- DCDouglas· June 4th, 2024Returning to Victoria Falls and Hwange--and getting to see Matobo and Great Zimbabwe for the first time--was a dream come true. My family had visited Victoria Falls and Hwange exactly sixty years ago (when I was three) and I had been mesmerized by the grandeur of the falls and by the majesty of African elephants. Seeing these places again (and getting to see Matobo and Great Zimbabwe for the first time) was "beautiful beyond the singing"--to borrow a phrase from Alan Paton. The guides were--without exception--wonderful! The sites were magnificent! The Zimbabweans we encountered were uniformly kind, warm, and welcoming! But Americans and Europeans on this tour should understand that they are visiting a developing nation. Some--not all--of the roads are in poor shape, making for slow progress at times. Most of the lodges, hotels, and restaurants were excellent, but the Great Zimbabwe Hotel in Masvingo has seen better days. For my wife and I, it was no problem. We were on a grand adventure and loved every moment, and the Great Zimbabwe Hotel was just part of a splendid adventure. (Be sure to ask for an explanation of the totem in front of the restaurant. It is a remarkable piece of art.) As we prepared to leave, we both looked at each other and said, "I'd love to come back--very soon!"Show more
