss twin-waterfall, then drive through the orchards along Sørfjord and cross Hardangerfjord by ferry.

Day 5 - Bergen and Voss - Explore the narrow lanes of ancient Bryggen and discover the colourful Bergen fish market. Later, travel toward the popular lakeside resort of Voss, where you can enjoy the Flåm train journey.

Day 6 - Sognefjord, Nærøyfjord and Fjaerland - Start the day with a cruise on spectacular Sognefjord and Nærøyfjord. Next, visit the Norwegian Glacier Museum in Fjaerland. Then marvel at Bøyabreen, one of the branches that radiate from Jostedal Glacier into the surrounding valleys.

Day 7 - Loen - Prepare for the spectacular Loen Skylift an aerial tramway that brings you from the fjord to the top of Mount Hoven in just minutes. Enjoy the breathtaking views of Lake Lovatnet, Mount Skåla, Jostedal Glacier, and the Nordfjord and discover the hiking trails.

Day 8 - Geirangerfjord - Dalsnibba - Embark for a leisurely cruise on Geirangerfjord past the famous Seven Sisters waterfall. Then, climb above the tree line for panoramic views from the Geiranger Skywalk, Mount Dalsnibba’s platform above the fjord.

Day 9: Lillehammer, Eidsvoll, and Oslo - Start your day in Lillehammer, the host of the 1994 Winter Olympics, with a stop at the Olympic ski jump, followed by a walking tour of the unique Maihaugen Open-Air Museum to learn more about Norway’s culture and history. Enjoy a drive along lovely Lake Mjøsa to Eidsvoll, where the country’s democratic constitution was signed in 1814, before returning to Oslo.

10 day Norwegian Fjords itinerary

Day 1 & 2 - Oslo - See as much of this charming and eccentric city as possible. Start with the National Gallery of Art to admire Edvard Munch’s famous painting, The Scream. The following day, travel to nearby Holmenkollen and visit the Ski Museum, housed inside the famous monumental Holmenkollbakken (ski jump), which looks more like a work of art than a sports venue. Alternatively, go island hopping on Oslofjord and visit the Viking Museum, browse the harbour-front Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, taste local flavours at the food hall Vulkan, explore the immense Akershus Castle & Fortress, or check out the shops in the Grunerløkka district.

Day 3 & 4 - Trondheim - Trondheim was the first capital of Norway and the name translates as 'a good place to live'. The city is situated on the Trondheimsfjord and colourful wooden storehouses flank the Nidelva River that runs through town, while the city's outskirts are surrounded by hilly wilderness. A must-see is the Nidaros Cathedral, built from 1070 on, which remains the northernmost Gothic structure in Europe. Explore the city on foot and enjoy the cafes and the Nordre Gate pedestrian-only area. Head to the station at the end of the second day for the overnight train to Bodø.

Day 5 - Bodø - Wake up just north of the Arctic Circle as the train pulls into the town of Bodø in the morning. The modern city was essentially destroyed by German bombers during WWII. With a dramatic backdrop of rugged ranges, Bodø has the densest population of white-tailed sea eagles in the world, so why not grab a drink or some food by the quay and take in the atmosphere while the birds circle above.

Day 6 & 7 - Lofoten Islands - Known for picturesque fishing villages, pristine nature and, the Midnight Sun, the beauty of the area is impossible to convey in words. In the morning head out on an excursion by RIB (rigid inflatable boat) to the narrow and steep-sided Trollfjord and go around the small islands and skerries of the Raftsundet Strait. In the afternoon, why not enjoy a sea kayaking trip around Svolvaer's picture-perfect harbour or hike through the dramatic granite peaks jutting out of the ocean.

Day 8 & 9 - Tromsø - Located far above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is northern Norway's major cultural hub thanks to music and arts festivals and an increasing student population. Learn about the region's fascinating history at the Polar Museum and Tromsø Museum, check out the many art galleries or perhaps take a boat cruise in the surrounding waters. End the day with a beer at the city's oldest pub, Olhallen, part of the Mack Brewery that is even older than the pub.
