I am just back from Kilimanjaro after having had the most wonderful adventure. I and a group of friends, signed up with Great Lake Expedition , and I cannot recommend this company highly enough. From the minute we arrived in the Kilimanjaro Airport, we knew we were in safe hands. The entire group of guides (including Muntari, Robert and Jackson,), porters, cooks etc. who accompanied us from beginning to end could not have been more friendly, kind, helpful and supportive. Our safety and wellbeing were always top of the agenda, we were briefed thoroughly before each new leg of our adventure and even when the going got tough (particularly on summit night), the guides gentle encouragement and reassurances are what made the difference in us making it to the summit of the mountain. Thank you Great Lake Expedition , for helping us fulfil our dream!.

I spent six days hiking the Machame trail. And it was the BEST decision I could have made! Hiking Kilimanjaro was one of my lifelong dreams, and it was everything I imagined it would be and more! It was even better than I could have imagined! The way to Uhuru Peak was challenging, but our incredible guides, John and Dismas , and also our super porter and cook were there to support and encourage us every step of the way.

In the heart of Tanzania, beneath the towering peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, I embarked on a soul-stirring adventure that would push my limits, test my resolve, and leave an indelible mark on my spirit. Joined by fellow adventurers from around the world—Rebecca from Sydney, David from Toronto, and myself, Emily from Chicago—we set out on the Machame Route, a six-day odyssey through some of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth. From the very first moment, Great Lake Expedition's commitment to excellence was evident. Our guides, Joseph and Benjamin, welcomed us with open arms, their passion for the mountain infectious and their knowledge invaluable. With their guidance, we embarked on our ascent, each step a testament to our determination and a celebration of the human spirit. The Machame Route unfolded before us like a tapestry of wonder, revealing hidden valleys, ancient forests, and sweeping panoramas that took our breath away. We traversed rugged terrain and crossed alpine deserts, our spirits buoyed by the majesty of our surroundings and the camaraderie of our companions. Nights on the mountain were a symphony of stars and silence, punctuated by the crackle of campfires and the soft murmur of conversation. As we huddled together beneath the vast African sky, sharing stories and laughter, I felt a profound sense of connection—to my fellow travelers, to the mountain, and to the pulse of life that echoed all around us. But it was on summit night that the true measure of our determination was put to the test. With headlamps aglow and the stars as our witness, we began the final ascent to Uhuru Peak—a grueling trek that would push us to our limits and demand every ounce of strength we possessed. Yet, with Joseph and Benjamin by our side, we pressed on, fueled by a shared dream and a relentless desire to reach the summit. And then, as the first light of dawn painted the horizon in hues of gold and crimson, we stood atop the roof of Africa—a moment of triumph that defied description. Tears of joy streamed down our faces as we embraced, our hearts overflowing with gratitude and wonder. In that fleeting instant, time stood still, and we knew that we had achieved something truly extraordinary. As we descended from the summit, our hearts heavy with the weight of our accomplishment, I couldn't help but reflect on the journey that had brought us here. To Great Lake Expedition, I owe an immense debt of gratitude for their unwavering support, their unparalleled expertise, and their tireless dedication to ensuring the safety and success of our expedition. Mount Kilimanjaro is more than just a mountain—it is a symbol of hope, of perseverance, and of the human spirit's capacity for greatness. And as I bid farewell to its snow-capped summit, I carry with me not only memories of an epic adventure but a newfound sense of strength, resilience, and possibility. With heartfelt thanks, Emily Johnson

Great team and very helpful. Always on standby to clarify any questions and make the trip as smooth as possible. Great support ahead of the trip and the organization from landing to departure couldn’t have been better. On the mountain the team is friendly, professional and always there to help and encourage. Could have not asked for a better experience. And stop packing too many snacks - they will feed you so well, don’t expect to loose weight :)

My brothers and I did Kilimanjaro followed by safari with Great Lake Expedition. This company was top class in all aspects of the trip, starting with clear communication, punctual transfers and excellent service. We started with Kilimanjaro 7 days via Machame with guides Jackson and John, 10 porters and one cook. Jackson and John are knowledgeable, kind, patient and highly experienced with the mountain. Their physical and mental support gave us the edge that we needed to summit safely. Safari to Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro with driver/guide Honest was absolutely fabulous. Filled with exceptional wildlife encounters and overnight in their luxury lodges and camps. Great Lake Expedition deserves all the stars

Highly Recommended! I would book with Great Lake Expedition again. We had a wonderful and memorable experience. Our guides Methew and Allen “pole, pole” our way up to Uhuru summit via the Machame Route. Accompanied by 25 porters and a cook, a total of 35 staff supported the twelve of us on the seven day trek. The entire crew made sure we were safe, healthy, and well fed all the way up and down the mountain. I have the utmost appreciation for the crew and outfit. Everything was clean and timely. We had a blood oxygen and health check every night to make sure we were healthy. They served three square meals a day with soup and main course. The toilet porter cleaned the ports potty a couple of times a day. The tents used were fabulous with a large vestibule to hold the gear and a spacious sleeping area for two. The entire crew did their duties enthusiastically and with cheer. The entire crew are employees of Great Lake Expedition. They do not just do the front end sale and outsource the operations. In having the staff in-house, they can ensure the quality. On summit night (day), the guides brought Seven porters to accompany us, one staff each per client. They were ready to help us anyway they could, such as carrying your pack or even nudging you up the mountain. Fortunately we were able to summit without assistance and was rewarded with the most memorable experience. This trek was two years in the making. We were originally scheduled to go in July 2021…but Covid happened. Damsoni the owner patiently worked with us our rescheduling. He honored our original pricing and was flexible on our trip timing. He was very responsive and readily available via Whats App. I especially appreciated that the outfit did not nickel and dime us with additional charges like overweight duffles or personal toilets etc. Raphael the operations manager made sure everything was in order from the airport pickup to the per departure Covid test. We chose the 7 da machame route because it gave us one of the best chances of summiting. I loved that the trail is less travelled. On the way up, we only saw one other group on the trail. We had every campsite and trails to ourselves. We had acclimation hikes every afternoon after reaching the campsites to hike high, sleep low. Also the Machame trail is drier than the others. We did not encounter rain until our descent. Pretty much we had the entire trail to ourselves untill Mweka camp where a few routes merge. The last two days descending the mountain were shared on the Lemosho and Umbwe routes. We saw at least four large groups heading up each day on the busy Lemosho. Take Diamox. It really helps with altitude sickness. Luckily we did not experience any. We had 0F sleeping bags to stay warm. For summit day, we wore 4-7 layers on top, 3 layers on bottom, and double socks and gloves. You will need it for the -20C temps at the summit. A good headlight is a must. We carried everything in a North Face Base Camp Duffel sized large. I would definitely recommend Great Lake Expedition. Would book with them again.
