Back in 1989, two guys from Melbourne, Australia by the names of Darrell and Manch set off on an adventure to the other side of the world. They travelled to Africa and without air conditioning on their modified truck, they filled it with supplies, some beer, a bunch of aviator sunglasses, and...

- Daniel· November 5th, 2023Our guide Patrick was excellent. A busy trip with some long drives at times. Physically not arduous if prepared as long as you aren't suffering any of the usual ailments you can expect to get at the time of the treks. Great variety of scenery and flora and fauna to be seen with lots of expert info available. Very much a different world. Had some incredible experiences and the group was great.Show moreIntrepid Travel commented on this reviewHi Daniel! - Jenny· November 5th, 2019An adventure like no other. A unique country, animals and people. It ticked all my animal encounter boxes except the Aye Aye Lemur which I didn't really expect. Almost a land Galapagos experience, the animals are all so magnificent, the guides and scouts very organised so that you get your viewing experience. The only negative thing is the country is not set up very well for tourism. Which in one way is great, because crowds are not good when viewing wildlife, but it could be organised better by limiting numbers of tourists into certain places. A time allotment should be given to share the load and a maximum number of tourists. But hey that is just an idea for improvement. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I am so glad I got to tick it off my bucket list. Don't miss the Grand Tsingy. Don't miss Peyrieras Exotic Park for the chameleonsShow moreIntrepid Travel commented on this reviewHi Jenny, thank you for the feedback and for the really great ideas. - Jenny· October 13th, 2019We saw all the animal species I hoped to see and more. Fascinating and adventurous trip. Long days of travel that can't be avoided unless the government upgrades national route roads. Barnabus is a very attentive, knowledgeable guide who tries hard to make everything perfectShow moreTrip date: September 2019
- ADinah B· September 18th, 2019Your staff! I may go into a little detail here but it is important you are aware of some of the difficulties encountered and the fantastic manner they were dealt with by your staff, had it not been for them, the ratings may well be a lot lower! The driver Alex..an amazing person who considered our safety paramount. His care of the bus was amazing! Every morning I woke up and in the car park was Alex, washing the bus and polishing (yes, POLISHING!) the windows to ensure we had a great view every day. The inside was spotless every time we entered it and the care of our luggage was first class. I left a bag of snacks one day near my luggage that I planned to pick up after breakfast, when I went to get it, it had gone...and there it was, on my seat on the bus...he had even picked that up for me. He didn't talk much but always had a smile and a cheerful ""good morning"". Always felt safe with his driving and he clearly went out of his way to avoid bumps and holes in the road to ensure the smoothest ride possible, and as you may know that can take a lot of effort in Madagascar! Our main guide Mamy Mampiandra, was even more amazing! Besides his depth of knowledge, (Sadly I can only remember a fraction of what he said..) his professional, caring manner is a credit to Intrepid to find a guide of his standard. Mamy's work ethic is to a standard that is rarely seen. I will state just a few examples...There were several issues associated with accommodation. The accommodation (some) near Andasibe National park (the 21 April, I think) was not ready when we arrived. The staff at this accommodation didn't appear to concerned about this. We made ourselves happy having a drink then having a swim only to find out when our rooms were ready, there was little or no water (never hot water in our cabins at any time). Mamy spent a lot of time attempting to rectify this for us, calmly translating for us, but it appeared the staff wanted to argue the point that it was an ongoing problem at the facility. We managed, there was a pool and a shower near there, so all good. There were some other issues at other accommodation, but if you wish further information I would be happy to provide it. Just a note about Anako ecolodge...I can speak a little French and overheard some conversations that disturbed me. May I say it was the groups choice to eat elsewhere rather than at the lodge, as is our right to do so as other than breakfast, no meals were included. (The breakfast here was one of the worst on the trip, I understand they may not always have to freshest of ingredients, but it was substandard). Back to our guide Mamy… Throughout the trip, he spent so much time ensuring everything ran smoothly. We had some demanding people with us, and I observed Mamy attempting to rectify issues, including one very demanding lady wanting to change/book flights (wouldn't have thought this was his jobs and she let us know multiple times a day she needed them changed..) always making calls to fix any problems people had. Organising alternate local guides for one lady who seemed to want to do her own thing, I spent several nights sharing accommodation with her and was astounded at the demands she made on Mamy to organize things for her....and every day he had arranged it for her to make her happy. Amazing! One of the people I was traveling with left his very expensive sunglasses behind at Ranomafana. I said to him bad luck and he should be more careful. We had arrived at Fianarantsoa and he insisted the sunglasses be retrieved...Mamy went and did it! Not a problem! It would have taken hours for the round trip but Scott had his sunglasses that night...I told him he just should have claimed them on insurance. But I am babbling on! How he deals with such temperamental, demanding people with such a gracious demeanor is a rare find. Lastly may I say on any of the walks/hikes he was always there for some of us that were a bit slower, giving a helping hand when needed...which I needed on more than one occasion...ensuring our safety was his highest priority. Although as a paramedic, I did give him a hand treating one lady that fell and injured her knee and lower leg, with her permission. This was not a reflection on his ability, but just it was what I do for my job, so made sense that I assisted. You could do with a few ampoules of chlorhexidine in your first aid kits instead of iodine...just a side note! Mamy was willing to answer ANY question asked of him and was also very protective of us wherever we were visiting or staying providing information or reminding us to cover our knees, shoulders etc. In short, he was GOLD! The local guides were also very informed and helpful and always did their best to highlight local fauna, flora and customs. If you would like any further details, I would be happy to provide them. 41425227.Show moreTrip date: April 2019
