Not only did he show us the major highlights of Northern Oman, but he also shared deep insights into the country’s rich culture and the daily lives of the Omani people. Some of the standout moments for us included visiting the majestic Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat, hiking and swimming through the stunning Wadi Shab. A special mention to Aziz for personally guiding us during both the hike and the swim—something we noticed not all guides do. Other highlights were driving across the breathtaking dunes of the Sharqiya Sands, followed by an exhilarating camel ride, exploring the historical Nizwa Fort and Castle, and soaking in the dramatic views and mountain walks in Jabal Akhdar. Our guide/driver Khalil was excellent in all respects, speaking and conversing in excellent English, sharing his extensive knowledge of Oman and its history, and readily able to answer all our many questions, regardless of topic. The standard of accommodation was first class, but varied from modern luxury hotels in Muscat, to most interesting heritage hotels and resorts/camps in the mountains and desert. Our 8 day tour had a well thought out and executed itinerary, with our luxury 4WD (a must in the desert, and in mountains). Khalil accommodated our tour interests and priorities. We found Oman to be our preferred Middle East experience, with not just extensive modern high standard infrastructure, but also a lot of heritage history and villages, and a very varied geography, of rugged mountain ranges, wadis and coast line. Special mention to the desert overnight stay, the location was great and so was the food! I was also very happy with the fact that most meals were included. I would have appreciated to have a detailed itinerary with me as there were some activities that were not mentioned in the plan originally shared and for which I did not have the level of fitness required (e.g. 3 hour walk in the mountains, as I have fear of heights I would have been grateful to discuss this in advance). Very easy to ask questions via WhatsApp and seamless communication with all drivers for airport transfers as well as introducing us to our tour guide. Great to have the flexibility of a private tour. Our guide, Basam, was keen to ensure that we enjoyed our trip, and saw the best of Oman. His sense of humour made the trip more enjoyable, and there was much laughter. All the hotels were comfortable, and the trip felt especially great value considering that most of our meals are included. In fact, I believe we only paid for a couple of lunches in Muscat. Highly recommend. I normally travel on small group tours, so this was a bit of an adventure.
