- Jessie· July 28th, 2019This is a long post, but I have SO MANY AMAZING things to say about Kiimanjaro Trekking Mate! ( I don’t usually write reviews, but this company definitely deserves one!) If you are looking into doing Kilimanjaro, look no further than Kilimanjaro Trekking Mate! Words cannot describe how AMAZING Nick and his crew are! I have been traveling for over a year, and this by far is my favorite tour operator. I did a lot of research and I am so glad that at the end I chose KTM! Nick is extremely responsive via WhatsApp. I had a million questions and he always answered ALL of them very promptly. I had to get picked up from Arusha ( 2 hr drive) instead of the airport and Nick was able to organize me a driver who was there on time. As soon as I arrived in Moshi, at a very nice hotel that Nick booked for me, Nick met up with me. Since I have been traveling I did not have all the needed equipment. Nick drove me around Moshi with a smile on his face for me to find the things I needed. I needed a sports bra ( lost mine :( ) and Nick drove me to five different stores until we found one! The following day, I met the other hiker, my guides ( Goodluck and Pius) and my waiter on the mountain ( Rayson). Nick and the guides did a briefing and went over the itinerary in full detail. Then they checked both me and the other guys equipment to make sure we were set for the mountain. Nick brought me equipment from his store that I was able to rent for a good deal! He knew EXACTLY what I needed. His summit pants, summit jacket and gloves kept me nice and warm on summit day where most people were freezing! I was so thankful that NIck let me rent those items and his sleeping bag! Nick then took the other hiker and I to a local restaurant for lunch and then took me around to get more last minute gear ( I guess I was very ill prepared...haha). The next day, I met all the porters, chef, waiter guides and they drove us from the hotel to the starting gate. Everything was at ease. It was very well organized. About the guides: Goodluck and Pius were both AMAZING! I couldn’t have made it to the summit without them! They were very professional and did health checks every morning and \ evening to make sure we were okay by testing our oxygen level. Every night, they would tell us what to expect the following day. While hiking, they would point out different plants/flowers and explain their significance. We would ask them about the mountain, their lives, history of Tanzania, etc and they were able to answer all of our questions! They kept the hiking entertaining by throwing out jokes but always keeping their professionalism to make sure we were going “pole pole” ( slowly slowly). About the food: I felt like I was staying at a 5 star resort. I was treated the best that I have ever been treated ( I am not a person who stays at nice hotels ). This was luxurious. Abraham’s cooking was amazing and I enjoyed his soups every day :) When we had a request, for the most part, Abraham was able to grant it the next day! About the service: I LOVE Rayson, the waiter. Every morning, he would wake us up with ginger tea ( best wake up call ever!). He would always have a huge smile on his face and help us in any way possible. Because of him, I made it to the summit! He always told me I was “strong like SImba” and him being so inspirational helped me out! One day, I asked for Milo ( hot chocolate). He said they didn’t have any. The next day, milo miraculously appeared! You will never go hungry on the mountain! I brought a lot of snacks because I did Everest Base Camp earlier this year. Some meals were not enough and I was still hungry. However, on Kili, there was always extra food and they even gave you snacks! As soon as you arrive at camp, you would get warm water to wash up and then popcorn or some other snack and tea! Wow! What service! On long hiking days, they would even give you snacks to put in your backpack to eat along the way. I ended up not eating most of my snacks that I bought so I gave them to my guides and porters , which was much appreciated by them. Summit day: After I reached the summit, on the way down, my porters met me with mango juice which was exactly what I needed! I was suffering from altitude sickness so I wasn’t eating but juice was such a nice surprise! Summit day was HARD. I am not going to lie. However, Goodluck pushed me and helped me reach my goal. There was also a surprise when I reached camp, but I do not want to give it away on this post. I had a 5am flight out of Kilimanjaro Airport. Once again, with a smile on his face, Nick picked me up at 2 am to drive me to the airpor. I felt really bad and the entire time he said “ no problem. I love to do this. “ They were so accommodating with all my requests. I miss my Kili family already. I want to go back. It was the best way for me to end my year of travels. It was better service than I could ever imagine! Thank you from the bottom of my heart Nick, Goodluck, Pius, Rayson, and all the others on the mountain! You guys truly are the best!!! About me if you are wondering: I am a 31 year old female from the US. I was skeptical to hike as a solo female since I had a negative experience with Everest Base Camp. However, I felt 100% safe the entire time with this crew and there was never a time that I felt uncomfortable. If you are a solo female and want to hike Kilimanjaro, I can say that you will feel very at home and comfortable with KTM!Show moreKilimanjaro Trekking Mate commented on this reviewHi Jessie, We thank you for choosing us and did your Kilimanjaro Climb with us.
