Our top itinerary for 7 days in the Netherlands

Day 1 - Amsterdam - Spend your day strolling through its pretty streets and tree-lined canals, stopping for a coffee and speculaas along the way. Go on a sightseeing tour of the Rijksmuseum, featuring the works of great Dutch masters, including Rembrandt's 'The Night Watch'.

Day 2 - Aalsmeer or Keukenhof - Head to Aalsmeer to visit the vibrant flower auction and see the vividly hued blooms. Alternatively, during the flowering season (end of March until mid-May), visit the tulip fields of Keukenhof - the mesmerising sight of several million flowering bulbs planted across 32 hectares.

Day 3 - The Hague and Delft - Travel through The Hague to the historic town of Delft and visit the Royal Delft Pottery workshop to gain insights into the manufacturing of this delicate hand-painted blue and white porcelain.

Day 4 - Rotterdam - Continue the journey on to Rotterdam, a city rebuilt from the ground up after being destroyed during World War II. Go on a walking tour which will reveal an innovative city with architectural treasures worth capturing on camera and a vibrant multicultural scene.

Day 5 - Arnhem and Oosterbeek - Travel north to Arnhem to see John Frost Bridge, named to pay tribute to the commander of the British forces that held the bridge for four days with a mere 750 soldiers, during the World War II Battle of Arnhem. In the afternoon, visit the Hoge Veluwe Park and then the Kröller-Müller Museum, featuring the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world.

Day 6 - Groningen and Volendam - Explore the university city of Groningen during a guided bicycle tour of its medieval center. Then enjoy a stunning drive through the mesmerising Frisian Lake District on to Volendam, a former fishing port on the edge of IJsselmeer.

7 day Netherlands cycling itinerary

Day 1 - Amsterdam - Go for a walk and marvel at the 17th-century townhouses in the World Heritage-listed canal district. The Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Vondelpark or a canal cruise are just some of the things you can do and see in Amsterdam.

Day 2 - Cycle to Haarlem - Cycle through Kennemerland where a great variety of lovely countryside awaits. In the afternoon you will arrive in Haarlem, a vibrant medieval city known for its textiles, beer brewing and as a major centre for the Tulip trade. In the evening, take a walk through the small and historical centre complete with the Grote Markt, St. Bavo church and the Teylers and Frans Hals museums.

Day 3 - Cycle to Leiden - Leiden is the oldest university town in the Netherlands. It has a very busy cultural events calendar and a friendly city centre with canals, monuments, windmills and museums to explore. The historical botanical gardens also deserve a special mention.

Day 4 - En route to Delft - As you cycle you'll see orderly rectangles in this man-made polder landscape (mostly peatland reclamations). Let shining lakes and green pastures, old windmills and farmhouses pass you by whilst pedalling on to the famous city of Delft. The melancholy charm of historical Delft is breathtaking.

Day 5 - Continue to Gouda - Cycle through the Green Heart, a stronghold against urban sprawl in Randstad conurbation. As you wander around the city of Gouda at the end of the day, don’t miss the Gothic town hall, the Weighing House, the romantic inner-city canals and the stained glass windows in St. John’s Church.

Day 6 - Return to Amsterdam - Go through the rural Green Heart once again and pass by small villages, lakes and meadows. Cycle back to Amsterdam following the beautiful Amstel river.
