Airports near Kruger National Park

There are three airports which serve Kruger National Park: Phalaborwa, Hoedspruit Eastgate, and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. There are also daily flights from other major airports in South Africa, such as Johannesburg or Cape Town. Generally, travellers are advised to fly to a major airport such as Johannesburg and then take a shorter flight to one of the airports which serve Kruger National Park.

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport is the gateway to Kruger National Park. From this airport, it's a very brief drive lasting well under an hour to Kruger National Park. If travelling with a tour company, the operator will often organise transportation. This is a convenient option for travellers looking to dive straight into their safari experience.

Hoedspruit Airport

Hoedspruit Airport is a regional airport located very nearby Kruger National Park. Another great option for travellers who want to begin their safari right away, Hoedspruit Airport is less than an hour's drive to the park. If travelling with a safari group, transportation will generally be organised.

Skukuza Airport

Skukuza Airport is a private airport located within Kruger National Park. A prime option for travellers who don't want the hassle of organising separate transport from outside airports, Skukuza Airport offers daily flights from both Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Nelspruit Airport

Nelspruit Airport is the older airport in the region, and much of the activity here has since been taken over by Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. However, there are still some shorter flights which arrive and depart from Nelspruit Airport, and this is a great option for travellers looking to explore the area before their safari. This airport is located approximately one hour from the Southern Region of Kruger National Park.

Flights from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park

From Johannesburg, South African Airlines provide a 45-minute flight to Kruger Mbombela International Airport. The flights are approximately $200-$300 USD depending on the time of year, and depart several times per day.

There is also the option to drive to Kruger National Park from Johannesburg. This drive will take four to five hours to complete, and can generally be completed without incident.

Flights from Cape Town to Kruger National Park

The best airport to fly into from Cape Town is Skukuza Airport, located directly within Kruger National Park. There are daily flights available from South African Airlines, which last about two and a half hours and cost up to $750 USD, depending on the season. Driving to Kruger National Park from Cape Town takes about 18 hours, and is not recommended.
