Having both guided tours and lots of free time made for a nicely balanced tour where our guide, Toshimi, a very knowledgeable local, would show us parts of Japan and tell us of their significance historically and socially, and also tell us how and where to appreciate Japan during our free time. Our guide loves Japan's history and it was very interesting talking to him about Japan. I thoroughly enjoyed the leader, the group of people I went with, and the places we visited. Nikko was an unexpected delight! By the end of the tour, I felt like I had a good introduction to Japanese culture, and had the confidence to travel on my own for a while longer. I would recommend this trip to anyone who wants an introduction to Japan with some freedom to do some activities on their own also. From big cities to forests and mountains. There is plenty of opportunity for exploring on your own as well as interesting and informational included destinations.
