Jessica· August 6th, 2024I recently returned from a volunteer trip to Thailand, and I can honestly say it was one of the most transformative and enriching experiences of my life. From cultural immersion to learning how to scuba dive, this trip offered a perfect blend of adventure, learning, and community service. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the local community, and our hosts ensured we were fully immersed in Thai culture. We participated in traditional cooking classes, attended local night markets, and even learned a few basic phrases in Thai. This cultural immersion was not only educational but also allowed us to connect deeply with the locals, gaining a genuine appreciation for their way of life. One of the highlights of the trip was learning how to scuba dive in the stunning waters of Thailand. Our instructors were professional, patient, and passionate about diving, making sure everyone felt comfortable and safe. Exploring the vibrant underwater world was an unforgettable experience, and I left with a newfound love for scuba diving. One of the most rewarding aspects of this trip was the connections made with fellow volunteers and locals. We bonded over shared experiences and created memories that will last a lifetime. The sense of community and camaraderie was truly special, and I left with friendships that I know will continue beyond the trip. During my short, 10-day trip to Krabi, Thailand I was able to gather so much information and insight about the world around me while also learning how to leave a positive, lasting impact through responsible travel. The people that I met, including all of the wonderful guides, SCUBA instructors, locals, and my fellow volunteers all played the most important part in having made my experience with GIVE as life-changing as it was and I am so grateful to each and every one of them! The things that I experienced and saw during my SCUBA trip in Thailand, whether that be the beauty of the people in the community and how they love each other and their environment OR the not-so-beautiful trash floating in the ocean, piled up on the beaches, and buried in the sand nearly everywhere, completely altered my view of the world and my relationship with it. Outside of the certification, the knowledge I gained about coral, sharks, and mangroves was great and I loved that they had experts on each subject tell us about them. Additionally, we were able to connect with students from a school, visit and do activities in Kho Klang, and do a cooking class which allowed us to be culturally immersed and learn some more Thai. The scuba part itself was such a great experience because of our instructors at Fast Manta and the crew on the boat with us each day. I was able to see a cuttlefish, lionfish, sea turtle, and more, all while feeling comfortable and confident in the scuba diving skills I was taught! Thank you especially to Seth, Hannah, and P'Nice for being amazing guides each and every day! I'm looking forward to signing up for another GIVE trip for next summer!!Show more
