Questions and Answers
What is an Altitude Sickness?
Altitude sickness arises from the body’s response to high elevations and is characterized by hypoxia (insufficient oxygen in the blood, brain, or tissues), fluid accumulation in the lungs or brain, and cold and dehydration. To alleviate symptoms, descend to a lower altitude, keep warm, and maintain hydration, avoiding alcohol during hikes.
What are the causes of Altitude Sickness?
At sea level, dry air has 20.9% oxygen. As altitude increases, air density lowers, reducing available oxygen. At 5,500 meters, oxygen is about 50% of sea level, and only 30% at Everest’s peak. The body can adapt, but altitude sickness often begins above 2,500 meters. It’s best to ascend no more than 300 meters per day above 3,000 meters and to “climb high, sleep low.” Gradual acclimatization is key, especially for those starting quickly. Rest days at 3,000 and 4,000 meters support safe adaptation.
How to prevent altitude sickness?
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, which helps your body cope with the altitude.
- Slow and Steady: Maintain a steady, comfortable pace. Avoid rushing, even if you feel strong.
- Medication: Consider taking Diamox (acetazolamide) to help prevent AMS. Consult with your doctor before the trek.
- Awareness: Be aware of AMS symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, and fatigue. If symptoms worsen, descend immediately and seek medical help.
Acclimatization Days
Some of our itineraries do not include acclimatization days, which are typically built into the standard trek to help your body adjust to the high altitudes. Due to the fast-paced schedule, trekkers must be aware of the symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and take preventive measures. What are the physical requirements to join the trek?
Cardiovascular Endurance: Trekkers need strong cardiovascular fitness, with regular cardio exercises like running, cycling, or swimming to build endurance.
Strength Training: Focus on legs, core, and upper body strength using exercises like squats, lunges, and planks.
Hiking Experience: Prior hiking experience, especially at altitude, is recommended. Practice with a loaded backpack if possible.
Mental Preparation: The trek is physically and mentally demanding. Be prepared. How can I complete the trek successfully?
Preparation: Train at least 3-6 months before the trek with cardio, strength, and long hikes.
Gear: Pack quality gear, like trekking boots, warm layers, a good sleeping bag, and a fitting backpack.
Hydration & Nutrition: Stay hydrated, eat well, and carry energy snacks like nuts and dried fruit.
Listen to Your Body: If you experience severe altitude symptoms, prioritize health by descending.
Guidance: Trek with experienced guides who know the route and can support safety at high altitudes.Extra Days for Domestic Flights
Mountain’s weather is notoriously unpredictable, which can lead to flight delays or cancellations. To accommodate this, we strongly recommend allocating at least three extra days to your overall trip schedule. This will ensure you have flexibility in case of any unforeseen delays.
Lukla flight from Manthali Airport, Ramechhap:
Due to the air traffic in Kathmandu during the peak months (March, April, May, September, October, and November), Civil Aviation Authorities of Nepal (CAAN) has promulgated the notice that the flight has been shifted to Manthali from Kathmandu to Lukla. If there are changes will update you ASAP.
Lukla Flights
The Lukla flight is sensitive in case of weather and it may be instantly delayed or canceled, as a tiny Himalayan airport has difficulty facing heavy traffic. So, we suggest, trekking in Everest, please make sure at least you have two days additional in the program. In the case of a cancellation, the best alternative to get Lukla is to charter a helicopter as it can fly in a lower visibility of 1,500 meters. However, Twin Otter and Dornier aircraft need minimum visibility of 5,000 meters.
What about the Helicopter cost? Is it getting instant or need to be in the queue?
A helicopter charges US $ 2500 per flight to Lukla from Kathmandu. And the US $ 600 per person on a sharing basis. Except for the emergency, during the high season and extreme weather of Lukla, you may not get a helicopter instantly or need to be in the queue. Also, if you have requested the Helicopter for less than 24 hours, you may need to wait because of the limited number of helicopters, and they’re using various activities in the mountains.
Health and Safety Guidelines
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol.
- Nutrition: Eat well-balanced meals to maintain your energy levels.
- Hygiene: Hand sanitizer and wet wipes are essential, as facilities may be basic.
Weather and Climate
Expect cold temperatures, especially at night, with potential snow at higher elevations. Dress in layers to manage your body temperature effectively.
Accommodation and Meals
You will stay in teahouses along the route, which provide basic but comfortable lodging. Meals will typically include Nepali and Tibetan dishes, with some Western options. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions in advance.
