My wife and I and two friends recently returned from a private Kili climb with the Great Lake Expedition Company. I can unreservedly say, having observed the other companies on the mountain, that the Great Lake Expedition team supporting us was second to none in professionalism, experience, friendliness and overall quality. We did the 7 day Rongai route (2 nights at Mawenzi Tarn for acclimatisation) which was incredibly beautiful. I understand from talking to the guides that this route is easier on the first days but harder on the summit day to Gillman's Point compared to one of the routes on the other side of the mountain such as the Machame route that summit via Stella point. We all experienced effects of the altitude (some short term memory issues from 4000m and nausea on the summit climb) but took Diamox so no actual altitude sickness. One of our friends is a severe asthmatic but with doctor approval, some extra drugs and the professional support of our chief guide Saidy and assistant guide Tom, she made it to the top successfully. Saidy made sure the walking pace was appropriate and frequent rest stops were provided to ensure that she didn't lose her breath and could summit safely without the need for oxygen. Yes it hurt and she had to work so much harder than the rest of us but she always felt safe and confident in Saidy's judgment. The small differentials that make Great Lake Expedition stand out were the top treatment of their porters (all wearing appropriate footwear/clothing and not overloaded), the focus on hygiene and the little things (cup of tea in bed every morning and tea at the top of gillman's, wonderful conversations with the guides etc...). We won't forget our cook who stayed up until we left at midnight for the summit climb then walked the first part singing to us to send us on our way.

In the heart of Tanzania, beneath the towering peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, I embarked on a soul-stirring adventure that would push my limits, test my resolve, and leave an indelible mark on my spirit. Joined by fellow adventurers from around the world—Rebecca from Sydney, David from Toronto, and myself, Emily from Chicago—we set out on the Machame Route, a six-day odyssey through some of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth. From the very first moment, Great Lake Expedition's commitment to excellence was evident. Our guides, Joseph and Benjamin, welcomed us with open arms, their passion for the mountain infectious and their knowledge invaluable. With their guidance, we embarked on our ascent, each step a testament to our determination and a celebration of the human spirit. The Machame Route unfolded before us like a tapestry of wonder, revealing hidden valleys, ancient forests, and sweeping panoramas that took our breath away. We traversed rugged terrain and crossed alpine deserts, our spirits buoyed by the majesty of our surroundings and the camaraderie of our companions. Nights on the mountain were a symphony of stars and silence, punctuated by the crackle of campfires and the soft murmur of conversation. As we huddled together beneath the vast African sky, sharing stories and laughter, I felt a profound sense of connection—to my fellow travelers, to the mountain, and to the pulse of life that echoed all around us. But it was on summit night that the true measure of our determination was put to the test. With headlamps aglow and the stars as our witness, we began the final ascent to Uhuru Peak—a grueling trek that would push us to our limits and demand every ounce of strength we possessed. Yet, with Joseph and Benjamin by our side, we pressed on, fueled by a shared dream and a relentless desire to reach the summit. And then, as the first light of dawn painted the horizon in hues of gold and crimson, we stood atop the roof of Africa—a moment of triumph that defied description. Tears of joy streamed down our faces as we embraced, our hearts overflowing with gratitude and wonder. In that fleeting instant, time stood still, and we knew that we had achieved something truly extraordinary. As we descended from the summit, our hearts heavy with the weight of our accomplishment, I couldn't help but reflect on the journey that had brought us here. To Great Lake Expedition, I owe an immense debt of gratitude for their unwavering support, their unparalleled expertise, and their tireless dedication to ensuring the safety and success of our expedition. Mount Kilimanjaro is more than just a mountain—it is a symbol of hope, of perseverance, and of the human spirit's capacity for greatness. And as I bid farewell to its snow-capped summit, I carry with me not only memories of an epic adventure but a newfound sense of strength, resilience, and possibility. With heartfelt thanks, Emily Johnson
