The trip completely fulfilled our expectations (with a small restriction regarding Hiroshima)! The days were long and exhausting, but the respective starting points always motivated us to tackle the average daily distance of around 7km or 14 floors! The hotels were all good, as was the included or recommended food. The tour guides were good to top in a certain range, the group discipline in terms of keeping to the times was sometimes quite lax.
- by Tammo Asmus VoigtI thought the itinerary, sites, organiztion, transportation and accommodations were very good and exceeded my expectations. The only drawback was when we were left in Gion on our own to arrange for our transportation back to the hotel, despite our pleads to ask the guide (Rey) and bus driver to drop us off at the hotel. Rey was supposed to help us with catch a train back to the hotel but he never did. I was lucky to find a Japanese women who help me get on a bus (#7) to my hotel only 20 minutes away and only 230 yen. The company has to give the travelers transportation option advise (bus, train or taxi) if we are dropped off, instead of "take a taxi."

We were 3 friends booked this as part of a longer trip and this was one of the best highlights of our trip. Two thumbs up!
- by Frank SalamiGreat freedom and flexibility which is the perfect way to explore Hakone. The accommodation was very close to the sites, was comfortable, and the staff were really helpful and friendly. We basically got a pass from bamba that allowed us to explore all sites around Hakone. Between our friends, people we met while in Tokyo, the hotel reception and bamba recommendations we had plenty to do and visit. This is a self-guided trip, so if you want to be able to do what you want when you want then this is the product for you. We did not have the luxury of time to shop around and try to figure out what entrances to by and which sites to see. The pass included in this itinerary was exactly what we needed. I felt the trip was of great value, there are definitely better, much more expensive hotels, and like everywhere people trying to sell you experiences on the cheap.

A good tour. I understand that using public transport is part of the experience but on occasion I think it would have been more efficient to use a coach
- by Sheila McCarthyAs extensive correspondence with the tour company has stated we felt that the tour offered VERY poor value for money. The high cost was not reflected in the standard of accomodation, all entrance fees were excluded and there were very few meals included. The tour company's response was that they had high overheads reflecting back of house expenses eg training, quality control etc Also they failed to pick up at the incoming airport as promised, stating we were ''coming in early' despite the fact that flight arrangement were always the customers ' responsibility. The guide was quite good but we would never use this company again. Feel ripped offf.

Had an overall great time with the tour! The itinerary is pretty laid-back and was tailored for our group interests, and the people were all very fun to hang with! Would definitely take some time after the tour to explore outside of the Tokyo area, but this is a great launch pad if you want to learn the ropes of navigating the island without too much stress.
- by Vadim KudlayThis has been such an experience, I will never forget my time in NY. The tour guide, Lloyd, was the best, he showed us the best places to eat and took us to the most beautiful temples and historical spots, which he knew the history of so well. I feel like not only I visited and experienced Japan in a special way, I learned so much from Japan's culture and lifestyle in a way I never would have learned if I went on a different tour.

My husband and I went on the World Expiditions Back Roads of Japan Tour last year, and were extremely disappointed in the quality of guide provided. The guide had never done the tour, had never even been to half the places on the itinerary and was a complete loose cannon, on two occasions taking elicit drugs and drinking to the point of being unable to function. When the entire tour group sent complaints following the completion of the tour, World Expeditions were elusive and largely uncommunicative, and offered us all an insulting refund of about 12% of our tour cost. Needless to say, we will not be taking or recommending World Expeditions tours in the future.
- by Emily AveryThis was our first trip with World Expeditions and also our first trip to Japan. We were very surprised that upon our arrival our (non Japanese) guide announced that he had not done this trip before - or ever lead a group of this size (12)! Although we were a seasoned group of travelers, most had never been to Japan. General disappointment with our guide was evident but we decided to push on. Most places we stayed were great and we really loved the Japanese culture and people we experienced. It would have been an incredible trip if we had a local guide that knew the culture and history. Our guide not only had different trip notes to us, but he had to use google to find his way around and answer most of our questions. His interest in the local Yakuza (Mafia) was outstanding, as were his drug addiction which became apparent much later in the tour. If it were not for the experience of our group, disaster & mishap could have occurred on several occasions. Upon our return we complained to World Expeditions in detail, but it seemed of little concern to them. We were given a 12% refund and told that the guide had been sacked. We will definitely return to Japan, but unfortunately would not recommend World Expeditions to anyone. We will certainly never travel with them again!
