- AAndrew· July 1st, 2023Visit to the the lalomitei caves. Piatra Craiulu1. The walking is rated as ‘moderate and challenging’. I am a fit 63 year old, I run and hillwalk regularly: overall, I rate it unequivocally as challenging. The length of the walks indicated in the itinerary (4-6 hrs) was usually an underestimate by 2 hrs. This was not a reflection on the pace of our group – I can’t imagine another group managing a quicker pace. Some of the group would have preferred a slightly slower pace, not primarily because of fitness, but in order to better appreciate the superb landscapes. This was not on offer. 2. One of the walks involves descending 300m on a continual, steep scree. It would have been very difficult without using at least one walking pole – I think this should be made clearer in the trip notes. 3. Participants need to bring a rucksack large enough to carry clothing and other belongings (incl severe bad weather gear) for two successive overnight stays plus enough food for three lunches and 2 litres of water.
