I was on a solo travel adventure for 8 month and this 56 day african drums tour was the absolute highlight of my time away. First things first... my guide Pete went above and beyond with everything that the group needed. he was a ball of knowledge and become a great friend to everyone. he was very professional but still able to be there when anyone needed help whether it be putting up the tent or emotional support. my driver Mugu was also great. i don't know how he was able to drive so long and always get us there safely. Even Natasja whom was emailing me for months before the trip had began was always super prompt and happy to help me with everything. The trip itself allowed me to experience so many parts of africa, all kinds of landscapes and enjoy many many activities. i am a huge adrenaline seeker and love adventure and this trip really had everything i wanted. we got to really immerse ourselves into the wild and had some incredible animal encounters. one night we even had lions walking through the camp which was unreal! yes some days are long driving days but i think when you have so many things on the other days its good to have a bit of a rest. you are very involved with setting up camp, cooking and cleaning. everything becomes easy after a few days and just a part of the truck life. don't expect good showers or wifi! i was very lucky that i had such a fantastic group of people on the tour. most people were solo travellers and came from aus, america, england, nz, belgium and holland. the age range was from 19-60ish with most people in there 20-30's. i made great friends through this trip and will never forget all the great times and things we experienced together. the only thing that they don't tell you before beginning the trip was that the group does not all start together. i was thankful to have started near the beginning but i did see that it was harder for people who joined the group at a later date as friendships had already formed and it was harder to establish your place in the group. so if i could redo it i would do the longer trip for 73 days. i could go on for days writing about this trip but overall i advise anyone who is reading this to take the leap and book the tour. It really is a game changer and the company is great!

Absolute Africa was an amazing company to go on a long trip with, they are well organised and were very helpful from before booking and right through to the end! Our tour guide Aly was exceptional, so full of information, flexible and kept us all well organised, enjoying ourselves and feeling safe at all times. I've done a lot of traveling and this was by far the best experience of my life and both Aly and absolute Africa have a great deal to do with that. I would recommend absolute Africa in a heart beat to anyone wanting to visit that side of the world!

My boyfriend and I are travelling round the world for 13 months, and this tour was a definite highlight. This was largely due to our fantastic guide Mufaro, and our driver JB. Both went well above and beyond their job descriptions to make sure we all had a fantastic time. Obviously every group is different, but our group was a more mature group (in mentality not necessarily age) unlike all the other gap year trucks we met along the way. We both had a fantastic time, and I genuinely could not recommend anything more, or thank JB & Mufaro for making this part of our trip so amazing.

What our customers ask about this tour

The content in our FAQ section is subject to change.
    • When is the best time to view the migration?

The prime time to visit the Serengeti in Tanzania is usually regarded as being from late November through to March when the big herds of wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle and zebra head on to the southern plains of the Serengeti.

To get the best viewing on the other hand in Kenya's Masai Mara July through to September are usually regarded as the best months.

    • How much will this tour really cost me?

The costs to consider when travelling overland are:

      Safari price & Local payment,
      Optional excursions,
      Personal spending money,
      Visas.

We are always very transparent about what a tour will cost and are happy to go through personal, tailored budgets to give you a very realistic idea of what you will spend on your tour - whether you are an adrenaline junkie, souvenir-shopaholic or travelling on a shoestring…

    • What is the local payment?

The local payment is a separate payment from the initial price you pay before you leave. If a local payment is required it will be shown with the trip price. This second payment is made in Africa at the start of your trip. It is payable in USD. The local payment provides us with the means for expenses that need to be paid in cash to local businesses en route to be arranged in the most cost effective manner possible, a saving we can then pass on to you. It also means we can operate in a way that directly supports local businesses and wildlife authorities as we travel. Local Payment will not be changed once you have booked your travel arrangements.
