- KYKatherine· October 15th, 2019The Kenyan portion and our guide, Alex from Pollman's was excellent. The Tanzanian portion was poor due to our guide, Bakari. Here is a part of my email sent to Rangers. 1. Unprofessional behavior: - As we were driving to Lake Manyara, he proceeds to say that the Maasai are lazy people, that they only take security guard positions at the lodges so they can sleep most of the time. We were surprised by this racist comment. We did dispute it by saying "come on", but he insisted they are lazy. Bakari should be speaking about people positively showcasing Tanzania but he chose to bring people down. Unprofessional. 2. Poor customer service: - Bakari made sure to tell our truck the minimum tip is $10/day/person. I asked the others in the other trucks and their drivers did not say anything re: the tip. We did tip him for the keeping us alive but it was not "his minimum." - For our picnic lunches, he parked far away from the picnic tables, pointed to the tables, handed me all the lunches to carry it to our table. This is poor customer service on 2 accounts. Firstly, we had an elderly woman in our truck who he knew had difficulty with walking as she had a cane and required assistance to get into the truck. With uneven surfaces, he should be parking close to the table to make it easier for her. Secondly, all the drivers escorted their people to the table, put down a table cloth (on some occasions, like Maurice) and handed everyone their lunches. Bakari would just point to the tables and hand me all 4 lunches to carry over. - The day before we left the Serengeti, we discussed what time to meet the next day as we were headed off the Ngorongoro Crater. Bakari said that we were headed to the gate for our picnic lunch which was an hour and a half away. I said that after breakfast, we would not be hungry 90 minutes later. He then went to say that we can start later so that we would be hungry for lunch. So we agreed to a 10:00 am start. We would have breakfast, spend time at the hotel and then meet him at 10:00 am. At dinner that evening, we spoke to the others form our tour and they said that they were meeting their drivers early (7:00 and 8:30 am) because they are going on a game drive first. Bakari never mentioned a game drive, he said it was a transport day and he would take us to the gate for lunch 90 minutes after leaving the lodge. We missed out on Serengeti game drive as we too would have left early for a game drive but he didn't give us that option. - As we were leaving Serengeti, my mother asked to stop at the gate to take pictures. He even said "you want to take a photo" and my mother said yes. He drove straight through and did not stop. There were other trucks stopped but he didn't ans would not say why he didn't. VERY POOR customer service. 3. Driving skills could be improved: - Bakari kept us safe but we don't understand why he always let other trucks pass us. This is a problem because of the dust factor. I even said to him why can't we drive at the same pace as others and asked if our truck or tires were different and his response was that we are not in a rush. So we ate more dust than necessary because other trucks kept passing us. 4. Poor guide driver: - Bakari needs more training on spotting animals and knowing where the animals are. We saw the basics but the other tour members in Mahanga and Maurice's trucks saw much much more. We did NOT see a lion hunt a water buffalo (Serengeti), lion cubs (Serengeti) and leopards mating (Serengeti), hundreds of elephants near by (Tarangire) and vultures eating a zebra (Tarangire). Because we did not see much in Tarangire, we asked him about it and he said that Tarangire is a "beginner" safari park because it does not have many animals and the elephants have left. In actuality, he does not know where to go to find animals. We asked for an early start the last day to get another game drive in before heading to Arusha. I mentioned to Bakari what the other truck saw and his response that Maurice didn't answer the radio. Because of Bakari's lack of guide driving skills, we didn't see that many animals or special moments (like the other trucks) in Tanzania.Show moreTrip date: September 2019
