We chose to do a 9 day self guided cycle tour in Transylvania. The introduction at railway station with the Romania Active guide was excellent, and we were impressed with the map and the detailed daily self guided route. On arrival at our first guesthouse we found the bikes and paniers and small tool kit to be very suitable for the 9 day trip. We really enjoyed a great range of accommodation, and the hosts were friendly, helpful and generous. Being English speakers was no problem, most hosts had some or good English and if not, we got by with fun sign language and guesswork! The route was great and took us off the main roads and through the small Transylvanian villages, and we had plenty of time each day to stop and visit places of interest on the way. We found that the kms covered each day were manageable, and our level of fitness was fine for this route which included some climbs everyday. We also found that the surfaces of the route which included a lot of off tarmac cycling were fine, except for one day after heavy rain overnight when we encountered a lot of mud and uncyclable track. All the food was excellent and traditional and hosts were very generous with food and in some cases an occasional wine or schnapps, it was possible to buy a cold beer everywhere, much appreciated after a hot day on the route. We were happy that this was all included in our package and were not disappointed. Everything with transport and transporting our luggage worked like clockwork. Overall we were glad we chose the self guided route as it gave us some flexibility on the way and to go at our own pace. The self guided book was so easy to follow and we felt confident of our route. We had a fantastic time
